if there was a political compass in Star Wars, what would be the major camps determined by in-universe issues only? As you might know George Lucas also likes to insert Politics into Star Wars, he was critical of Ronald Reagan, Nixon, and Bush and supported Hillary Clinton and Obama in the past. The prequels were also a direct criticism on how “Democracies aren’t overthrown, they’re given away” (His words not mine). So what political ideologies Star Wars characters will represent in your opinion? For example, Dooku is a racist aristocrat but also brands himself as an Anti-Corruption guy. Anakin being a slave as a young child and later a Law and Order guy gives the vibes of a Neocon hawk in the style of Bush/Reaganite type Republican, while Obi-Wan is probably a Centrist or an old-school Democrat. Palpatine (His public image, not his true self) can go either way honestly, while Bail Organa gives the vibes of a Clinton-Democrat. Luke can be a Teddy-type progressive or a New-Deal type dem, Han is a Libertarian for sure, Luke in "The New Republic" era gives the vibes of a more Conservative Democrat, while Jacen Solo can be a Neocon hawk as well. Thrawn can go either way as well but I think he will probably be a Conservative in the style of Rumsfeld
I had an idea to make a meme but never bothered to. centrism in real life: I don’t care about all this I just want to grill. centrism in SW: *montage of thousands of years of galactic conquest from the time of Uueg Tching to the First Order
I'd put Obi-Wan down as a mainstream Republican to be honest. Seems content with the status quo, respects those in authority such as the Jedi Council, generally pragmatic. Anakin comes across as a Tea Party/MAGA type, see especially his remarks about democracy in Ep II. Palpatine is essentially a fascist. Qui-Gon would probably vote Green Party.
Qui-Gon seemed close to Valorum who’s supposed to be an analogue of Clinton. One wonders if he was on any flights to mysterious private planets
That’s a bold statement. Spoiler: Nonsense about Ewoks I’d like to discuss the notion that the Ewoks, whilst conforming to some degree to the principles of Primitive Communism, e.g. gift economics of the Hunter Gather, there is a clear sense of the Noble Savage ideology permeating forth from their on screen depiction. Many behavioral scientists have theorized that the seemingly altruistic nature of the Noble Savage may in fact be a romanticised fallacy. I think Lucas draws upon this train of thought in how he demonstrates the bargaining skills of the Ewoks. Their willingness to help the rebels in the fight against the Empire isn’t an act indiscriminate kindness. As they (the Ewoks) themselves would also undoubtedly benefit from the extraction of imperial forces from their lands, as the Empire no doubt depletes the natural resources that Ewoks are reliant upon. So it’s a mutually beneficial relationship. One could argue that this is a cynical depiction of heroism by Lucas. And is in contradiction to the core ideologies that are woven into the fabric of his normal story telling style, hope, camaraderie, sound morals etc. Personally, I doubt he put that much thought into it. I reckon he just heard about Kenners $100 million investment in The Care Bears, and thought, “kerrrching!”.
This could get very ugly. Sheev Palpatine is obviously the top of authoritarianism and probably in the Auth Right (but not all the way to the right). Obi-Wan and a lot of the Jedi are probably left or right-leaning centrists that also are a mix of authority and liberty. Boba Fett (in his show) would probably be in the Libertarian Left square (near the center) or the Libertarian Right near the center. He dislikes a lot of authority but realizes it's necessary. Hondo would probably be Libertarian Right. He is loyal to no governments and mostly cares about profit (with some exceptions). Leia might be libertarian (even if only a bit) on the axis given that she is very wary of a centralized government and thinks planets should have a lot of sway over the New Republic as a whole. Whether she's more left or right-leaning is debatable. Communists and even socialists don't really seem to exist much in Star Wars. Some of the smaller settlements or races might be one of the two.
