    (Not sure if Americans use the word Bogan).

    Hmmm... got thinking of this question while on my recent road trip, and I will attempt to describe the definitions and differences here. Please feel free to add your own thoughts!

    Bogan
    A bogan is a person who is totally, out of mainstream fashion sense. A hick. A hillbilly. Someone that has a mullet (a hairstyle... not sure again if Americans use this word).

    Geek
    A Geek is basically a fanboy. Star Trek fan, etc...

    Nerd
    A nerd is someone I envision whose total life is revolved around study and schoolwork, especially science, etc...

    God forbid, could there be combinations of all of the above! ;)

    With those explinations, I must then ask: What is a dork?

    according to dictionary.com

    dork

    n.

    Slang. A stupid, inept, or foolish person: ?the stupid antics of America's favorite teen-age cartoon dorks? (Joshua Mooney).

    Vulgar Slang. The penis.

    I'm a geek and damn proud of it.

    But I have NEVER heard the word "Bogan" before...must be an Aussie thing.

    Wait, wasn't "the bogan" the term for the Sith in early drafts of ANH?

    Yes. I do believe so. Either that or it was what we now know as the "Dark Side."

    Bogan is not really used in Australia anymore... it is one of those slang words that is phased out...

    I had to check this thread out just to see what the hell a "bogan" was, and to my surprise, I discover a little gem that has brightened my day: there are mullets in Australia! Praise the Lord!

    Gath, I think you forgot at least one -

    the irreverant Bevan

    A bevan tends to blend bogan, geek and nerd, except the object of their obsession is near universally a hotted up car.

    What is the name for someone who encapsulates qualities of both a nerd and a geek?

    To find the knowledge you seek, you would have to locate there king...
    [image=http://www.bernd-leitenberger.de/bill-gates.jpeg]

    Anywho, here's what I know...

    Nerd
    Someone who is the opposite of all that's cool. Does Not have technical or computer skills, more likely to be interested in crime or pulp magazines, preparing them for later association with porn mags.
    This would be the child phase of the dirty old man.
    Example, Crispin Glover.
    [image=http://www.poptel.org.uk/rjf/media/nerd.jpg]
    Geek
    Over used term, really more of an adjective.
    For example, a person could be a "Star Wars" geek, or a "Computer" geek, or even a car stereo geek.
    Term makes more sense in terms of describing someone who is associated with something not commonly thought of as cool.
    A person might be a "closet geek", where as there devotion is more specific and a secret.
    Think of the many of us who work normal jobs with no one knowing we are Star Wars "geeks".
    Example, Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry is a normal succesful guy, likes younger women, but is a secret Superman "geek".
    [image=http://www.theweirdwideweb.com/content%20images/16072002/geek.jpg]
    Dork
    Sadly this is the lower scale of the uncool. Usually these folks have a slobbish apperance, which can be in both of the previous, but is more likely here. Typically overweight.
    The difference is that the dork does not have the brains of the geek or nerd. For the most part loveable and harmless.
    Example, Chris Farely

    Typically overweight.

    Are you calling me fat?!?!

    8-}

    For the most part loveable and harmless.

    I may be lovable but I am far from harmless. My dorkiness is a dangerous weapon. I just have not learned how to use it properly. 8-}

    I've turned to the Dorkside!!! [face_devil]

    Fear me!!!

    Around my parts we define the terms as such:

    A Geek is a hardcore fan of something as previously said. Good people in gneral, a bit diffrent but of course, but good none the less. Mayhaps a bit obsessive, but they have fun with it. Also, they're fairly intelligent as a rule. And even if they realize there inherint superiority to others, they remain humble.

    A Nerd is basically a more hardcore Geek. And there also more stuck up about there intrests and such. They don't realize as a Geek does, that they are infact a bit "unhip" and have superiority complexes.

    A Dork is basically a wannabe Geek. You know the type, they think they're cool, have friends they don't, or know a lot on a subject, but they infact really don't know that much at all. Somewhat slovenly in apperance. But unlike a Geek, they don't also look kept at the same time. They try to be nice to everybody, they want friends. Yet they usually scare and offend. Possibly with oders.

    A Bogan is an Aussie term it seems, can't help you there.

    I myself am a hardcore Geek, and darn proud.

    For you americans, a bogan is a redneck, but instead of driving a pickup and listening to country music, they drive 1980's Fords or Holdens (Once they're affiliated with either brand, they will never own the other) and they listen to AC/DC and Led Zep.

    Also in place of the checked shirt they will wear a black t-shirt with a heavy metal logo and jersey, possibly with the Ford (Or Triumph) logo knitted in in red wool.

    They wear black jeans and never take them off, not even to swim and if it's a midsummer's day.

    Mullets are the hairstyle of choice. Premixed Bourbon & cola, or cheap beer the drink.

    Bogan women can wear the same attire as the menfolk, but are ofetn seen in tie-died purple dresses, velvet jacket or trousers.

    In New Zealand the term Bogan has slowly been taken over by the term "Westie" due to the proliferation of Bogans in West Auckland (and the West Coast of the South Island).

    A geek is someone who thinks Hyperdrive exists, and a nerd is someone who tries to make Hyperdrive exist :p

    I've never heard of a Bogan.

    Who's from Britain?

    The UK's not the only nation that uses 'real' English, rather than the ridiculous dumbed down american version.

    Yes, but Brit English is pure, whereas other versions of the mother tongue suffer from varying degrees of contamination. :D
