Okay so I am curious as to what rank Krennic was in the film 'Rogue One'. (catalyst spoilers): I have read Catalyst where he started as a Lieutenant Commander then got promoted to Commander then got demoted back to Lieutenant Commander. So I am guessing that he is still a Lieutenant Commander when he finds the Erso family in hiding but the main part of the film takes place 15 years later and Krennic's uniform insignia changes when we see him again so i'm wondering what rank he is during the main part of the film up until his death.
LOL! If I remember correctly, Krennic was Director of the Department of Advanced Weapons Research, answerable to Imperial Intelligence. Thinking of canon and retconning legends, I would imagine that this would be the department tasked with the personal projects of various high ranking officials from the Empire, like the Tie Defender, the Dark Troopers, the Tie Phantom, etc. That was his position, but his exact rank eludes me. I think he was vying for the rank of Rear Admiral all along, right? and he ended Catalyst as a Commander if I remember correctly, but I would imagine the completion and functionality of the Death Star would have earned him a promotion or two...
Wookieepedia has him listed as a Lieutenant Commander. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Orson_Callan_Krennic
He's a Fleet Admiral equivalent. I think it was a missed opportunity not to make him a Grand Admiral.
Back in the old EU, usually an Admiral or General or Moff was in charge of these special projects and superweapons (like a General oversaw the Dark Trooper project, I think). Though Krennic was still outranked by Grand Moff Tarkin of course (and was a joke to Vader). He did order around the personnel at Scarif a lot though, so maybe he outranked them. Either that or the Scarif personnel had gotten so lazy they just listened to whoever sounded like they were in charge (as the actual local admiral was treating the post as a semi-vacation, if I remember right).
Pretty sure he is an Admiral, judging by his plaque. As we see in the film, he is a military director first and foremost. In the prologue of the film, I'm pretty sure he is a Lieutenant Commander. You wouldn't be able to tell based on his plaque.
I'll have to check the novel Catalyst again, but I think it does mention he's a lieutenant commander during that time (which itself is set before the opening scene of Rogue One). Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I'm not sure that he was demoted - the conversation with Mas Amedda begins with him saying "I refuse to accept a demotion to lieutenant commander" (explaining why) and ends with Mas saying "Finish what you started, Commander" I think the demotion was only threatened, just before that conversation began, and not carried out.
Anybody else read Adventures in Wild Space: The Rescue? For those of you who don't know it's set around a year after ROTS. And while Krennic doesn't appear in the story his personal K Series security droid does and it refers to him as DIRECTOR! Even though at that time (as told in Catalyst) he was still in the process of manipulating Galen Erso as a Lieutenant Commander Seriously does the story group even acknowledge these Adventures In Wild Space Books?!
Has that been confirmed - or it it just based on Ezra's apparent age - still being treated as a baby by his parents? It might be a little later than that scene suggests.
Director is not a military rank, it's a occupational position. So Krennic can be both a Director and a Lieutenant Commander or whatever Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Understood--but Krennic is not a part of the typical military hierarchy. He's an engineer-turned-managing director for the advanced research wing of the military. His rank is largely perfunctory.
The short version is I see Krennic as the head of DARPA. Which is a very very high rank in the Imperial heirarchy and why Tarkin is a rival and vice versa.
Krennic is inferior to the Director of Military Intelligence. That should work as a nice benchmark. Using Rogue Squadron as a source, DoMI is higher than a Grand Moff. Therefore Director of Advanced Weapons Research is possibly on par with a Grand Moff. Just an assumption, but still a possibility.
He's not on par with a grand moff -- which is why Tarkin could just take the Death Star away from him. Militarily, he has the rank equivalence of an admiral. A grand moff has the equivalence of a priority sector commander or somesuch (in tweets discussing Pryce, Pablo mentioned that their common insignia was from WEG). Missa ab iPhona mea est.
Also, for someone like Tarkin, you don't wait for a rival to become your equal, you take them out before they get there.
