There is an expensive "nuts and twigs" type food store where I live and I understand Oprah Nutsoid Winfrey shops there. My neighbor (who is a dirty hippie) says that they sell "organic" foods there. What does that mean, and why are liberals so obsessed with it? Is the food actually better? I don't see the difference between "organic" eggs and regular eggs, other than the fact that you can buy regular eggs for 89 cents a dozen. The "organic" ones cost $3 a dozen. What makes these eggs so great? I think it's stupid.

I only eat inorganic eggs, which are made of iron.

I think organic foods mean that the foods were grown with little to no chemicals like growth chemicals to make them grow faster. I think there is more to it than that but basiclly Organic foods are more healthy for you.

I never saw the difference in that whole "cageless" philosophy for eggs. It's not like the these people aren't still making a profit from those eggs.

^Yep. It can also mean that they're vegetarian. So like while I buy regular eggs at the grocery store, I'll go into organic places for veggie hot dogs and sausages and burgers, because it's where you can get them the easiest in Germany. Even though they're quite expensive...

Some foods, I buy regular, but for fruits and veggies I notice a big difference in flavor when I buy organic.

Organic foods are more healthy for you

Can you back that up with any evidence ? I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just interested to know what you are forming that opinion on.

Surely an apple which hasn't been attacked by bacteria, fungi, rodents or insects is going to be healthier than one which has.

Well I would assume that foods with less chemicals that America puts in the foods would be more healthy.

If I had to choose between eating a Tomato that was grown with little chemicals and eating a Tomato that is loaded with chemicals I would choose the 1st Tomato.

Besides, Cooks on the Food Channel always suggest eating Organic foods for better health.

So you really don't have much of a grounding, other than your personal opinion ?

That's fine, I'm not questioning it at all - I've always though fruit from your own garden was always better tasting.

However, I've dug this up :-

Certified organic produce is not essentially healthier than produce that has been grown under non-organic conditions -- the nutritional content of a particular vegetable doesn't change
[/blockquote]

    from [link=http://edition.cnn.com/HEALTH/indepth.food/organic/explainer.html#5]here[/link]

    [blockquote]
This is not to say that every single organic carrot will always have higher nutritional content than a conventional one - much depends on the soil and climate, the maturity of the crop, how and for how long it is stored, and how long the land has been farmed organically. In addition, there isn't enough scientific data available yet to prove the case for organic food conclusively.
[/blockquote]

Because "organic" is "natural" and all that's natural is good and cuddly and cute and nice and peaceful, because Mother Nature is a kind old lady.

I don't care about "organic" products so much. I don't know enough about the hormones and chemicals they use to know anything about how potentially dangerous they are to me as a consumer. I just wish they'd start selling good apples. I'd much rather eat an ugly tasty apple than a beautiful large shiny apple that's essentially flavorless.

mycotoxins (fungus derived toxins) .......... cause cancer, damage genes, and are harmful to the kidneys and the immune system.
[/blockquote]

Its not the nutrients that is the issue. It is the chemicals they add. I am not too educated on the matter and have only seen what is on TV, however, the fact remains is that Organic foods have less chemicals than non-organic foods.

I am not sure what the chemicals can do to the human body in the long term but I am sure they probably don't help the human body at all.

Anyways, it doesn't matter. I really don't eat organic foods that much so I could care less.

Not all chemicals are harmful. Why should I be any more worried about the chemicals that may have touched my food than the chemicals that I'm smearing all over my body every day in the shower, and the chemicals that go into the dyes in my clothes, and the chemicals used to synthesize my medications when I get sick, the chemicals that are in the air I breathe at all times? Both "natural" and "artificial" flavors are chemicals manufactured at big plants, the only difference being by some technical definition. In fact, "artificial" flavors are in many cases better for you than "natural" flavors, which generally have little to do with nature as most people think of it.

If the chemicals being sprayed on plants or fed to animals I'm going to eat are harmful, that's a problem, but I'm constantly being doused with chemicals. If "organic" food tastes better, and you can afford it, more power to you. But until someone shows me that "organic" food is actually healthier and less harmful to me than "regular" food, I can't worry about it too much.

Personally I'd rather eat fungus than pesticides.

Then you're being silly, because there are a good many fungi that are very poisonous to humans.

I was refering to the subject at hand. Organic food was said to have the potential to contain harmful fungus. I simply stated that I would rather consume organic foods and risk ingesting such fungus than consume non-organic foods and constantly expose myself to perticides (in fruit and vegetables) and growth hormone (in meat).

The various chemicals, fertilizers, and hormones are the major reason why our country has so much food. Therefore, that makes organic food a specialty food catergory for folk in the US. Since organic food is made the old fashioned way without chemicals, the food is more labor intensive to grow and yields are usually lower.

I've never really bought much organic food, because of the price, but I can say that homegrown vegatables and fruits are a whole lot better than the ones you buy in stores. My family garden at home isn't completly natural, but it isn't loaded with chemicals either.

That was actually my point. People get so concerned about the chemicals on their food, and then go out and spend obscene amounts of money on other chemicals to pour all over themselves.
