It just seemed like he was trying to do Force-karate or something. Everything he was about to battle someone (particularly Grievous) he had to do all these crazy exaggerated stances and hand movements. I liked it a bit better in the OT where the Force could be controlled without moving around so much.

NOooo!!!!, those stances were awesome. He was a freewheeling butt kicking ObiWan, and he had the best saber moves in the whole movie. I love to two finger move when he draws his saber. classic. and Ewan seemed to be enjoying himself as well, I thought he owned the ObiWan character in the PT.

Obi's fighting stances were fantastic! On the Invisible Hand just as Grievous is about to break the window, you can see him spinning his Lightsaber around like a madman!

Seriously though it might be to with the fact that GG has a wierd fighting style himself with the 4 blades, so Obi adapts into a style that can counter it.

I thought Obi's gestures were a little weird, too, especially when he was facing off with Grievous. It's almost like he found some new Force powers and was over implementing.

Obi-Wan really likes the whole "I'm going to poke your eyes out!" stance. Is that based on a real martial arts stance? Anyone know? Bueler?

What I didn't like was just because, especially in the scene where he fights Grievous on Utapau, when the droids are coming towards him, he does this whole thing with his fingers - and then what. . .he did it for no reason? He looks up and crushes them. Clever, yes. I enjoyed that. I just thought it was too showy for no reason. When he did that with the two fingers, I thought he was going to hurl the droids into each other or something. It just seemed odd. And that line he said sounded like he read it off the script as he was saying it. "Oh. . .I don't think so!"

From the moment he drops down on Grievous with the "Hello There" he's all smiles, he was just having a bit of fun to mess with GGs mind a bit.

Where all the so-called martial arts experts when you need them! They are always explaning the duels based on their "experience," so where are they when I need some info on Obi-Wan's eye-poking stance?

Well Grievous is supposed to have fear in his arsenal to defeat Jedi, so Obi was just showing off his moves to show Grievous he isn't scared a bit, that its all a little game. The reason he does the stance and then just drops the thing on the bodyguards head is because there was supposed to be a short fight with them before he even used the crushing block.

I have to agree with obiwankoti & Scorch62Delta. Watching the Jedi use their sabers and different styles, in their prime was AWESOME. Much better than watching "the Seniors" go at it in ANH.

I don't think its a proffesional fighting stance, more a dramatic cinematic stance. I'm no expert on it or anything but i know a little and that seems more of a hand to hand stance than a sword fight stance.

Obi-Wan's got a lot of experience under his belt. I'm sure he's trained in many forms of martial arts as a Jedi, and while fighting Greivous, he had to go through a few to try and find a weakness. You don't see him using such methods in the OT because 1) he'd old, and 2) he's more experienced and uses the Force more than his physical abilities.

One of the best lines in "Labyrinth of Evil" comes from Count Dooku's thoughts on the Jedi. To paraphrase, the Sith taught him to use a whole range of new powers...without the strange hand passes that the Jedi favored. [face_laugh]

In retrospect, the duel in ANH is now open to hilarious mockery. Knowing how far they have both fallen from their prime, it is like watching hollyfield and tyson flinging their bedpans at each other at age 70 from hospital beds on opposite sides of the room.

Weird gestures? People are shooting lightning out of their hands and doing lightspeed through space, and you're saying the gestures are unrealistic?

That particular gesture is a Mudra. It comes from esoteric Buddhism, you see it in Japanese and Chinese arts. It symbolizes the blade of a sword, and is said with a prayer to its patron saint when it is "drawn".

Sounds good. I liked the weird gestures. After all, you dont want to see the same fighting style over and over again. Something new is always good.

Obi-Wan's constant posing during the Grievous battle made me think of that *other* scifi trilogy...
