I'm trying to get my timeline straight for some fan fiction. Any thoughts on when Thrawn was exiled? "Lesser Evil" takes place in 18 BBY. "Thrawn" starts in 16 BBY (per Wookeepedia). If he was only there for a few months.... I was really hoping that "Lesser Evil" would solve it for me. I guess not." Otherwise, I appreciated that Zahn tied up a lot of loose ends.
Hrm, I was wondering about this myself. I was expecting to see him exiled by the end of Outbound Flight, but that didn't happen. Edit: oh wait, this thread is about canon Thrawn...
Pretty sure the novel Thrawn starts in 19BBY, with its first three chapters a remix/expansion of Zahn's Legends short story "Mist Encounter" about imperial Voss Parck discovering Thrawn in exile shortly after news of the New Order had reached the Outer Rim. Thrawn chapters 5-6 take place about three months later, chapter seven takes place 21 months later, and then the rest of the book gradually works its way down in fits and starts to 2BBY. Wookieepedia dates chapter 19 to 12BBY, based on the removed of Ryder Azadi as governor of Lothal when Ezra Bridger was seven years old, but I don't know why they conclude that chapter 19 is about four years after the start of the book. Maybe I missed something. Granted, in Canon Zahn has shifted Thrawn's timeline a bit (e.g. moving Outbound Flight closer to AOTC in Thrawn: Ascendancy: Chaos Rising), but I'm not sure he did that here.
well in one of the earlier chapters of lesser evil, they referred to the encounter he had with Anakin as a just few months back, and then in the last chapter, ba'kif said that the clone war ended and now a newly built empire per the neimoidians, so I'm guessing it all happened shortly within those first few months of the empire's beginning timeline. i don't think he was really there for a few months as ba'kif & thrawn had planned at the end of lesser evil. especially from how long his hair was, he had to have been travelling to different uninhabited planets for those two years until the start of the first (canon) thrawn book. i dunno if that helps! but that's how i translated it.
