I know it's wars and spaceships and characters but there's supposed to be something meaningful in it, like Yoda is meaningful. But why are there wars? The galaxy seems to not need anything really. It has everything. Technology, access to any kind of planet for resources. What is the difference between good and evil? What is causing the wars? Maybe it's like Mace wants some girlfriends, that's why he's a jedi, Mace Windu? The phantom menace is in him maybe and he doesn't know it, but he tries to avoid it. So he has to be a jedi, so he has to have the sith as enemies. I just cannot see another reason for wars in this galaxy which has everything. It's really about Mace wanting girlfriends and thus causing conflict between humans in a galaxy that has everything.

Or the flipside is, Mace wants male compatriot friends, and the sith want girlfriends.... So why not just give the sith the girlfriends, and settle the war?

There are wars in STAR WARS for the same reasons that there are wars in this world, i would beleive. Like in the phantom menace-a trade boycott from the trade federation on naboo. umm, rebellion vs. an empire- it's all classic stuff that we've seen in our history, well without lightsabers and dogfights in space

It's the Matinee Serial antidote for the mediocre, socially-engineered "kewlness" of modern Hollywood. In other words, while countless other would-be franchises plummet trying to become "hip" and "change with the times", Star Wars has survived nearly three decades by staying true to itself.

Star Wars is simply the story of the Rise, Fall, and Redemption of Anakin Skywalker. Anything else is a sub-plot.

It's about good and evil and it's different forms. It's also about compassion.

Actually, on the ANH commentary, Lucas says it is ultimately about Leia's quest to destroy the Death Star.

    His words. Paraphrased.

I agree. To Georgie Boy it's all about $$$$$$$. Over the years the Star Wars movies have changed along with the Old Man's interpatations. But the one constant has always been about what can Star Wars do to get your money.

It's about hope and redemption, and the triumph of light over darkness - that's the reason George Lucas created the Saga - to bring this message to a jaded, cynical world.

I have no problem with George making a ton of money off of it... If I could make billions of dollars off my own movie series, I'd do it and so would everyone else who posts here

Not to mention the question isn't why Lucas is making the movies, it's what we think the movies are about. Lucas can make all the money he wants off these movies. I really don't care because I am a consumer, and I have this lovely thing called "choice" that allows me to decide whether or not I want to add to that cash resource. If I wind up enjoying said expenditure, more power to my special self.

I tend to agree with what somebody said above. Star Wars is about Anakin Skywalker, and more that Anakin is a manifestation of the traditional story of rise, fall, and redemption...with subplots in regards to how much or how little it effects everything around the individual under scrutiny.

    Oh... wow.
Well what do you mean exactly when you say
    "what is starwars about"? lol
    There are sooooooo many answers.
    Do you mean..
What is the entire StarWars movie saga written by George Lucas about?
    OR
What is the first starwars film ANH about?
    OR
What is the first trilogy about?
    OR
What are all 6 films the entire saga about?
    OR
WHAT is starwars the movies, and expanded universe of books about?

I mean, there are all different answers that could be given. But um, no I dont think its about Mace getting girls. LOL. Yeah it is about wars.. and it does reflect our own reality where as every continent and country in our little world has very different people... almost like walking on to another planet at times.. BUT what I know (from what I've read and learned and researched) is this:

LUCAS time and time again tells the story of how his story starwars came to be.
    HIS STORY
He had a room full of comic books as a boy (a seperate room from his) and he says they were stacked to the celing. Then when he got older he began to get interested in racing.
He grew up in the 50's era and loved Cars and cowboy western films.. he also loved the samurai films.
Read about his life in the one bio out there about him, I forgot the title but it is found in the kids section and it tells you ALOT. Borders rocks.
Anyway.. he got into an accident when racing and he says he should have not survived. He was hospitalized for a long time and stopped racing. His mother was in and out of the hospital too for reasons he has never said.. but he did say she was in and out his whole life. Either way his mother was apparently disabled. He almost became disabled from his accident as well. So that kind of thin makes you think, he says that when he stopped racing he began to pick up the camera. He had alot to say and he wanted to relfect life and make movies that were original ideas and new types of films. Watch the charlie rose interview for the best insight into Lucas and what his career has been about.

    MAKING STARWARS (the story)
He says STARWARS was one idea but a pile of ideas at first. He said he had a ton of ideas for a western type samurai influenced drama that would take place in space. Thats alot of ideas and he said it took a long time for him to get it all together. He did want a father, son story though. It took years for him to get all his ideas down, but even then he was unsure how to fit it all together. And time and again he has said that the whole saga (meaning all 6 of the films he has always planned on making for the saga) are about a man named ANAKIN SKYWALKER (which at first his name was StarKiller and not skywalker) And the story of his rise and fall and then redemption. He said he wanted to show that even the angelic can fall. He said "Anakin is like an angel at first ..." and then we watch him fall to the darkside of life. So go from there. I think it is always best to go directly to commentary, interviews, and things that show Lucas speaking for himself.

    GETTING THE MOVIE MADE
He also said that no one believed in his crazy "western in space" idea.. and that it was very hard for him to get any of it done (he needed backup and funds). But he had friends in the business (other famous directors) that he knew from college and they totally saved him, he calls the man who made the godfather (Copolla) his mentor and reason for starwars ever being made in Hollywood. He was told however that the beginning of the story would have to wait and that he should take it up in the middle where Anakins son LUKE is born and then eventually saves his father because audiences would be more receptive of that part. Lucas has said time and again when talking about the PREQUELS that he is making.. "finally I get to tell the part of the story Ive been waiting 25 years to tell."

Someone wrote: Actually, on the ANH commentary, Lucas says it is ultimately about Leia's quest to destroy the Death Star. His words. Paraphrased.

RE: Well thats the ANH (A NEW HOPE) commentary and yes that is definately what ANH

star wars is placed in the world through the will of the force to act as a mirror to the lives of all sentient beings. it exists to make us realize that there are things at work constantly, and sith behind the scenes getting thier fingers dirty... and my fingers
