Beyond - Legends When Words Fail (action/romance/intrigue) [updated: 07/05/07]

Well, here is the long promised, if not long awaited, sequel to Smuggler's Incorporation! Oh, but don't lose hope if you don't want to read the first one, this one can stand alone.

Title: When Words Fail

Diophik Ders rolled out of bed, yawning. He glanced over at the woman sleeping on the other side of the bed and smiled; Shasa wouldn?t be awake for at least another hour unless he woke her himself.

Stretching, he tried to remember exactly why he wasn?t still in bed with his wife---ah yes; he was supposed to be meditating.

Great.

Diophik yawned again, and walked slowly out onto their balcony. The view was breathtaking, the Yavin forest stretched as far as the eye could see. Diophik searched around a moment until he found the meditating mats, and sat down. Letting himself relax slowly into the Force, he opened his mind.

Shasa moaned softly in her sleep and reached over to where Diophik should?ve been. When she couldn?t find him, her eyes snapped open and she woke up.

Sitting up in bed, Shasa glanced around the room. The door to the balcony was open, letting in a warm and crisp early morning breeze. She climbed out of bed, and walking to the open double doors, she looked out. Diophik was sitting cross-legged on a mat, meditating.

Loath to disturb him, Shasa tip-toed off to the kitchen to get breakfast made. She past a mirror on her way to the kitchen and sighed---she had better get dressed first.

Walking back into the bedroom, she was just in time to see Diophik walk in from the balcony. He looked surprised to see her. ?You?re up early.?

Shasa smiled and walked over to him. ?I don?t think I know how to sleep without you anymore.?

?Sorry about that, Master Skywalker said I should get more meditating time in.?

Shasa wrapped her arms around his neck and pulling his head down, kissing him. Diophik kissed back, and then let her go. ?I should get dressed...?

Shasa hugged him for a minute, and then walked back towards the closet. ?So should I.?

Once Shasa had gotten into her Jedi tunic, she went into the kitchen to get breakfast. Diophik was already there when she walked in, and he handed her a sandwich. ?Eat; we have to be in classes in ten minutes.?

Shasa glanced at the wall chrono that hung above the stove. ?Krif, I forgot about that.?

Today was Shasa?s first day of teaching the apprentices and she wasn?t exactly looking forward to it.

Once she had finished stuffing the sandwich in, Shasa pulled on her cloak, and walked with Diophik to the turbolifts. Shasa reached out and punched the button and the doors slid open. Kissing Diophik goodbye, she stepped in.

Diophik watched the doors close, and smiled. Shasa was going to have her hands full---he was glad her friend, Healer Westler, was teaching with her.

Shasa walked into the classroom, and walked up to the front where Lyla Westler was waiting. Tossing her green-streaked blonde hair over her shoulder, Lyla smiled at Shasa. ?You look happy.?

Shasa rolled her eyes. ?My husband likes to get up early.?

Lyla laughed. ?Well I?m glad he does, now you?re early and you can help me set up.?

Shasa looked around the small room. ?So what are we teaching them today??

Lyla handed her a small box. ?Can you put those in the closet? Somewhere up high so the kids can?t get at them.? The half-human checked her clipboard again. ?There going to learn to use their telekinetic abilities.?

Shasa set the box on the top shelf and turned back to Lyla. ?So how do we do that??

Lyla smiled at her. ?Watch and be amazed.?

Shasa rolled her eyes, and was about to retort, when the door hissed open and a small Twi?lek girl in Jedi robes walked in. She smiled shyly at them. ?Hello...my name?s Verila.?

Shasa picked up the attendance clipboard and put a check by the name: Verila Fren. She smiled at the girl. ?Pleased to meet you, I?m Jedi Ders, and this is Healer Westler.?

When Diophik and Shasa entered, they were immediately accosted by Verila. ?Jedi Ders!? Said the little Twi?lek girl running up to them. ?Guess what! I levitated a pebble again!?

Shasa hugged the little girl, spinning her around. ?Good for you!?

She set Verila on her feet, and took Diophik?s hand. Verila looked up at Diophik. ?Are you her husband??

Diophik nodded, chuckling. ?I am, and who are you??

Verila raised herself up to her entire two and half feet. ?I am her [/i]student[/i].?

Diophik started laughing, and Verila couldn?t hold her laughter in. Jedi Fren, Verila?s father, walked over, scolding her playfully. ?Verila Fren, you know better than to run away like that!?

Verila, still giggling madly, tried to look at her father seriously---and failed miserably. ?Yes---hic---Daddy.?

Jedi Fren smiled down at her, and then looked up at the people beside her. ?Hello, I?m Verila?s father, Stev Fren.?

Diophik shook his hand. ?Hello, Stev, Diophik Ders. I believe I teach your son, Teg Fren??

At the name, Stev?s face sobered. He glanced down at Verila. ?Go find your mother, V?ila.?

Verila nodded, looking slightly puzzled. ?Yes, Daddy.?

Once the girl had left, Stev gestured them to a table. ?Sit down, this might take some explaining.?

Confused, Shasa and Diophik sat down opposite to Stev. He gave them a tired smile. ?Teg is our son, but he won?t admit it.?

Shock rode over Shasa?s face. ?What do you mean??

Stev?s head tail twitched. ?Teg is an anti-cross-species follower.?

Diophik shook his head. ?A what??

?Someone opposed to the ?cross-breeding? of humans and aliens.? Stev dug into his robes and tossed them a flimsiplast sheet. ?Teg, and others like him, believe that we shouldn?t let a human and an alien get married or have offspring. That sheet is the pamphlet they pass around to try and get more followers.?

Diophik opened the sheet. In it where horrible pictures of the result of some nasty cross breeding problems. One was of a baby born with two heads, and another depicted a poor baby that was born in pieces.

Shasa shook her head, horrified. ?But these are special cases! Lyla is a cross-breed and she?s gorgeous!?

Stev made a quieting gesture, glancing around the large room. ?Shh, keep it down; you don?t want these people to know that.?

?What do you mean? Aren?t they just trying to warn people??

Stev gave a snort of disgust. ?That?s the thing, they hate cross-breeds. They harass the parents, and sometimes even killed the offspring.?

There was a startled silence, and then Diophik let out a whistle. ?And Master Skywalker allows this here??

Stev snorted. ?Well, obviously they don?t do it here, and, as you noticed, they don?t exactly advertise it in their pamphlet.?

Diophik?s fist clenched in anger. ?That?s horrible! Hasn?t anybody tried to stop them??

Stev shrugged uncomfortably. ?Their headquarters are secret; we have no idea where they are, and they?re always masked too, so we don?t even know who they are.?

Shasa raised an eyebrow. ?But you just said Teg was one.?

Stev stood up and pointed a finger at Shasa. ?If you think I would kill my own son, you are greatly mistaken!?

Shasa raised both hands. ?Wow, calm down! I didn?t mean you should kill him! I?m just saying you should report him, or at least bring him to Master Skywalker.?

Stev nodded, sitting back down---he looked very tired. ?I know.? He said quietly. ?I haven?t done it sooner because of my wife.?

Shasa took a deep breath then let it out. ?Well, thank you for clearing that up for us, Stev. I hope you reach a decision soon.? Standing up, she took Diophik?s hand, and pulled him to his feet. ?Let?s go find a table.?

Diophik took her hand and pulled her to her feet. ?Sulya Gren?ly, she had Jedi training before she came here, but she was afraid that it was tainted with the Dark Side and decided to start at the bottom again. If you ask me that takes a lot of courage.?
Shasa went up on her tip-toes and kissed his cheek. ?That does. I wonder---never mind.?
Diophik glanced down at her. ?What??



Good post I'm loving the new characters and I can't wait to see what's going on with the old gang.

That's a very strange conclusion to jump to for something like this

Shasa laughed and laid her head on his chest, her arm wrapped tightly around him. ?I think you?d probably have to worry more about Siyra being a horrible daughter than Wrelinka being a horrible wife.?

Shasa grinned at him. ?Yeah, we?ve been busy. I?ve started teaching! I?m officially a Jedi Knight now.?

Diophik pulled her back against him. ?Yes.?
Shasa lay on him, perfectly at peace. ?I love you.?

Haha. Sorry to be late for class Eruanne.

Your first two chapters seem to display a good amount of two properties; mystery in the making and cute newlyweded dialogue. We definitely seem to have found our protaganists in a far calmer state then seems normal for the GFFA (even with all of this anti-crossbreed stuff going on), but can this last or will it be the proverbial calm before the storm? At any rate wedded life seems to suit Shasa and Diophik quite well, if the scene in the fisrt chapter is any indication, not to mention Treyer and Wrelinka's relationship. Does she still have her old job as aide to the chief of state?

Your new characters such as Verila (her last name reminds me of Fenn, another Twi'lek surname. Related possibly?) her father Stev and Healer Westler (A Firrero? Caught me off guard too.) seem to have the proper amount of gravitas and intrigue nessecary to keep a reader's attention. Or at least Lyla and Stev do. And also the Bothan girl, who I have a feeling will pop up again. She seems to have reminded Shasa of something from her own past, but perhaps secrets can be revealed later. Anyway Verila is just too cute. (Nothing wrong with that.)

Shasa turned around so she was facing him, and looked into his face. ?Diophik?do you want children??

The question caught Diophik completely off guard. He stared at Shasa for a moment. ?What?? Was all he could think of to say.

Shasa shrugged and laid her head on his shoulder. ?Never mind.?

Diophik pushed her up so he could look at her. ?Children??

Shasa nodded, but said nothing.

Diophik pulled her back against him. ?Yes.?

Shasa lay on him, perfectly at peace. ?I love you.?

Go for it you two. The GFFA needs bigger families. And nice Mara cameo earlier there too.

I'll try and see if I can provide a more concise review later, but these parts stood out among the rest to me. Keep up the good work.

I could never teach young kids; they?re so easily punt-able.

I think I?m starting to catch on to who everyone is. Everything seems very peaceful, but with this trouble brewing, you can feel the floor about to drop out from under them.

Indeed, as one of six kids in my family, I always tend to make my characters have large families....

Siyra got out of bed, yawning as she padded out to the kitchen, hoping her parents were already up and making breakfast. She wasn?t disappointed. Her dad was leaning on the counter, drinking his stim-caf and watching her mom make sausages. He smiled at Siyra as she walked in. ?Hey, sweetie. How was your night??

Treyer scooped Siyra up into his arms as she answered, her little five-year-old mind still half asleep. ?Good??

Kissing her on the cheek, Treyer turned to show Siyra their breakfast. ?See? Your mommy made sausages and toast.?

Siyra leaned over and smooched Wrelinka?s cheek. ?Hi mommy.?

Wrelinka turned and kissed Siyra back. ?Hi baby.?

?What?s we going to do today??

Treyer sat Siyra on the counter. ?Well, mommy?s got a meeting with the President, and then we were thinking of taking you to the new museum on Gurse Street.?

Siyra clapped her hands together, her face shinning. ?Really? Oh boy!? She tapped Wrelinka on the arm. ?You hear dat? We?s going to a museem!?

Wrelinka set the sausages and toast on the table. ?I?ll get the ploom juice, you guys get started.?

Siyra plonked down in her seat and held out her plate. ?I wanna piece o? toast, please.?

Treyer dished her breakfast, and she fell to eating it with gusto. Standing up, Treyer walked back into the kitchen and found Wrelinka talking into her comlink. He walked up behind her, and wrapped his strong arms around her waist. She gave no sign that she knew he was there other than leaning slightly into his embrace. ?No.? She was saying. ?They can?t do that! I?ll be there in a minute...no, that?s alright, I?m not busy...alright Leia, I?ll be there as soon as I can.?

Wrelinka hung up and slipped her com back into its pouch. Treyer snorted. ?Not busy, eh??

Pulling out of his arms, Wrelinka scooped up the ploom juice and handed it to him. ?I want you to take Siyra to the museum like we had planned; I doubt I?ll be back by then.?

Treyer set the juice on the counter and grabbed her by the shoulders. ?Wrelinka, what?s going on??

She started to pull against him and then stopped, a tired look on her face. ?The press has gotten an interview with on of the head honchos of the ACSA and their trying to put it on air; Councilor Organa Solo wants me to look it over for any clues and also to make sure it doesn?t go against their agreement.?

Treyer kissed her. ?You be careful, I doubt the ACSA will take kindly to you poking into their affairs.?

Wrelinka gave him a wry grin. ?I think by now I?ve done a bit more then just poking, dear.?

Letting her go, Treyer went back to the dining room table. Siyra looked up into his brown eyes, her blue eyes filled with concern. ?What?s wrong, Daddy??

Treyer chucked her lightly under the chin. ?Nothin?, baby---eat so we can go to the museum.?

Siyra spoke around her mouthful of sausage. ?Is Mummy comin? wis us??

Treyer shook his head, standing up. ?Nope, she?s got an important meeting.?

The little girl seemed to digest this for a minute, then she grinned. ?Is dat ?cause she?s a ?portant person??

Treyer smiled. ?Yeah, that?s why...?

Hopping off her seat, Siyra ran to kiss her Mummy goodbye. Once back, her Daddy cleaned her off and then took her to get changed.

A few minutes later, dressed in her light blue jumpsuit and white boots, Siyra put on her jacket and waited for her daddy to come out of his room, so he could take her to the museum.

Treyer walked out of his and Wrelinka?s room, and watched as Siyra struggled with her white jacket?s zipper. Deciding it was time he helped her, he walked into the entry and knelt down in front of her. ?You want some help??

Siyra nodded, her bottom lip stuck out. ?I didn?t be able to do it myself.?

Treyer zipped it up, and scooped her up into his arms. ?Let?s go to a museum, shall we??

Yeah, I quit teaching swimming lessons for that exact reason. Stupid little kids....don't get me wrong, I LOVE little kids, I just don't like teaching them if I don't know them really well.

Wrelinka pushed her way through the crowd leaving the conference room. Spotting Senator Virt, she called, ?Senator, wait.?

Virt turned elegantly on his heel, and set his cold blue eyes on her face. ?Yes, Aide Priov Hinther??

Wrelinka hated that all the officials called her Priov Hinther, rather than just Hinther, but this was not the time to talk about it. ?Senator I must protest your handling of this serious issue.?

The Senator set his hand in the small of her back, and gave her a gentle push, indicating that she should walk. ?Let?s speak of this in my office, Aide Priov Hinther.?

Wrelinka nodded to show that she concurred, and Virt lead her into another part of the building and into a lavish office. He sat down on a comfy armchair, and indicated that she sit in the one opposite. Letting his hands rest in his lap, the Twi?lek Senator gave Wrelinka a polite smile. ?You don?t like my take on this case, Aide Priov Hinther??

Wrelinka shook her head. ?No, the public should be told of this, ignorance is not a safe house.?

Senator Virt cocked an eyebrow. ?Others would say ignorance is bliss. You have given me your thoughts, but ideas do not make stepping stones, give me a good reason to tell the public to jump at shadows.?

Wrelinka sipped at the cup of tea that was placed before her, it was watery, but refreshing. ?When someone is in danger do you just sit there, or do you call out to them, saying, ?there?s someone behind you???

The twi?lek drank from his teacup for a moment, then said, ?Do you not think that making the public aware of the gravity of the situation would only cause mass panic??

?All they now is that ?some people have died?, they have no idea of the seriousness of the situation. There have been three killings in the last week, and yet, our planet is not getting mobilized. Why? Because the Senate has decided to keep this secret.?

Senator Virt?s face dipped into a frown. ?You do not realize what you are saying, Aide Priov Hinther, if the populace found out about this deepness of this case, they would say we weren?t taking action. We can?t take action until we?ve found the leaders.?

Wrelinka was getting more and more frustrated by the second. ?Then strike out! Investigate, make moves! You are not going to find the leaders until you try, Senator.?

Senator Virt stiffened. ?We have to look on the political side of things, Aide; it would make the government look terrible if we arrested the wrong people.? He looked up at the wall-chrono. ?I?m afraid our chat must come to an end, Aide Priov Hinther, it was interesting to hear your views.?

Wrelinka was fuming as she stepped from the Twi?lek Senator?s office. Pulling out her itinerary she looked it over, and sighed with relief. She was done for the day.

She glanced at a wall-chrono as she passed by and noticed that it was only 1500 hours. She turned another corner and took a turbo-lift the bottom floor, hoping to catch Treyer and Siyra in the museum. She had only just stepped out onto the busy streets, when a strange looking humanoid walked up to her and sketched a small bow. ?Are you Administrative Aide Priov Hinther??

Wrelinka nodded once. ?Yes, and you are??

The male humanoid gave her a slight smile. ?I would prefer to remain unknown, Aide Priov Hinther. We would just like commend you on your work with the our hideous case, it gives us all hope to have your voice against it in the Senate,? He took out a tiny round crystal with holo-projector implanted in the center, it was a holo of Wrelinka and Treyer and Siyra at Treyer and Wrelinka?s wedding. ?We would?ve liked to give you a picture of us, but, as you know, if we are revealed it would mean a sudden and horrible death from the ACSA.?

Okay, at three in a row, he?s calling her that just to push her buttons.

Shasa nodded, and collapsed into his arms. ?Why do people dream? It seems like such a stupid thing to do.?

I just really liked that line, and thought it worth noting. So there.

She broke off as a piercing Force scream ripped through her mind. She clamped her head in her hands and screamed as the pain echoed through her brain. She vaguely heard her class scream and then there was nothing.

*rubs hands together* Now we?re getting somewhere!

She broke off as a piercing Force scream ripped through her mind. She clamped her head in her hands and screamed as the pain echoed through her brain. She vaguely heard her class scream and then there was nothing.

Well, I guess Lyla is dead That didn't take long.

Okay...so this isn't exactly Tuesday but it wishes it could be! Sorry about the laxness....soooo lazy....*shame*

Treyer heard a small yawn from above him and smiled. ?You tired up there??

Sirya smiled down at him from his shoulders. ?Yush?I?s sleepy?? She yawned.

Wrelinka tugged her left foot from her place walking beside Treyer. ?Well, the moment we get home we?ll put you in bed, how?s that sound??

Treyer opened the door to leave the museum and stepped out into the crisp evening air and walked towards a dark green landspeeder that was the Hinther?s only vehicle. Wrelinka didn?t like driving on Coruscant, so she always took a taxi and therefore there was no need for them to have more than one ?speeder.

Treyer opened the back seat door and set Siyra down and buckled her in. He rose and walked around to his door and was about to get in when his com beeped. He sat down in his seat and pulled it out, flicking it on as he did so. ?Hinther.?

?Mr. Hinther,? A strange voice spoke, ?You do not know me, but I have someone you do. If you do not agree with my terms your Jedi friend will not live another day.?

Treyer?s heart leapt into his throat, but he managed to reply. ?Which Jedi??

?Your old captain, Shasa Feelon Ders.?

He glanced at Wrelinka who was looking at him in concern and motioned for her to pick up her comlink and get on the line. ?What are the terms??

?One, your wife will start fighting for the ACSA?s cause; two, you will get a list of the names of all the half-breeds on Coruscant; and three, you will mention nothing of this to anyone.?

Treyer was beginning to panic, what was he supposed to do? Risk Shasa?s life over a bunch of people he didn?t even know? But Wrelinka made the choice for him. Using her best Senate voice she spoke coldly to the being on the other side. ?You have three more seconds before my men track this line to its source---it?s your choice, get off now or be tracked.?

The man on the other end swore and hung up. Wrelinka flicked her com off and looked at Treyer, tears in her eyes. ?What are we going to do??

Treyer was already starting up the landspeeder. ?We?re going to take a trip to Yavin 4.? He nodded to her. ?Get on the com to Diophik and tell him to find Shasa right NOW.?

Wrelinka quickly obeyed, she had only seen Treyer look this determined a few times before, and she wasn?t about to argue with him. ?Diophik??

?Wrelinka? Say, can I call you back, I?m in the middle of a meeting---?

Wrelinka interrupted him. ?Find Shasa NOW, she might be in major danger.?

There was a silence then Diophik?s voice came back, sounding confused and terrified. ?What? How would you??

Wrelinka lost her temper. ?Diophik! Find your wife this INSTANT---and make sure she doesn?t leave your side until we get there, do you understand me??

Diophik finally caught on to the seriousness and Wrelinka could hear him getting up and speaking quietly to whoever he was meeting with. He got back on the com. ?I?m going to find her now; I?ll call you when I have her.?

Wrelinka hung up and put her face in her hands. ?I hope she?s alright??

Shasa woke slowly, just as Diophik arrived in her classroom. He ran over to her and pulled her into his arms. ?Shasa! Are you alright??

She nodded slowly. ?I?m fine now, but?? She shuddered. ?It was horrible.?

She got slowly to her feet and looked around at the small children, staring at her in horrified silence. She smiled. ?I?m alright now, but I want you all to get on your coms and call your parents to come and pick you up, okay??

There was a hustle and soon the parents began arriving---the nicer ones telling Shasa that they hoped she would feel better soon, while the others just eyed her suspiciously.

Once they had all left, Shasa followed Diophik out of the classroom, and back to their apartment. Lyla was already there, and she thrust a mug of tea at Shasa as Diophik guided her to the hover-couch. Shasa sipped at it and made a face. ?Yuck, what is this? Sewer??

Things are getting dire, and it looks like our Coruscant crew and Yavin group will be coming together, which is nice. Shame the circumstances it took for that to happen.

The Apocalypse? Now that's quite a ship name. Sounds kind of like a Star Destroyer.

Wonder how they got to her, and how they plan to do it again? Nice post, Dorothea.

Good post. I doubt Wrenlinka will give into their demands no matter what they do, but it will be interesting to see how they deal with it all

Yeah well, I didn't name it. It was Wrelinka's ship in Smuggler's Inc and Sarah(my co-writer) named it.
