I've never played KOTOR II before, but I'm assuming we never get a glimpse behind this shrouded figure's mask.
    So: what species is he?

    Absolutely Nothing.

(Some would say exactly what you are about to become.)

It seems your schwartz is as big as mine!

Anyway, Wiki has him listed as "Unknown (Formerly Human)" though how someone can be "formerly Human" is beyond me, so...Human.

Actually, Visas (at least) can get a glimpse of his face if you let her. She tells you that he's "Just a man." So he's human.

Yeah, fixed that fanwank. As for the "man" part, it might just as well refer to his gender.

Or it might just mean that his Force-signature (which is what she sees, after all) is no different than anyone else's.

Although I have to wonder why she didn't try looking at him before the Exile fought him...

Perhaps he is part human and part Sithspawn.[face_mischief]

It's not quite fanwank. Kreia does say he is "no longer human", referring to how far he's been consumed by the dark side. But literally, biologically speaking, he would still be human.

Some speculation exists that originally--before KOTORII's storyline was lobodimized by a neccessity of time--that Darth Nihlius was in fact you. He was your "darker half" split from you at the Battle of Malachor V following the many deaths and the consequential ripping of you and your abandonment of the Force. KOTORII's plot is too chopped up and pieced together at the last second to make any semblance of most anything. Supposedly, Visas's yanking off the mask was supposed to reveal your face (a la Empire Strikes Back). Just what I've heard. Can't confirm it, but I guess this makes him human.

The game was subtitled "The Sith Lords" and we never did get much information on our Sith Lords. Odd.

That's just a fanon idea. There's no evidence the game was ever meant to have that.

Also, it would pretty much just be KotOR again. I like that the hero and the major antagonist are two different people.

I don't know if it's necessarily just how far Nihilus fell that makes him not human. The Dark Side can do serious damage to one's body, as we all believe despite ROTS. It's possible that after (how long? 7 years? 10?) since Malachor V, Nihilus' body could have been almost completely destroyed by his usage of the Dark Side, and he does stuff like his little stunt on Katarr to keep his shriveled, soulless body alive. For all we know, underneath all the robes and mask, Nihilus could make Sion look like the picture of perfect health.

Although, in answer to the question, Nihilus was once a human.

No matter how disfigured you become, you're still human.

Would someone like Cunderthol still be considered human even after the entechment transfer into a HRD?

No, but there's no evidence to suggest that Nihilus has transferred to another body of a seperate species/inorganic form. Shrivelled, messed up, a holy shell? Sure. But human.

Call me crazy, but I had this idea that Darth Nihilus was just what his name implied: that he was nothing. (imagine Kreia explaining this, now) Formerly human, yes, but that his physical body had long since been dissolved or devoured by the dark side (or his own hunger, in a bizarre Force-self-cannibalism), and that what remained was only the dark spirit, the raw essence of mindless hunger, that had possessed a set of black robes, a mask, and a lightsaber. A true manifestation of the dark side of the Force.

This theory remains a plausible one, in all facets. You never actually see the man behind the mask, so you cannot know for sure if there is a face there at all. Visas has Miraluka-vision, and could conceivably penetrate what normal eyesight could not and see what was once Darth Nihilus -- a man.

Of course, the theory would have a somewhat stronger ground if Nihilus had evaporated after being dealt the fatal blow, in some grand display that would look like the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi combined with the death of Emperor Palpatine.

In the opening screeen of TSL, the one with Sion, Nihilus, and Visas, you can see the faint shadow of a human face below the mask.
