I was surprised to read, on Wookieepedia, that Dooku was once on the Council! The relevant link didn't really take me to the source of this. When would this have been? I tried to figure it out. It says he took no missions after Baltizaar, so before that. He didn't seem to be on the Council during his and QGJ's encounter with Lorian Nod, and if QGJ was his 1st apprentice, I would he'd be on Council only after becoming a Master (ie, when QGJ was knighted).

It mysteriously appeared in the OS databank around the time TCW started airing.

I just assumed his time on the Jedi Council occurred slightly after 66 BBY and he left it around 32 BBY....where he comes one of the Lost Twenty.

He wasn't on it in 33 BBY in JC: Acts of War, and it has to have been before Jedi Apprentice (44 BBY) since Obi-Wan went before the Council a number of times in that series.

Can't argue with that. So now we've probably narrowed it down to sometime between 66 BBY (Dooku and Qui-Gon Jinn embark on their last mission as Master and Padawan) and 44 BBY. Though I suppose he could've joined the Jedi Counsel prior to 66 BBY, but to me, it makes sense that this occurs after his last mission with Padawan Jinn.

It was probably before the Battle of Baltizaar...he supposedly refused to take missions from the Council after that, so it would seem logical he wasn't ON it at the time

And you are right, it seems likely it was pre-44 BBY. He isn't on the Council during the Stark Hyperspace War, and IIRC, Dooku and OB1 had never met (why am I thinking that?! Which maybe means it was before OB1 was born?

In Star Wars...if you were ever a Jedi over the age of 30...you will be on "a" Council sooner or later.

They've just about knocked off any veneer of prestige the council ever had.

Dooku won the Jedi-Council-Seat-For-A-Day contest like this bloke?

well, we don't know how long the "Short Term" a Councillor can serve IS. Sadly, the EU seems to think any Councillor who doesn't make the transition between movies must have been killed off (Yaddle, Poof)...the idea of the Short, Long, and Life Terms doesn't seem to have caught on with most EU authors. Only in the reference sources do we see Council retirees like Jocasta Nu.

Yeah, the most logical explanation is that Dooku was one of those "short term" Council members (albeit likely one they might have intended to make a full-fledged Council member), but the different "terms" of the Jedi Council members seems to be an EU invention that most of the EU ignores, as you say. Kind of like the whole bit around Episode I where Ki-Adi-Mundi was supposed to be only a Jedi Knight while on the Council (and the implication from some sources that the Council had a "slot" that was for a senior Knight or at least not "locked in" to all being formal Jedi Masters...which was a pretty good idea, IMO).

And yes, the introduction of "Lesser Councils" has muddied the waters further. Authors could easily retcon Dooku's "Council membership" to being on one of the more prestigious lesser Councils as opposed to the "High Council" most people are familiar with.

somehow I think it more appropriate if Dooku's membership be the High Council. I think he's old enough, and the details on pre-44 BBY Council composition few enough, he can be fit in. Furthermore, it fits his personality. As revealed in Watson's excellent little books, even as a Jedi Dooku was obsessed with gaining power, knowledge, and prestige. I can easily see him realizing his lifelong ambition and joining the High Council, only to find it fall short of his desires. Enter Sidious...

Plus, I really can't see his personality fitting into most of the Lesser Councils, especially Reconciliation and Reassignment! Even Qui-Gon found his master cold, so Reconciliation wouldn't be his forte, and his perfection obsession would suggest to me he would see Reassignment of "washouts" a waste of time. The only Lesser Council I can see interesting him would be First Knowledge, as he was fascinated with the secrets of forbidden holocrons.

So he walked away from the Jedi Council when he left the order?

I'm not sure how I feel about this "character update", and don't really see any reason the OS would add it since they haven't done anything with this info on TCW.

I wish we would get more about Dooku leaving. There's some real story potential there with Qui-gon being his apprentice and Yoda being his Master.

The blurb about his murder of Syfo-Dyas in Labrintyh of Evil was fascinating, too bad it wasn't fleshed out in a Dooku novel.

Question - did Yoda take another Padawan after Dooku?

Man, makes you wonder... when he started training what Luke would think if he knew both Yoda's and Obi-wan's last apprentice fell to the dark side. Those aren't good odds. LOL.

I think he would leave the Council well before when he left the Order...probably pre-Galidraan, certainly in the wake of Baltizaar at the LATEST, since he refused to take missions from the Council in Baltizaar's wake. And if he had a short or even long, rather than permanent seat, it may just be his eat expired, rather than he "left" the Council per se. If it disappointed him, as I suspect, he may have had no interest in another term even if offered.

I think we need more Dooku stories period. Dark Rendezvous and Watson's brief glimpse are the only stories that really have given us much insight into him as an individual
