If More American Graffiti (1979) had been a success, what would the third one have been like? Maybe it would be them meeting again in 1969, during the Apollo 11 celebration and having a really crazy night.
Probably would've gone back to the format of the first film detailing one night at one point in time. My idea is that it just focuses on Steve in 1977. He drops his youngest kid off at a friend's house--they're going to see Star Wars and have a sleepover. From there he stops by McDonald's (the old burger joint has closed and is now a used car lot). Just when Steve thinks the world of his youth has completely disappeared he embarks on a one night odyssey where he gets into all kinds of crazy stuff and sees shades of the past throughout. He stays out all night and picks up his kid in the morning. The kid is going on and on about the hero Luke Skywalker and Tatooine. Steve just sees the town around him. The final shot of the film is John Milner in his hot rod passing them in the opposition direction.
You obviously forgot the best part of More American Graffiti. It ends with Milner driving over a hill and truck heading in the opposite direction. Of course if Maul can survive getting cut in half, a drunk driving accident is nothing.
Symbolism. Of course Milner died. That was known at the end of the original film when the postscript reveals the fates of the four main characters.
The ending to American Graffiti is a gut punch with Milner & Toad dying in the written recaps. In More American Graffiti the ending is haunting. We've just seen Milner have the best day of his life, with the promise of an even better tomorrow. However we know it all ends when his car goes out of sight. This tragedy is done better than the entire PT.
It's a great scene. Don't agree with the PT negativity, though. All of SW most moving scenes are found in the PT for my money.
I would like American Graffiti 3 to show that John Milner survived the accident, was rescued by a man, and was missing until 1969 with no memory of who he was, and Eva always thought of him as supposedly dead. Until he goes to Times Square and so does she, and when they meet again, he remembers everything and they kiss during the arrival of 1970.
