We all love the classic trash compactor scene in Episode IV but one thing bothers me. Where does the dianoga go when the trash is compacted and blasted into space? Is there a designed cubby hole specifically for dianogas or is it somehow smart enough to find a way out before being squished to death?
Given that the compactor is half-full of fluid - I would guess that there is a pipe somewhere where the fluid is supposed to go - and the dianoga was hiding in that. I believe there's EU sources that say the Empire wants dianogas in their compactors- to eat the things that can be eaten - so it may be designed that way - to have a safe hiding place for them.
The EU tends to name a lot of things. Sometimes in novelizations, sometimes in background books. Apparently in the Revised Fourth Draft of ANH, the creature was called a "Dia Nogu": http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dianoga
The recent Death Star Manual says Because dianogas can consume vast quantities of garbage, the Death Star's service sector not only tolerates their presence, but actually breeds them for use in the compactors.. (Pg 101, US edition).
In real life, cephalopods like octopuses can squeeze through very tiny spaces, if I recall. Probably the dianoga just retreated to some small crevice where it wouldn't get smashed.
The way I saw it, the Dianoga sensed the danger with the first rumbles of the mechanism, and immediately knew to get out of there.
True. Its like looking at the Sarlacc's entire body in the Visual Dictionary. I never like staring at it.
The level in Shadows of the Empire where you fight a giant dianoga in the sewers scared the wits out of me every time I played it. And don't get me started on Anoat in Dark Forces.
It doesn't really matter since it died when the Death Star blew up. But yeah i was 7 when i first played Sote and i would shut the game off when i got to That boss.
