Discussion What Size Roles Do You Want The Original Cast To Have?

Small roles... I prefer to see new characters!

 

What post? I am curious.

I don't know the times of the characters of the previous movies but please have more time spent on the OT Big 3 than what was spent on Dooku in ROTS. 4 minutes max? No thanks.

Definitely large roles.

We're getting a wealth of new Star Wars characters and stories, so I'll be very happy if after all these years we get to really focus on the main gang for a little bit before they bow out and let others take over. New characters are a 100% guarantee with all the plans Disney has for the franchise. But our chance to see Luke, Leia, and Han on the silver screen has a much more narrow window, especially if we're talking major roles and not bit parts.

 

"Whatever the story requires" Which to me means "however much Larry Kasdan thinks they need to be in the movie."

After the events of Celebration, I have 100% faith in the team in charge of Star Wars. However they use the original characters, I think they'll use them to advance the story along, while introducing the new characters.

 

Well, Hamill said it many times to not expect them to be on screen for long period of time as Episode VII is all about new characters.

People need to start remembering this to feel less disappointed in December and not flood this forum with posts 'why their role was so small?'

 

You leave me with a hard decision to make. I want to see them as much as I can, if for no other reason but that there may never be another SW film with the original cast in it again, and so I wish to see them as much as possible before that happens. Though I do want an introduction of new characters, possibly the original cast could play similar roles in the new films as Obi-Wan and Yoda did in the original trilogy.

 

I can't find the link this interview now, but he said their roles are minimal and fans shouldn't expect too much...

I would have been completely OK with it not including us, but I do think having the original cast members there gives it a sense of continuity and scope. But mind you, it’s really about the new generation, it’s not about us.

Small roles

As much as I love the original characters, it is time to move on. They have plenty of novels and comics they could still make about the OT characters, and that is where they mostly belong at this point.

 

They still had good sized roles for Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda in the OT.

 

Well, I voted "large", because I do want to see as much of them as possible, but really I would say I just want them to have "significant" roles - screen time isn't the most important thing, it's that the characters are important to the story as a whole, and not just shoehorned in for the sake of evoking nostalgia (which I'm sure they won't be) (not that I have any problem with nostalgia ...)

Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and the Droids. I guarantee they'll have significant roles...after all, passing the torch takes some skill, and these young actors are getting schooled by the best!

 

Kind of hard to pass on the torch if the OT Big 3's roles are virtually non-existent in the ST.

 

I voted medium sized roles.

I'd like them to be in it enough so it doesn't seem like they are shoe horned in the film for the sake of it.

 

I think after all this time, and not just time passing between films, but an entire prequel trilogy made in between, that it would be nice to see the main cast of the OT in pretty decent sized roles. Too many questions would still persist if they immediately go from the people who started this whole thing to a whole new set of characters and scenarios and just briefly explain away what happened to the original cast. Like somebody else pointed out, we have plenty of time to get to know new characters. I think this one should be heavily original cast oriented, not for homage, not to appease the public, but because it makes the most sense. Otherwise it will seem more like an anthology trilogy series, that just jumps from one cast of characters to another with only a few characters recycled from the previous trilogy. And quite frankly, sure it was nice to see how it all came to be from a chronological point of view in the PT, but I think it would be a downright insult to just immediately write off the most central and essential characters of the monstrosity that is Star Wars by giving them minor roles in Episode 7.

 

Substantial, but not at the expense of the new characters who will take the story forward.

 

I would like to see a lot of Luke. I want to see how he's changed since ROTJ. Same with Leia. Also, I'd like to see them be the ones passing the torch to the next generation. As for the rest, small or medium sized roles depending on the story.
