It depends on your point of view.

The dark side seems stronger, and, in a way, is. (Lucas explains this on the AOTC commentary.) You can do more with it - destroy, burn, ruin.
But it demands more than it gives, and it leads to your own destruction. (See: Anakin dying and becoming Vader... Palpatine being eaten away and eventually betrayed.)

So in the long run, while the light side may not be more immediately powerful, it is eventually the more rewarding and beneficial choice. Watch Luke, Obi and Yoda (and redeemed Anakin) at the end of ROTJ. They may not be able to shoot lightning from their fingers, but is there any doubt that they won?

The dark side is stronger simply because of this:- How many Sith do you see defecting to the good side? None is your answer. I thank you!

well, the light side, i think can control, certain stuations, as in the dark side, like anikin for example would rush into a duel, withought thinking, also, the light side, like obi-wan would be more calm and stay in control, of a duel, instead of letting his emotins take over

I think Luke has already asked Yoda this question in the swamps of Dagobah, and it went a little something like this...

YODA: Run! Yes. A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger...fear...aggression. The dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

LUKE: Vader. Is the dark side stronger?

YODA: No...no...no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

LUKE: But how am I to know the good side from the bad?

YODA: You will know. When you are calm, at peace. Passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.

Think of them as two different roads.

On the dark road, you go really, really fast. The only problem is that it dead ends in brick wall, and you have no brakes.

The light road goes slowly, but it goes on and on. You have complete control of your vehicle.

So you can get more powerful, more quickly with the Dark Side, but you'll burn out. In the end, if you walk the righteous path, you'll be more powerful in the light

The Dark Side is stronger, because the "light side" is pure EU, and EU is weak.

    8-}

Seriously, the Dark Side philosophy is more powerful than the Jedi philosophy, simply because it doesn't have the self-restriction that the Jedi place upon themselves of not attacking using the Force (for example.) There's undoubtedly no Sith equivalent of Yoda's rule- "A Sith uses the force for attack- never for knowledge or defence"!

But the Dark Side of the Force is not stronger than the Force that Yoda talks of as his ally in ESB, because it's only a part of it, so it can't be greater than the whole. (Which is another reason why the concept of a "light side of the Force" is a weak idea.) A Jedi serves the Force, rather than attempting to harness it's power for themselves, they live to serve it.

Which is why a Jedi like Obi Wan can let go of everything and become one with the Force, becoming "more powerful than [Vader] could possibly imagine"- because a Sith like Vader couldn't comprehend the idea of becoming more powerful by giving up their own life. They take and take and take from the Force without considering giving back, which is why they disrupt the balance of the Force.

    I think.

This question is actually focused on pretty heavily in the prequels if you observe closely. It goes back to this issue of balance. Why do the Jedi want the force to be balanced and what are the consequences of it being unbalanced?

In AOTC, Mace Windu says that he believes it is time to tell the senate that their ability to use the force has diminshed. The Jedi are obviously becoming weaker but how is that even possible? Meanwhile Count Dooku tells Obi-Wan that he has become more powerful then any jedi, and, with the exception of Yoda, you would have to say he is pretty accurate seeing how he can school two of the most powerful Jedi with no problem. You put these two together and you start to see that an unbalanced force drains power from one side or another. Even Yoda tells us this when he says that the dark side has clouded everything.

That is why Luke is so particularly potent in ANH; the sides have drastically turned where a light side user can actually be more powerful then the dark side. He can sort of tapp into this whole unused field of the force because the dark side is ultimately in control at this point in the galaxy. Think back to ESB where the Emperor asks Vader if Luke can be turned. Why doesn't he know? That is the first time in the saga that we see the Emperor unsure of his plans. It progresses even further when he completely underestimates the ewoks on Endor.

So I guess my personal opinion is that the most powerful side is determined by balance. In theory, they should both be equal if they had an equal amount of people acting upon them.

Just as Yoda confirmed, The Dark Side is not stronger then The Light Side. Jedis are able to return as Ghosts (to help guide other Jedi Knights they were close to) and become one with the Force but when The Sith die they really die.

The Dark Side is easier to succumb to and harder to escape from. It's certainly easier to lie than tell the truth, and even harder to stop that cycle - for example.

As for seer power in the Force: it's anyone's guess. Although I would say the Light Side; given the fact that it's less corrupting and seems easier on your complexion. (The Emperor.) 8-} ;) :D

    >>>The Jedi are obviously becoming weaker but how is that even possible?

They aren't becoming weaker- they are learning that their knowledge through the Force isn't as good as it once was. The Dark Side is clouding everything.

Imagine that the Force is perfectly balanced, and you can see the future through it. Then you see something that will happen, and you decide to change it. That changes the future, so another Jedi "looking" at the same thing won't see it as clearly as the first, because the first has altered it. The future becomes clouded, because of a Jedi acting out of his own interests (as opposed to "following the Will of the Force.") That's how I understand the whole "dark side clouding" idea.

    >>>>Meanwhile Count Dooku tells Obi-Wan that he has become more powerful then any jedi, and, with the exception of Yoda, you would have to say he is pretty accurate seeing how he can school two of the most powerful Jedi with no problem.

"With the exception of Yoda" is a pretty important exception though- if there was such a thing as the "light side" and it was being diminished, I think it would hit Yoda harder than anyone. But it doesn't, and it doesn't!

Dooku's powerful, no doubt about it. Probably more powerful than he ever thought possible when he was a Jedi, since he turned to the Dark Side and started using the Force to do whatever he wanted to do with it, instead of serving others...

    >>>>You put these two together and you start to see that an unbalanced force drains power from one side or another. Even Yoda tells us this when he says that the dark side has clouded everything.

When your whole philosophy about the Force relies on using it to "see" clearly, then suddenly you can't "see", that's going to diminish your powers. But I don't think it somehow makes the Sith more powerful- it just cripples the Jedi.

I think the whole Archives thing is supposed to be analagous for the Force.

Only a Jedi can manipulate the Archives. Only someone trained in the Jedi Arts can manipulate the Force.

When the Jedi learn that what they are seeing through the Force isn't accurate- (that a clone army has been created without them noticing) then they can't rely on their knowledge anymore.
Likewise, when the Jedi learn that what they are seeing in their Archives isn't accurate- (that a planet exists without them knowing) then they can't rely on their knowledge
    anymore.

    >>>Think back to ESB where the Emperor asks Vader if Luke can be turned. Why doesn't he know? That is the first time in the saga that we see the Emperor unsure of his plans

That's because it relies on an unknown (to him) quantity.

The reason Palpatine "sees" the future is because he's in control of it- he's pulling the strings. Not because he sees the future. IMHO...

`No! No. But... easier, more seductive.'

I always thought that Yoda answers this very quickly. And perhaps a touch untruthfully, like he's desperate to squash any idea that it's stronger.

The Darkside of the Force gives you an immediate burst of power. You dont have to earn it, but as a consequence you lose yourself in it. It partially controls you.

The Lightside of the Force is earned through hardwork, meditation, and training. The results are not immediate like the Darkside, but you are in control of yourself.

Overall as Yoda said the Lightside and Darkside of the Force are equal in strength. It just takes a Jedi using the Lightside of the Force longer to attain that level because they earned it instead of losing control of themselves for that power.

Thats how I look at it anyway.

I am biased, because I am a Jedi Knight, but I believe it is the light. I'll explain why in a minute. Someone said if equal in number they both are equally powerfull or something like that. Well, Sith don't do big groups, 'cause they'd kill each other.

Now, The good is more powerfull because you are connected to other beings, which I believe gives added strength to a Jedi (e.g. Yoda's duel).

What Anakin stated in Episode I "No one can kill a Jedi" is probably the most true of all statements. I believe that though a Jedi can physically be killed, because of their connection to the living Force, they then become one with the Force, which I believe is a more powerfull form of life.
That is how a Jedi is more powerfull. Eternal life.

Retaining your identity after physical life could be seen as a self-serving act, and thus connected to the dark side.

    True, but this isn't a Jedi's power.

Jedi regard the Force as an ally- they serve the Force, rather than making it serve them. To use this power for their own ends, whether it's for something evil such as enslaving the galaxy, or something honourable such as rescuing a loved one, if it's for their own personal ends is the Dark Side. Which is why it's the more powerful side.

If the force has a will, then the force has an agenda on it's own, thus making the force dark sided, since it is a self-serving purpose to create Anakin and so on.

darth vader is who you see switching from the dark to the light.

and that is why the light is more powerful.

yoda and obi wan tell luke that once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny. luke manages to pass the test of not going to the dark side. thats what makes him a jedi. that is the trial that a jedi must pass. incredible temptation. obi passed it by not switching over by maintaining his compiosure even when angry and venengful.

is the dark side more powerful. no it is quicker and eiser as most have agreed on.
good is more powerful. it guides obi and yoda to allow the fate of the jedi. to follow their destiny. the force protects luke. and allows luke to survive almost impoosable events. vader should have killed him in the trench. he should have killed him on bespin, and again on the death star 2. the force hid yoda and obi wan from vader and hid luke from vader. he should have been able to sense them but he did not. he does not sense luke until after yavin.

the good side sacrificed the jedi to dispose of the dark side. to bring balance back. it just took a very long and hard road.

Point taken DD, but you have to note that 1) The sith do not truly connect themselves with the living force and 2) and the reason Jedi are preserved after life is so they can assist others.

    To qoute Obi-Wan:

So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
