So we've all heard the EU's version of curses, but what I am wondering is, where do these words come from and what do they mean?

So you mean what do the words themselves mean, rather than what their Earth equivelants are? Ahh...a very interesting take on this topic. The truth is most seem either self explanatory - sithspit, sithspawn - or completely nonsense. The one that comes to mind that seems any different is "rodder," which, while perhaps not obvious at first glance, appears to be phallic, or perhaps refer to an act one engages in with a phallus.

Yeah, I'm talking about both, the English equivelant and the origins of the less common words.

Well English equivelants are often easy to pick out from usage.

    Kark/Kriff = ****
    Shavit/Sithspawn/Sithspit = ****
    Bastarve = Bastard

Don't forget "poo-doo," which can mean "fodder" or, well, what it sounds like.

DAMMIT! Freaking sensors even sensor you when you sensor yourself? Ridonkulous, I tell you. Ridonkulous. Anyhow, the Wook has a list of slang and the articles are uncensored.

The Black Fleet series dispensed with SW jargon altogether and used the real-world equivalents.

Granted, it didn't go so far as kark/kriff...

Maybe they mean something completely different. Perhaps the stronger word for "poop" in our world doesn't have such bad connotations with various beings probably finding some forms of it as a delicacy. ;) Perhaps the F bomb isn't something that is quite as raunchy in the "Twi'lek slave girl on every corner" galaxy. Kriff and Kark may just be...kriff and kark. Sithspawn and Sithspit don't have to be related to "poop" they could just be something very evil. (Although I always am bothered by Jaina or others using Sithspawn. I mean..doesn't that hurt Luke or Leia's feelings? They ARE after all, the children of Darth Vader and therefore "Sithspawn". "Bastarve" could just be someone that is really really really hungry. I mean, I love my father and all but if it came down to the choice of having food or knowing my dad....sorry dad! "Emperor's black bones!" I don't understand either. Isn't that a good thing? Don't you WANT the emperor to be like...a pile of black bones? They were far worse when white and covered with midichlorian soaked evil flesh...

    :)

That one came from a rumor that the Emporer actually had black bones.

Many of the words do have explanations... I dig "mudcrutch" and "son of a murglak".

No, I just remember that they used "Barve" as Bast*** in Last Man Standing and I remembered modifying it 'Battlestar Galactica' style in order to sound more like its host word and thus more like cursing. The biggest problem with most Star Wars profanity is it doesn't sound dirty, short, and something that can be shouted.

KRIFF is easy to say and thus easier to believe it's **** than Poodoo.

I used "Kriffin'" the other day and didn't even realize it!

Apparently no one around me noticed, since I didn't get any weird looks...

It's all about context and ingenuity. "I'm gonna kriff you in the kark hole" actually sounds somewhat worse than the RL equivalent.

QFT. And of those that exist, I only really like "Fierfek!"... "kriff" just sounds weird to me.

As for "Barve", you're right... it rather sounded to me like something normal, maybe like the earthly "maggot" (larva^^ :p ).

[face_thinking] Does it? 8-} At least not to me, to be honest.

A barve is just a domesticated food animal.
