I need help confirming some things from somebody who considers themselves a Thrawn, or Zahn officianado.

Okay first, am I correct in thinking that during the events of Return of the Jedi Thrawn was leading an Imperial task force exploring the Unknown Regions, and thus oblivious to what was happening with the Empire and the Rebels?

Also when did he leave the galaxy proper for that expedition?

And was Palleon part of it, or did they meet after Thrawn returned?

I think Pellaeon was at Endor while Thrawn was in the Unknown Regions.

Yeah That's what I thought too Alderaan_. Just wanted to doublecheck it.

this is actually a bit of research for my (our) fanfiction idea. I've been surprised that you haven't checked it out, buddy, considering it was initially your baby. Oh well, no pressure, I suppose you've been busy elsewhere.

Pellaeon was at Endor as the second in Command of the Chimaera. During the battle the Captain died and Pellaeon took over as would be the pattern throughout his career.

Pellaeon participated in the battle of Endor, and took over the Chimera after it's commander died in the battle. 4 years after ROTJ, when Thrawn returned from the Unknown Regions, he chose the Chimera as his flagship, and Pellaeon as his second-in-command.

    Thanks for your knowledge guys.

So Palleon was the second in command until the battle of endor, where he took over command of the Chimaera?
    Dang it!

And I was trying to keep my fanfic as close as possible to the established continuity, Oh well, can't be fixed now, :(

What about my question concerning when Thrawn left on his exploring mission?

During the time of the Battle of Endor Grand Admiral Thrawn had just finished his mission to kill the treasonous Grand Admiral Zaarin in the Outer Rim. After this I assume he returned to the Unknown Regions.

It was some years before ANH, though I'm not exactly sure on dates.

I just need an overview of the timing, I'm planning of introducing him way early in my fanfic than he was introduced in the established continuity so i wanted to be as precise as possible about when I could break from the original timeline.

Apparently I've already made one flub with Palleon, :(

And I'm going to have to make a blatant and obvious one with Xizor, so I wanted to be careful with Thrawn and the established continuity.

Thrawn was getting Zaarin around the time of RotJ? hmm, interesting, tell me more about this, please.

Okay, Zaarin was a Grand admiral who betrayed the Empire a few months after the Battle of Hoth. He captured the Emperor at was going to have him executed. However Darth Vader and Maarek Stele (one of the Emperor's Hands) were able to save Palpatine. Zaarin however escaped. Zaarin, who had a small fleet that was loyal to him, started to attack the Empire's various military production facilities. He then fled to the Outer Rim. Palpatine then ordered Thrawn to stop Zaarin and either capture or kill him. So Thrawn tracked Zaarin to his hideout in the Outer Rim and destroyed much of his fleet. Zaarin once again escaped. However Thrawn knew Zaarin had a weakness, his reliance on technology. So Thrawn setup a phony cloaking device project. Zaarin couldn't resist the opportinety to steal the device. This is exactly what Thrawn wanted. So Thrawn let Zaarin's agents steal a Corellian corvette that had the "cloaking device". The ship had a tracking device in it and this allowed Thrawn to find Zaarin. Thrawn then destroyed Zaarin's flagship, the Imperial Star Destroyer Glory. Zaarin then tried to escape in the corvette. But when he activated the cloaking device the ship blew up, killing Zaarin. After this Thrawn awaited word from Endor to hear whether Palpatine was successful in destroying the Rebellion.

About his mission to the UR, he was accompanied by this guy that I forgot his name. I do remember that Thrawn left to the UR aboard the Star Destroyer Admonitor.

His commandship during the Zaarin chase was the ISDII Grey Wolf and the ISDI Resolution.

Thrawn's victory over Zaarin was a narrow one. Either Zaarin was able to outsmart Thrawn at several turns, or he had a very successful spy network inside Thrawn's forces. He managed to steal key technology, including the XM-1 Missile Boat. He destroyed secret facilities that the Empire could've used to produce enough advanced starfighters to turn the tide.

After Zaarin's defeat in the Iast System, Thrawn stayed in the Unknown Regions to complete his mission. He was aware of Isard's regime, but chose not to be involved.

Shame Zahn didn't think of naming Thrawn's flagship Grey Wolf. It suits Thrawn alot better than Chimaera.

Grey Wolf is more in line with Zahn's personality imo.

Check with the NEGtC concerning Thrawns whereabouts during the Battle of Endor. It, in fact, confirms that he was sent back to the UR some time before the battle and after his campagin to defeat Zaarin.

If Thrawn had NOT been out in the UR, the Battle of Endor might have ended quite differently.

The Rebels definetly wouldn't have had such an easy victory, that's for sure.

The Final Battle against Zaarin ended a few weeks before the Battle of Endor. Thrawn then returned to the Unknown Regions to finish his mission immediately after.

Commander Pellaeon was at the Battle of Endor aboard the Chimaera. His Captain was killed during the Battle and he assumed command and called for a retreat since no one else would.

Chimaera does suit Thrawn a whole lot better than Grey Wolf in TTT. Why? Think about the Chimaera in mythological terms and compare it to the command of the ship.

The Chimaera is a mixture of several creatures. A lion, a snake, and an eagle.

    Lion, superior and strong= Thrawn
    Eagle, noble and loyal= Pellaeon
    Snake, deadly and treacherous= Rukh

There's another anaology between the mythological Chimaera and the ship Chimaera, I just can't remember it right now.

I don't think very many realize that. One of these days I am going to ask Zahn whether its the reason why he named the ship Chimaera.

I kinda realized it after I realized that the smuggler ships were rearranged words. "Wild Karrde" for example is Wild Card. Zahn seems to enjoy putting hidden meanings or easter eggs in his ship names and other things.

Thrawn means "twisted" in Scottish Gaelic. Though I don't think Zahn intentionally meant that Thrawn was crazy. It could be that Thrawn twists and manipulates his enemies?

Rukh or Noghri is Mongolian, but I forgot what it means.

Better idea, ask him why he named the ship chimeara. I don't give him any ideas, he has been known to take credit for things he liked. Like him saying that the vong were the threat mentioned in VOF.

So when you ask him, I recommend not giving him any ideas and just make the question simple, such as, "Why did you name the ship chimeara?"

This way you will receive an honest answer from him, instead of a possibly colored answer.

    As for thrawn,

    "Main Entry: thrawn
    Pronunciation: 'thr[a']n
    Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English (Sc) thrawin, from past participle of Middle English thrawen to twist
    Date: 15th century
chiefly Scottish : lacking in pleasing or attractive qualities: as a : PERVERSE, RECALCITRANT b : CROOKED, MISSHAPEN
    - thrawn·ly adverb, chiefly Scottish "

More than one definition, and some of them fits thrawn in the TTT better than it does in HOT.
