I've heard numerous times that Gotham is supposed to be in Northern New Jersey. Which is cool cause thats where I am from :D Though I am not exactly sure thats where it is. I've also heard that its in Maryland.

Now where is Metropolis? I've heard that its in New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Maryland. Can Any DC fans tell me about this?

I know both cities were molded after New York. And Early Metropolis was molded after Toronto and Clevland. But where in the current DC Comics continuity are these cities supposed to be?

    You watch SmallVille right?

Metropolis is THE Metro City near SmallVille!

    Kansas!

Both are basically rip-offs of New York City.

Gotham city is another name for NYC, and Metropolis is fictional.

I was actually thinking about this same question the other day.

I don't believe they are really supposed to be in any specific part of the country. They're like Springfield on The Simpsons. The same goes for Coast City and Keystone City and all those made-up cities in the DCU. At least I think so...

DC makes up their cities sometimes. Gotham is DC's version of NYC. I don't think "New York City" has ever been mentioned in a DC comic. I could be wrong, though.

Metropolis was originally supposed to be Detroit-like city. Gotham is supposed to be NYC. There is actually a Statue of Liberty like statue at NYC's harbor.

Ya, in the case of Smallville, Metropolis seems to be in Kansas because they can see it from Smallville.

I always thought Gotham was NYC, and Metropolis Chicago.

I always thought they were just made up, and never worried about it. But I did worry about howcome Superman or Batman never visited the fictional town of Spleenville which was inhabited by people with abnormal bladders.

Again, to my knowledge, Gotham = DC's version of NYC

Gotham also has its own version of Lady Liberty--Lady Gotham.

Well New York City has been mentioned in DC comics and Batman and Superman have actually been there a few times. While the cities are made up and based on other real cities they are supposed to be located in real states. Example: Smallville, Kansas.

And well as I was making this thread I happened to find the answer.

According to the DC ATLAS compiled by Mayfair Games for the DC HEROES game it places both Metropolis and Gotham as cities in New Jersey. This placement was comfirmed in the recent DC UNIVERSE game from the late West End Games. Well for a Jersey boy like myself I find that to be really cool.

JM22, I'm talking about comic continuity not the Smallville tv show.

Both are located within Batman and Superman comic books. Thank you, that is all.

Estranged, it's all Fictional, but I will say SmallVille is a very good show it brings NO shame like "Birds Of Prey" did.

They will probably goto Metropolis on the show next seasons, and I can't wait to see the TV version of it :)

That is pretty cool, actually (I live in New Jersey as well)... though I can't help but be a little disturbed that NJ, in the DC universe, has not one but two cities infested with crime and supervillians and natural disasters. Every time I watch Batman, I find myself thinking, "Damn--I'm glad I don't live in Gotham." :)

But then again, at least DC's New Jersey is still better off than Marvel's NYC. ;)

Come on! Marvel's NYC has to be the best place to live!

Sure, there are the falling Galactus' concerns and the buildings full of Spider-Man's old webs, but it would be cool to have Thor's autograph!

Gotham City is based on New York.
    Metropolis is based on Detroit.
I read that somewhere, can't remember where.

Gotham is New York, according to a lot of hints over the years. Metropolis is Toronto, according to Superman?s creator.

Joe Shuster was a Canadian and the creator of Superman, as shown in endless ?A Part of Our Heritage? commercials. He?d been a paper boy for a newspaper, the Daily Star, which became the Daily Planet in Superman and whose name changed to the Toronto Star in real life. The buildings of early Metropolis were unusually also to be found in Toronto.

Yeah I was going to say that Metropolis is in Kansas and blah blah blah but someone already said that already. *sighs* Sometimes, I think I watch too much Smallville.

This thread also raises the question: where is Bludhaven?
