At the beginning of TPM, before the destroyer droid arrive, Qui-Gon tries to bore a hole in the door so he can get to the separatists. The way it's filmed, with the close up and the music building, it seems like it's supposed to be significant. So what's the significance? Why is there emphasis on this particular move by Qui-Gon?

Well, if that was the case, why didn't he break all the way through?

    He was stopped by droideka.

    "They're still coming through!"

    "This is impossible!"

The fact he got through it at all show the Nemoidians to be in deep err...poodoo if it weren't for the heavily advanced droideka models.

It was because it looked really cool and it showed that it would take more than a security door to stop a determined Jedi.

He would have gotten through too if the droidekas hadn't provided a significant distraction.

This is the beginning of sw, if you want to buy GL's order of viewing, and he wants to show how versatile and power the laser sword really is

Yeah, it showed how cool the lightsaber and that Qui Gon was about show the TF guys the error of their ways. Unfortunately the destroyer droids got there before the door was melted open.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were trying to get to the Viceroy. Qui-Gon tried cutting through the door. They were interrupted by droidekas. They ran away. Simple.

Its a really cool moment, one of my favourites in the whole film. If you're watching 1-6, thats the first time we get to see a Jedi in action and it really shows what they can do, even something "impossible" as Nute calls it can't stop them.

In the commentary on the TPM DVD, Lucas says that the whole first part was done as a contrast to ANH, where it was the good guys against an immensly powerful opponent.

So Basically, Qui-Gon is Godzilla and Nute Gunray is thousands of fleeing Japanese.

I always thought it was to highlight it as a "cool" moment.

After all, we'd never seen anything similar. Up to that point, lightsabers were held to their OT rules, when they would bounce off the rails on walkways.

I see it as part of a larger pattern in TPM of fitting in new Jedi powers that seemed logical, but arose in the EU (usually the video games). Also on this list are the Force speed a jump abilities we saw exhibited in the film.

I always felt it was to show the power of a Jedi. Also cause the TF shut the doors on Qui Gon and before that tried to kill him and Obi Wan.

I always tought that the music suggested QGon used the Force to cut the blastdoor, not just his lightsaber. I don't now, somehow making the blade stronger, longer perhaps? He was practical, our Qgon, always using the Living force an' stuff.

It reminded the audience that if Luke was on Endor during the battle he could have cut through those bunker doors easily.

first time I read the title of this thread, I thought to myself, what in the world does Liam Neeson have to do with Jim Morrisson??? Anakin, I could see...."Come on baby, light my funeral pyre, try to set my armor on....FIIIIIIRE!!!" but, then I see that it is not about that. My bad.

If it weren't for the droid dekas, Qui-Gon would have sliced his way through the doors and he and Obi-Wan would have brought about a settlement. Nute Gunray was lucky.

Well...i always thought it was cos GL likes glowing things...i mean hes got a fasination with hot stuff...light sabers, the melting doors, Anakin burning to death, then burning after death.

    thats just me of course!

I find it somewhat confusing, the matter this opening doors issue during the prequels is handled. Why is Obi-Wan able to open the door on Kamino by using the Force, but Qui-Gon isn't able to open the Trade Fed door by using the Force? Can Jedi only open doors with the Force if they are unlocked?

Are there any other situation when Jedi are in front of closed doors, and how do they handle it?

Hahahah, this is good stuff. had me laughing out loud...
Or simply "break on through to the other side" of the blast doors...

wow..that thought never crossed my mind. its pretty cool to think of that now..

Edit: oh, and my thoughts on the topic... I just think it was really cool scene, that showed the power of the jedi, the power of the saber...And this was enhanced by some cool music to show back up that these guys are powerful, intelligent and dotn give up easily

I think it was just to show how powerful the jedi and the lightsabres are. The whole time Obi and Jinn were on that ship i think it was mainly to show what kinda of stuf the jedi could realy do, since in the ot we couldn't realy see the true potensial of the lightsabre and the jedi. The door thing was just to show how very powerful the lightsabre is and what it could do.
