I figured it out a while after Episode I. At first I was confused as to if Sidious from Episode I was Emperor from ROTJ. They dressed the same but looked differently. But once I found out they were the same then comes in the part of learing that Palpatine was Sidious who would become Emperor. I actually found out quicker that Palps was Emperor then I did to find out that Sidious was Emperor. There were a few clues left. Like when Mace and Yoda were saying "Always two there are, Master and Apprentice". "But was Maul the Master or Apprentice". Something like that but right after Mace said that, the camera turned to Palpatine smiling with a pretty evil look on his face.

It was before TPM when I noticed that the same actor that played the Emperor is now playing this Senetor guy.

Also, I kinda read spoilers... o_O

The very first time I saw TPM. I remember the feeling of nostalgia I had when seeing the nose, grin and chin of Darth Sidious and thinking they could only belong to one man! The fabulous Ian McDairmad![face_peace]

There was never any doubt for me. I always knew. Palpatine's back-story has been around for a long time. Besides, it's the same guy playing him.

Right when the hologram came on. I mean, they play the Emperor theme from Jedi. It's cool how we know it's Palpatine, but no one in the film knows until the end of the third one.

Well...the Emperor's name was Palpatine. The senator from Naboo's name was Palpatine. So I knew Senator Palpatine would become the Emperor Palpatine.

Sidious's voice, face (What little we could make of it) and robes were the exact same as Emperor Palpatine's. Sidious was introduced in TPM the EXACT SAME WAY (via Hologram) that Palpatine was introduced to us in TESB.

And as Siths_Revenge said...GL EVEN played the same themes for Sidious and the Emperor.

Throw in the fact that Ian McDiarmid played Senator Palpatine, Emperor Palpatine AND Sidious. It was REALLY obvious. (Except to the moron's that actually BELIEVED the "Pro-Clone theory".)

    Edit: Spelling

Why did you have to mention his nose first? You know Ian is self conscious about that! :)

    Ian McDiarmid interview:

How did you approach the transition of going from Palpatine to Sidious?
I think you'd probably be a very strange person indeed if you didn't know that I play Darth Sidious and Palpatine, although of course I never admitted it onscreen. There are no credits for Darth Sidious. But for anyone who has seen Return of the Jedi and heard that voice, seen the nose (laughing) - all those things - they knew it was me. But putting the two together is always problematic: Is it the same person, or is there another person who looks like him? All sorts of complicated reasons could be evinced for me playing two characters. But, of course, he was always the one person.

when i saw palpatine for the first time in TPm i knew he was sidious and i knew palaptine was the emperor because in the novel of ROTJ they call him palpatine several times so i knew as soon as i saw sidious and palpatine in the holo transmissions.

I did actually notice that Sidious wasn't in the credits for Episode I. But I hadn't seen ROTJ in a while, just saw it for the first time in years a few months ago.

Aside from the obvious fact that they look alike and are played by the SAME PERSON....there still was doubt for many....but it was obvious for me from the first time I saw Sidious via hologram in TPM...simply due to one man,JOHN WILLIAMS.....the music played in that scene is the Emperor's music, and if that is not a huge clue that they are the same person I dont know what is.....amazing how his music is linked throughout all the movies

I think it was while seeing TPM for the first time. My thoughts were cemented when the camera stopped on him during the funeral scene.

Well, I always knew Palpatine was The Emperor, and as soon as Darth Sidious appeared in front of the Trade Federation in his first scene in TPM, it was obvious that he was The Emperor, which also meant he was Palpatine by default.

Shortly after Ep. I when I was reading in a the Starwars Handbook I came across Emperor PALPATINE!!! So I was like, Senator Palpatine, Emperor Palpatine? That's too much of a coincidence!

I avoided spoilers, but I saw the actor's name mentioned SOMEWHERE before seeing the film. It was no surprise to me!

I knew the Emperor's last name was Palpatine. Seeing Sidious, I was like "Hey, who else could it be?"

I could tell they were the same by the similarities of the two. However, I did have plenty of other reasons why they might not be the same person...

Well I knew that Senator Palpatine was the Emperor just because of the name. But with Sidious it was slightly different. I didn't follow the spoilers before TPM and the only image I had seen of Sidious was from a Time Magazine rundown of TPM. It was a small side view of Sidious in hologram. But he was listed as being different from Palpatine. So my initial thought was that it was some new Sith Lord. In fact, I didn't even think it was a hologram but a force ghost. Thinking this Darth Sidious is guiding Darth Maul from beyond the grave. I know, kinda stupid. Then I remember seeing a front image of Sidious and realized the neck clasp was the same was the Emperor's. But going into the movie (TPM) I still wasn't totally sure because at the time I didn't have the internet to confirm my suspicions. But when Sidious first appeared on screen and the Emperor's theme played, I knew. Then of course the hints in the movie pretty much spilled the beans. I certainly knew walking out of the theater.

I remember how worried I was walking in thinking this could be an entirely new villain. [face_laugh]

I guess I somehow knew Sidious would become the Emperor, but I didn't figure out that he was actually the same guy as Palpatine. I guess I somehow figured that Sidious would use some weird dark-side power to take over Palpatine's body and then take over the Republic that way. It wasn't until later that I thought about it some more and realized they were probably just the same person to begin with.

At Qui-Gon's funeral scene. Remember the close up shot of Palpatine just after Mace asked Yoda which was destroyed, the Sith master or the apprentice?
