Maximilian Veers is most well known for leading the Imperial attack on the Echo base in the Hoth system. He's managed to get a bit of a following due for the fact that he's one the few Imperial officers that does something right. He also appears to be less afraid of Vader compared to others and is known to personally lead the attack himself. What's your opinion of the character?
You make some good points. I've always liked Veers because he had a presence not unlike Tarkin. It's too bad he did not get more screen time.
Yeah, wish he was in the films more too. I feel he's a bit underrated, as he appeared to be a more competent officer similar to Tarkin. I mainly made this thread to hear everybody's thoughts on this character.
Veers has always been one of my favorite characters. I felt he did his task well and gave the Empire a large victory. Veers needed larger screentime. He could use greater expansion upon in a novel.
He was so pleased with himself over his victory he decided he deserved to live forever, so he traveled to Earth to find the Holy Grail. Unfortunately for him, Han Solo got wind of it and followed him. We all know how that went down. Seriously, Veers was pretty cool. I love his quote in the AT-AT and the way he bows to Vader when he orders him to prepare his troops for surface attack.
I thought he was overhyped simply because he was the only visibly successful Imperial commander in the three films. Same with Boba Fett for the same reason - a successful underworld character that looks kinda bad***. When I first watched the films I actually had more sympathy for Piett - a man visibly afraid of his superior yet survived due to his competence. But then again I've always had a soft-spot for the underdog.
He seemed pretty efficient and capable. Although, it's easy to look good when your forces outgun the Rebels that badly.
Isn't he played by Julian Glover? Or am I mistaken? Anyway, that probably helps make him an interesting character.
Veers and Piett are both examples of good officers who just try to do their jobs efficiently and aren't dangerously ambitious. That's why Vader seems to give them some measure of respect.
Actually Yoda I think it more accurate to say Veers is one of the few Imperials viewers will *admit* did a few things right. Even Tarkin did that but most here will never cede it.
I'd say that the few competent Imperials are Tarkin and Veers. Piett is a strange case, as other than alerting Vader to the Hoth probe, he does very little else in ESB and even less in ROTJ. I always found Jerjerrod strangely interesting. He's just a simple man trying to do his job, despite nobody appreciating his work.
I likewise think Needa deserves some credit. I believe he died for taking responsibility. That's respectable.
Yeah Needa too. All though he did technically fail, at least he took the responsibility for his failure, unlike Ozzel.
To 'fail' is human. The real failure in SW is the lack of mercy shown. People don't need to die right and left because they make errors.
