Okay, I just finished my first Star Wars books, the Thrawn Trilogy, a few weeks ago.
Curious for more, I was shocked and dismayed at the vast selection of books available without a clue where to start!

What I'm particularly curious about are books that (in chronological order of course), expand on the relationship between Mara Jade & Luke before the New Jedi Order books.
    So, where do I start?

Well, if you want to focus solely on them, try the Hand of Thrawn duology, the sequel series to the trilogy you just read.

If you want to flesh out the rest of the Star Wars (Bantam published) universe, I suggest you start with Truce at Bakura and work you way, chronologically from there.

cheak out the timeline option located at the top and bottom of your screen, in this forum, to see how both comics and books fit timewise.

if you just want to sample several authors at once cheak out all the anthologies available...

    tales of mos eisley
    tales of the bounty hunters
    tales of jabbas palace
    tales of the empire
    tales of the new republic

these are short stories by writers who have given novels to the sw eu. it will give you a glimpse at various writing styles.

Two schools of thought exist on this topic. I prefer going chronologically according to events in the GFFA and starting w/ Truce at Bakura, going from there to the NJO. Others think that going by Earthly release date it best.

As for Luke and Mara, read the Jedi Academy Trilogy, I,Jedi, and the Hand of Thrawn duology for sure.

If you want to read about the expansion of Luke and Mara's relationship, read the Hand of Thrawn duology (Spectre of the Past and Vision of the Future), followed by the comic series "Union". HOWEVER, be warned that Hand of Thrawn and Union take place more than 15 years after the Thrawn Trilogy and just prior to NJO, so there are alot of major events between the two, although they are tied together heavily.

Beyond that option, you have a couple others...

    1) Jump back to the books between ROTJ and The Thrawn Trilogy:

    -The Truce at Bakura
-X-Wing series 1 [Rogue Squadron, Wedge's Gamble, The Krytos Trap, The Bacta War]
-X-Wing series 2 [Wraith Squadron, Iron Fist, Solo Command]
    -The Courtship of Princess Leia.

    2) Proceed to the major stories after TTT

    3) Do option 1 and flow into option 2.

The major post-TTT stories would be:

-X-Wing: Isard's Revenge (although I wouldn't read this if you haven't read the previous X-Wing novels)
-Dark Empire trilogy (a comic series, availble in graphic novel form, composed of "Dark Empire", "Dark Empire ][" and "Empire's End".)
-The Jedi Academy Trilogy [Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice, Champions of the Force]
-I, Jedi (starts just prior to the JAT, but retells its events from a different perspective, and then ends shortly after, but should be read after reading the original trilogy)
    -Children of the Jedi
    -Darksaber
    -Planet of Twilight
    -X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar
-Black Fleet Crisis trilogy [Before the Storm, Shield of Lies, Tyrant's Tes]
-Corellian Trilogy [Ambush at Corellia, Assault at Selonia, Showdown at Centerpoint]
-Hand of Thrawn Duology [Spectre of the Past, Vision of the Future]

well i suggest the Jedi Acadamy Trilogy. good set of books. then go to I, Jedi. this focuses on Corran Horn, IMHO the best jedi of the post-OT. it also goes into the JAT a bit. my favorite book is I, Jedi.

but after that i suggest Dark Empire. i havent read it, but its where anakin is born, i think.
then the Hand of Thrawn duology.
then try the Young Jedi Knights. it gets you familiar with the Solo twins and their posse(i like saying that).
    then Start the NJO.

IMO, I would not read I, Jedi until I had read the first four X-Wing books where Corran is first introduced. SO....

    After Thrawn trilogy:

    Jedi Academy Tril.
    Stackpole's X-Wing books
    I, Jedi.
    HoT duology
then fill in the voids where you are most interested until you get to the NJO

I haven't yet read i jedi (is that a good one?) but after i read TTT i read a couple of other books but really liked the x-wing series books. The HoT duology is also really good. (Zahn introduced Mara and from what I've read, he is the best writer with her)

I wouldn't read jedi academy before reading Dark Empire, there are several things that occur in DE that are referenced in JAT (Emperor Reborn, Luke's fall to the darkside, the state of coruscant, Anakin's birth), reading DE (the first one at least) first would reduce any confusion.

And yes, I Jedi is very good.

I actually have read Dark Empire and am quite disapointed that all the crap that happens in those comic books is imposed on the authors from that point on.

Oh well, can't win 'em all.

I think I'll go with the semi-Chronological route starting with the Jedi Academy Trilogy. If I have time I can go back and fill in any blanks I miss.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I'm placing my Amazon order right now.
