Have you heard about all the deaths in France due to heat stroke? It's especially hitting the elderly hard. Some estimates place the death toll above 10,000!

I think I may have the solution for our staunch, Gallic friends: air conditioning. Air conditioning is a process whereby the temperature and humidity of the air in a given space (such as the interior of a building) are greatly reduced compared to the ambient temperature and humidity of the outside atmosphere. Here in the United States we have enjoyed this technology for many decades and do not have thousands upon thousands of our senior citizens dying because, well, because it's summer.

Here are some links to some of the manufacturers of air conditioning units in the U.S.:

    Rheem Air Conditioning
    Carrier Air Conditioning
    Trane Air Conditioning
    Lennox Air Conditioning

(Please keep in mind that the thermostats on these units express the temperature in Fahrenheit. Therefore, 22 degrees would not be an appropriate room temperature).

    I hope this helps.

It's the same as the frnech word for the number of french people it takes to defend Paris; it's never come up, and therefore hasn't been invented.

It just amazes me that all those people are dying from the heat wave there and the French have no idea how to deal with this heat or were prepared... There have to be third world countries who would be more prepared than them.

Well, I love to make fun of the French as much as anybody, but since we just blew out our power grid and can't keep up with our electrical needs because of all the air conditioners, it's really not the right time to suggest them.

Well, I despise air conditioning to begin with, so...

But I used to live in Europe, and they don't usually need air conditioning, so that's why they don't have them.

    Kinda sad.

It's pretty obvious as to what happened here...

    1) America = God's People
    2) The French angered America by blocking the Iraq War
    3) France feels God's wrath

To answer the original question in the subject, the French word for air-conditioning is "climatisation". To say that a room is air-conditioned the word is "climatisé".

So many preventable deaths is horribly sad. Air conditioning isn't the only way to keep cool. Fan's, water, open windows, just common sense things. What I'm having trouble understanding is why so many elderly people were not looked after. Is a heat wave really such a rare occurrance that nobody knew to do such things? It's difficult to grasp.

I'm with JFT. In Europe you usually don't need Air Conditioning. No one had it where I lived. There were maybe a few hot days and you could get through them. The entire summer was never really hot like it is in the US in some places.

Dragar: Yep. In fact, I'm pretty suspicious of those numbers. 10,000 people? In FRANCE? Come on. Those kinds of numbers are usually reserved for giant earthquakes in Central America or monsoon flooding in Bangladesh. And it's not like the heat in France was really all that much. You want hot, spend the summer in the American southwest. Or heck, even D.C. That's all I'm saying.

I read something that said the numbers were a bit suspicious anyway, since they were talking about deaths "indirectly related" to the heat. How indirectly does it have to be?

Vincent: And you know what they call a... a... a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?

Vincent: No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the **** a Quarter Pounder is.

Jules: Then what do they call it?

Vincent: They call it a "Royale" with cheese.

Jules: A "Royale" with cheese! What do they call a Big Mac?

Vincent: A Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it "le Big-Mac".

Jules: "Le Big-Mac"! Ha ha ha ha! What do they call a Whopper?

Vincent: I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King.

Maybe there's going to be 10,943 deaths to match the number of bodies at Normandy, like a curse

It is not just in france that people have died. The 10.000 death toll counts all over europe.

We have had one hell of a warm summer over here. At times the heat was unbareble. It makes me wonder why airconditioning isn´t more common over here.
The only places where parts are airconditioned are office buildings and supermarkets.

But anyway it seems like the cold northwind is returning. The wind is colder and the leaves are turning slightly yellow, so it is only a matter of time before the news starts telling stories of people getting drunk, and passing out in the snow, and therefor dying.

Maybe they'd like to come over here to America to escape it, after all, we all know how much they love America ;)

They could even get a chance to see what the 'Jango head butting Obi-Wan' scene looks like :)

    1. They don't have airconditioning because appearantly it's bad for the enviroment.

    2. Laughing with people dying is a Neddie-no-no! French people didn't laugh when the WTC collapsed either.

    3. There have been heat waves in America with more than 500 people dead so don't talk like something like that could never happen to you.

    4. Spain also had 1000+ deaths.

The summer I was in France, it got up to the high 80s or low 90s once (I never was sure--I couldn't do Celsius conversions worth a fart :p ). Me being from the American Southeast, it didn't feel that hot to me. It wasn't even as warm as a normal summer day. But you would have thought my host family and the people in my neighborhood were dying, fanning themselves and moaning, "Oh! Il fait chaud!"

But the 98 degrees now with no A/C? OUCH. Don't diss them. I'd be fussing too.

I don't even leave my apartment in the summertime usually. If the temp is above 85 and it's humid, I want A/C.

    America is bigger. And hotter.

And those with numbers for Spain, PPOR. Both of you.
