CT Where to find star wars in the German language?

I'm in the uk and am looking to find the CT in german. Would an import through Amazon or so be the way to do it?

Yes, the German Amazon has the German versions of the OT. You have the choice between German and English audio tracks plus subtitles. I'm pretty sure the opening crawl will be in German only even if you switch to English audio, as that is the case with Episode III. Check this page if you want to order:

I just realised how fantastic it would be to hear the Imperials talking in German! That would be something...

 

I've youtubed clips and it does fit. I'm mostly after the German edition as an enjoyable way to practice German listening.

It's much less impressive than you may think. I remember Vader's voice in ANH in German, it is WAY less intimidating and much higher then Jones'. And dubbed German movies in general are notorious for translation errors. I know since I grew up with them. I heard the PT is even worse than the OT, even as far as some characters' voices not being consistent throughout the trilogy. Still, one line of Han Solo in ANH comes to mind, which is crucial in demonstrating his confidence as well as the Falcon's capabilities, which was simply omitted in the German version: Han: "Easy? You call that easy?.....BLANK....not this ship sister!". His lines were translated correctly but unfortunately Leia's "they are tracking us" is missing, destroying the whole purpose of this little dialog. Maybe they fixed that in later versions, but that's all we had at least until the SE in the late 90s. Also in AOTC Cliegg Lars says "I can't ride A HORSE anymore until I heal", the problem being the completely misunderstood sense of the English word "to ride". Give it a try but I'm pretty sure you will be glad to go back to watching those movies in the original versions again.

I take it you have some or near native in German. Do you prefer any particular version?

 

Well, it is my native language. As to preferred version, it's always the original one for me, when available, regardless of which language that might be. If it's one I don't speak myself I would rather read subtitles than hear the actors speak in a random voice not their own. Movies dubbed in German often contain a lot of "gibberish" along with translation errors, as translators keep mixing up English words with proper German as well as nonexistent made-up words or phrases that are neither proper English nor German, the result being more confusion than clarity. If a movie is in English I will always choose to watch it in that version, in some cases (like low quality audio etc.) with English subtitles. If it's a language I have some knowledge of even if it's not fluent I'd still want to hear that language plus subtitles in the same language. Only in cases where I have zero knowledge will I choose subtitles in English or German, but still with audio switched to whatever language that movie was made in.
