Note: I am not trying to bash AOTC here. Other than this aspect of the film, I enjoyed AOTC.

When watching AOTC on DVD today I was reminded of how annoying Anakin was. He made the nine year old Anakin seem tolerable. "Yipee!" was not nearly as irritating as Anakin's temper tantrum when he whines "I'll be the most powerful Jedi ever!" I know he was probably made annoying intentionally, but couldn't George Lucas make him somewhat likable? He's supposed to be one of the main protagonists, but he's extremely whiny(more than Luke was) and very cocky. I bet between TPM and AOTC Obi-Wan nearly crossed over to the dark side due to an urge to kill Anakin. I just don't see him as the future Darth Vader, because I can't visualize Vader as being whiny.

It was also hard for me to like Anakin after the Tusken slaughter. I was rooting for Count Dooku at the end of AOTC. Padme obviously wasn't too bright if she decided to stay with him even after he told her that he killed a whole group of people.

Fair warning: I'm probably quite biased, as my favorite OT character has always been Anakin/Vader. I liked him a lot in TPM, too. ;)

Not suprisingly, I liked him a lot in AOTC. I think he is a realistic portrayal of a young man in that stage of life. I also like the fact he is shown warts and all-He isn't perfect, and it shows. I think he's a rather deep character, so far as SW characters go. ^_^

As for Padme...I don't think she even thinks the tuskens ARE people. Think about it, she's never had contact with one, and the description that she hears about them? Those Tuskens walk like men, but they're vicious, mindless monsters.-Cliegg.

Anakin is a whiny anti-hero who goes out of his way to make himself unlikable.

    Annoying, definitely.

Surely, you must be joking.. I mean, come on. Anakin was probably the most highly anticipated character of the PT but every second we have seen him has been a second of over acting or just plain stupidicy.

He was annoying in TPM and he still is annoying in AOTC. I just hope that kid who plays him learns some acting before Episode 3.

I disagree. Justifying poor writing by using real world examples is just pathetic. No, movie-goer wants to see some whiny teenager, regardless of how (arguably) realistic the portrayal is.

I found Anakin rather annoying as well. But I suppose that was Lucas' point to show what an impatient and impetuous loose-cannon he was.

(I would have liked to have seen a more likable Anakin personally. That way, his forthcoming turn to the Dark Side would play out a little more powerfully).

Still, he wasn't as annoying as he was in TPM. Wish Lucas would have made Anakin 20 in that movie. Didn't much sense to make him 9 or 10 in TPM. Lucas claims he did that to make parting from his mother more dramatic for him, but that didn't seem to pan out (considering Anakin waited 10 years to see her).

I like him. The portrayal is very believable. He isn´t really that whiny if you think about it, he´s just a little overconfident.
Under his tough teenage surface, you can feel that he is a sincerely good man.

Natalie Portman: Oh yeah, George was constantly directing Hayden to act younger and be more whiney, to convey that concept, Hayden hated that.

I found Anakin a little bit irritating.

Luke was always a likeable character. There's something a bit more down-to-earth with farmboy Luke. The fact that he was just some kid that lived in the middle of nowhere and wanted to get away gave the audience something to connect to. Luke was like the kid that lived down the road from you who daydreamed of moving away from a sleepy village to the big city.

Anakin in AOTC is more like the whiny son of a millionaire who has too many ferrari's, spending his time dining with royalty and working for bureaucrats. In a way, you feel sympathy for him, but its hard to actually connect with him. He's like a galactic version of Michael Jackson, he starts off as an ordinary kid who gets whisked off at a young age, but as he grows up and enjoys his fame and wealth, he turns into something hideous.

    Thanks Darth_Zidious... :)

Draculas_guest has a point. The reason for my frustration with the character of Anakin isn't just the fact that he's so annoying, but also the fact that this kid is so arrogant it makes me sick. I couldn't care less about he becoming Darth Vader and the Emperors slave. Servers him right.

With Luke it would've been much more tragic, should he have fallen to the dark side. With Anakin, I just don't care.

I also liked Anakin in AOTC. He was suppose to be whny becuase he was updset with how his training was going with Obi-Wan. Wasn't Luke whiney in ANH? Yes as a few lines were mentioned. How about ESB? He was very impatient with Yoda. Thought what he was teaching him was "impossible" like with the lifting of the X-wing. I say Anakin portayed in AOTC fits perfectly.

Well, if you don´t feel sorry for Anakin, that´s your loss. Personally, I find the Tatooine part of AOTC to be very touching.

He must have had a pretty insular life in the Jedi Temple, in this formative teenage years. He's had no experience with women, so of course his chat-up lines are gonna be cheesey. He's just going to come straight out with his emotions, and hope they work.

I took a gamble with a new friend of two weeks, and told her I loved her, and that I felt there was something special between us. I'd probably get laughed out of town if this was committed to film, but it was how I felt and more importantly how she secretly felt, too. We've been seeing each other for about 3 years now :) Anakin blurted out his feelings, but luckily for him girls seem to like that kind of honesty sometimes.

Again you're merely justifying the bad dialogue and not looking it in the eye. Lucas would not be so dumb as to purposely make the writing awful. I get the feeling he actually thought the dialogue in these scenes were perfect.

Next thing you know people will be trying to justify this:
"I wish I could just wish away these feelings."

Hmmm, see Anakin was a slave, and he probably never went to school, so he like um didn't get much instruction on grammar and sentence structure you know? So it's like Lucas was purposely um trying to bring home the point that Anakin was a slave, and therefore, well, show how Anakin turns to the darkside. Yes, that is what he did. All on purpose of course.

No this was not justifying bad dialogue. There are people out there that liked Anakin. They felt for his charater. There are also people who can see that he is not very good with women because he is training to be a Jedi. There not going to be showing him how to pick up women. I'm glad he did not sound like he knew what he was doing. If he did I would not have liked it. Padme is the 1st woman he has ever loved.

So he will say things that are dumb. But they will all be ture things because he really means them. Because he erally dose love her. Also liek many people said before Luke is more annoying then Anakin.

    "Where are you going?"

"It looks like I'm not going anywhere!"

As for who found Anakin annoying, I'd have to say Obi-Wan, Captain Typho, Padme, etc.

Again you're merely justifying the bad dialogue...

    I'll let Lucas respond:

"I wanted to write a love story in a style that was extremely old-fashioned, and frankly I didn't know if I was going to pull it off. In many ways this was much more like a movie that from the 1930s than any of the others had been, with a slightly over-the-top, poetic style-and they just don't do that in movies anymore. I was very happy with the way it turned out in the script and in the performances, but I knew people might not buy it. A lot of guys were going to see this movie, and most guys think that kind of flowery, poetic talk is stupid--'Come on, give me a break.' More sophisticated, cynical types also don't buy that stuff. So I didn't know if people would laugh at it and throw things at the screen or they would accept it. Let's face it, their dialogue in that (couch) scene is pretty corny. It is presented very honestly, it isn't tongue-in-cheek at all, and it's really played to the hilt. But it is consistant with the over all Star Wars style. Most people don't understand the style of SW. They don't get that there is an underlying motif that is very much like a 1930s western or Saturday matinee serial. It's in that more romantic period of making movies and adventure films. And this film is even more of a melodrama then the others."

I wonder if Obi-Wan was ever fed up to the point that he wanted to be transferred to another Padawan. I can imagine him begging to Yoda, and Yoda responding with, "Got yourself into this you did. Warn you did I. But no...listen you did not! Sorry for you I do not feel."

I think anakin was potrayed near perfectly. I think people are too critical of the character anakin. I don't think it matters how perfect he was played or by whom he would still be critisized. He's going to vader one of the most popular villians ever!! How else should he act but whiny and big headed. He has everyone telling him he's the chosen one and lets not forget Palpatine is feeding him lines like "I forsee you being the greatest jedi ever." Who wouldn't get a big head?!?!?!

I'm shocked at people saying the confession scene and the slaughter scene were bad acting, and wasn't good. Come on?!?! That was one of the most powerful scenes in all fo star wars. I never got chills and near tears in any other scene in all of star wars. After that confession scene I could definetely see him as vader. How else is he supposed to turn to the dark side? I think the slaughter was a good idea. I mean come on in empire he killed HUMAN officers without a second thought. What better way for a soon to be murderer of the jedi to fall to the darkside?
