Which annoys you more: Obi-Wan's pick-up hair from Episode I or Obi-Wan's CGI beard from Episode II?

    Hey all,

As a member who posts regularly in the 3NS and Attack of the Clones forums, I constantly hear members griping about Ewan McGregor's CG beard during all of the scenes shot after principle photography. They hated it in Attack of the Clones - it annoyed them, and they are hoping that Ewan sports a live beard throughout the entire Revenge of the Sith.

For all of this griping, however, I hear far less complaints about Ewan McGregor's appearance in the scenes shot after principle photography for The Phantom Menace. In those scenes, Ewan physically appears to be heavier, even boarder-line portly, and his hair, as in AOTC, does not match that shot during principle.

So, which annoys you more? For all of the griping that I hear on a near daily basis, I can't say that the CG beard bothers me at all. It really doesn't. The inserted scenes with Ewan in TPM, however, especially the scene in which Obi-Wan apologizes to Qui-Gon Jinn, always sticks out like a sore thumb.

I don't let either of these pick-up hair blunders ruin my enjoyment of the film in anyway, but I am curious as to why it seems as though the CGI beard, which is much less noticeable in my opinion, is mentioned far less than Ewan's appearance in TPM. I am anxious to hear what my fellow Star Wars fans think. :)

Ewan's TPM hair bothered a fair number of people in 1999, but the criticism seemed to stop quickly .

A couple of those TPM scenes were too obvious, such as the daylight scene you mentioned.
I assume Ewan had other filming commitments during the pickups, since the short spikey cut would be so simple to recreate.

I do remember several people being upset and bothered by Ewan's hair in TPM, but it never seemed to be anything like the hatred against his fake beard in Attack of the Clones.

I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that so many people are angred by anything CGI...

The TPM hair still bothers me more than the AOTC beard. By far.

The AotC beard was CGI? But Ewan had a real beard in the interviews...

No. Ewan grew a real beard to film Attack of the Clones, but he did not have a beard when he returned to film pick-up scenes and shots. His beard was CGed in these scenes.

The AOTC beard doesn't really bug me at all. The TPM hair was awful though! In the swamp apology, he looks puffy and pasty and the wig looks red. It doesn't ruin the movies for me but I wish GL didn't have to do pick up shots.
    Here's a comparison.

Every time it cuts to a shot of the pick up hair,
it takes me out of the movie. That shot, right after
Maul off's Qui-Gon, where Obi is standing there
glowering. It should be a powerful shot, but instead
you have Ewan, give or take a dozen doughnuts, and
that horrible, awful wig. Even Shatner wouldn't have
worn that during the T.J Hooker years.

BTW, I didn't know Ewan had any scenes with a CG beard
in AOTC. I know there are scenes with an awful wig
that looks like they stole it from a corpse. Anyone
know in which scenes he has the CG beard?

Tell you the truth...I never really noticed either difference. But Obi-Wan from TPM always did look bad to me, so I'll say the pick-up hair.

What scenes are you talking about? Can you pull up a pic or tell us specifically what your talking about? I tried googleing it and there is nothing about a CG beard to be found. Provide proof and I'll believe you. I haven't watched AOTC in a very long time nor do I have any wish to watch it just to find some CG beard that may or may not exist.

I thought they used a fake beard in the pick-up shots. Why would they go through the trouble of creating a CG one? Thats silly...

It's really not a big deal to me.But if I had to pick, the shot in TPM where he looks fatter is kind of annoying. :p

Oh, thats whats being talked about. I always thought that was a glued on beard and not a CGI one? Did they come out and say that was a CGI beard or is this just guess work on the communities part? A CGI beard would be more expensive and time consuming. And we all know how tight Georgie Boy gets with money. That shot would take forever if it was CGI. They would have to mold that to his face and then animate every frame. I can't see him going through the trouble when a glued on beard would do the same job for less time and money. Do they say it's CGI on the commentary?

A CGI beard would be a lot more costly and difficult to create than a glue-on beard. It would be like having all the actors where "blue screen suits" and CGI-ing clothing in post-production.

    Doesn't make sense.

I've known about the CGI beard but never really been able to pick it out. Doesn't bother me much, but I'm sure I could see if I looked hard enough.

The TPM wig, however, is *really* annoying. I try not to notice it, but I just can't sometimes. It's way too stiff and too red as well.

As for Episode III reshoots, though, you need not fear. Ewan's been re-growing out the beard on his motorcycle journey. So he still has it until they're finished with those, then he's shaving it off for a fundraiser thing for Unicef. Ok, not sure how that works but yeah.

    You see? No worries.
