Hi, I'm a novice Star Wars fan, and I've been lurking for a year or so here.

    This is my first post:

When did the name Palpatine surface? Was it during Episode I or before?

Even though in VI, they refer to him only as "The Emperor" was his last name known then?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Palpatine's name has always been Palpatine first Senator Palpatine then Supreme Chancellor Palpatine Then Emperor Palpatine. Sidious is just his Sith Name. Palpatine's name didn't come out of the shadows until episde 1 but it was there.

They call him Palpatine in the ROTJ novel, for what it's worth.

    Rick McCallum loves you!

I also think they called him Palpatine in ESB novel. The first time we actually hear a person call Palpatine, Palpatine would have to be from Episode I

He was called Palaptine ever since the ANH novelization, which came out in December 1976.

Lucas made a homage to "Taxi Driver" (1976); in which the senator's name is Palantine. So the name Palpatine has always been there, altough it wasn't spoken of in movies until TPM.

The name Palpatine was in the ANH novel prologue - apparently the only part actually written by Lucas.

Not said on screen until TPM but has always been used for the Emperor on other merchandise.

Gunnehill: thats right. Palantine. Somehow funny!

I think it was first used in Timothy Zahns Heirs of the Empire. Or in the RPG source book of west end games.

The name Palpatine was in the ANH novel, which means the name has been around since before May of 1977. It wasn't spoken on screen until Episode I. I believe Zahn was the one who came up with the name Coruscant.
