Well, which do you think would win in a fight--a wolf, or a cougar/mountain lion/panther/puma/whatever else they're called? :p

It depends on the specific wolf and the specific cougar/mountain lion/panther/puma/etc.

    Yeah, but I mean generally...

Like, generally, would a big man be able to beat up a small man?

Why do you think the cougar would beat the wolf?

Wolves and cougars are both around 100 pounds, sometimes more or less. Both are hunters, though one is a loner and the other is a pack animal. Nevertheless, both are fierce. The female cougar is said to have an incredibly terrifying scream, and everyone knows of the terror that a wolf's howl can create.

But when it comes down to it...which of these creatures is the most feared, four-legged hunter in North America?

Also, where would a lynx stand? Is a cougar stronger/more ferocious than a lynx?

The largest recorded cougar would outweigh the largest recorded wolf by about 25 pounds, and the cougar's jaws can clamp with more pressure than any domesticated dog's (although I don't know how they compare to a wolf's). Wolves and cougars can move at similar speeds, but I'm pretty sure the cougar's claws are more devastating.

    Also, cats pwn.

The cougar's claws are also retractable...which is nice if you ever want to have one as a pet.

And although the largest wolf in records is about 25 pounds lighter than the largest recorded cougar, I somehow doubt that those records include any measurements concerning the dire wolf breed, which was in fact the largest breed of wolf in existence (before they became extinct, of course).

While we may conclude that the general cougar could take out the general wolf, what if we matched the strongest cougar against a dire wolf?

    Cougar wins

Proving once again, that 2004 is the year of cougar - the Discovery Channel pitted a cougar against a grey wolf.
But not in 'real life', it's a show called Animal Face-Off.
They imagine what it would be like if two immensely powerful animals faced off in a fight

The cougar won. Cougars are in the proverbial house.
    Cougar up!

The dire wolf was a large canine that exhibited hyena like characteristics. Like the hyena, the dire wolf hunted and scavenged for food. Researchers suspect that dire wolves, due to their scavenging nature, scattered the bones of animals they killed or that were killed by other prey. The dire wolf was not quite like any animal we have today. It was similar in overall size and mass to a large modern gray wolf. (A popular misconception is that dire wolf dwarfed the modern day grey wolf) It was about 1.5 meters (5 feet) long and weighed about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) on average. The dire wolf looked fairly similar to the modern gray wolf; however, there were several important differences. The dire wolf had a larger, broader head and shorter, sturdier legs than its modern relative. The teeth of dire wolf much larger and more massive than those of the gray wolf. The brain case of the dire wolf is also smaller than that of a similarly-sized gray wolf. The fact that the lower part of the legs of the dire wolf are proportionally shorter than those of the gray wolf, indicates that the dire wolf was probably not a good a runner as the gray wolf. Many paleontologists think that the dire wolf may have used its relatively large, massive teeth to crush bone. This idea is supported by the fact that dire wolf teeth frequently have large amounts of wear on their crowns. Several people have suggested that dire wolves may have made their living in similar ways to the modern hyenas. Wolves and coyotes are relatively common large carnivores found in Ice Age sites. In fact, several thousand dire wolves have been found in the asphalt pits at Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, CA. The coyote, gray wolf, and dire wolf have all been found in paleontological sites in the Midwestern U.S. The first specimen of a dire wolf was found at near Evansville, Indiana. Clark Kimberling of the University of Evansville has traced the very interesting history of this specimen.

Although the dire wolf was slightly bigger than a grey wolf, it doesn't seem to have been smarter or faster. Besides that the grey wolf is still around and the dire wolf was dumb enough to fall into the tar pits and go extinct.

    What are they fighting over?

If they're fighting over the remains of an elderly woman, I'd bet money on the cougar. Otherwise the wolf will win.

    I have nothing against wolves.

I had a Huskie-Wolf hybrid when I was younger and she was the smartest derned pet I've ever owned.

I'm just saying that the cougar would win.

The had this show on Discovery Channel for a while, I think there were like, 5 episodes. It was like, who would beat who. They made this computer program that was like, Animal World RPG. They would give different atributes to the different animals, and all of this stuff. When they were done with all of this, they would make the animals fight each other in a fight simulator. It was auctally kind of cool, from the Computer Programming side of me.

The one I remember off hand was a Grizzaly Bear vs. Alligator. I think the gator won.

Anyway, this sounds like a match up they shoulda done :p

I'm giving my support to the cat. I'm not fond of cats, but I hate dogs even more, and wolf is part of the dog family.

    So, go cougars!
