What movies do you wish John Williams did the music for but didn't?

An intersting thing to talk about. I'm not really sure what I think right now.

Any film that had a forgettable score.

    Gladiator
    Waterworld
    Planet of the Apes
    Sixth Sense
    Jurassic Park 3

I also wish he did the score for Left Behind

Planet of the Apes and Gladiator both had good if not great scores.

As did Waterworld. I absolutely love that score.

I wish there was an alternate version of the Fight Club score by Williams. I wouldn't want to lose the original.

I agree on Jurassic Park III. No matter how much people knock that movie, I still like it a bit, but can't get over what the man did to Williams' poor, defenseless themes. ;)

Fellowship of the Ring - I know, it's blasphemy, but I really feel the Shore score was bad.

On a non-JW but still related topic, I wish John Barry would do the Bond scores again, because it's just not Bond without his music. I'm sick of the techno crap, which is going to seriously date the Brosnan films in ten years' time.

I disagree, dehrian. I love where David Arnold is going with the Bond scores.

But you are right about them feeling dated years from now.

    Here's a few ideas...

I loved Elfman's score for Edward Scissorhands, but it would have been interesting to hear what John Williams would have done with it.

John Williams scoring Terminator II would have been exciting.

I actually think William's score for Titantic would have been similar to Horner's because certain things about the film definitely guided Horner in the direction he took and I think Williams would have picked up on the same "cues" and followed course.

A Williams score for ANY Stanley Kubrick film would have been interesting but we know Mr. Williams, a very nice guy, wouldn't have put up with Stanley for long. (yes, I know he did AI, but that was Spielberg, not Kubrick in the director's chair.)

And last but not least, I think (don't laugh) I would have liked to have heard John Williams score the Road Warrior. I wonder what "the Humongous" theme would have sounded like, LOL.

If you haven't already voted in the poll mentioned in my signature...please express your opinion...time's running out. Thanks!

The Colour Purple. I can't remember who did compose the music for it, but it stank.

I cannot answer this question, it just seems illogical to me.

    A few things,

A score does NOT need to be memorable to be good, in fact, it could be completely argued otherwise. As long as it serves the movie, then I have no problem with it.

Spielberg consciously made the decision to choose Quincy Jones as the composer of The Color Purple instead of his usual companion, Williams. By any account, a very good score and soundtrack.

I'm somewhat glad that Williams is not continuing with the Jurassic Park franchise. His original themes in the first movie were for certain situations, they were not leitmotifs for characters or distinct objects. Because of that, they can still be played, but they have less to be developed into. Williams showed this in his composition for The Lost World, where he essentially tried to create completely new themes and an overall more action oriented score. Instead of staying with the franchise and either trying to create new themes for these more and more action oriented movies or just replaying his old themes, I'm glad he moved on. And yes, Davis didn't do a good job on Williams' themes in JP3.
