TPM, on Coruscant: Capt. Panaka comes in and tells Amidala that Senator Palpatine has been nominated for Supreme Chancellor. Also nominated are Bail Antilles of Alderaan, and some other person. Was this a script error, should have been Bail Organa, or what? I though I heard that this was an error, but I'm not sure. If there are any more damm Antilles in Star Wars, I'm going to go nuts!

Who is Bail Antilles of Alderaan?

    I am. Sorry to disappoint.

    :p

No, Bail Antilles is a COMPLETELY seperate person from:

    Bail Organa
    Wedge Antilles
    Captain Antilles
    my beloved Aunt Tilly
    Bea Arthur
    Sifo-Dyas
That one guy who goes to all the sports games with the fright wig and John 3:16 sign

There's a StarWars.com question that touches on this... explains that Antilles is a common name in the GFFA.

    Which is cool I guess.

Thanks, Adam. That is just retarded though. Why would they do this??? BTW, I saw your website the other day, pretty funny stuff. I still suspect that it was supposed to be Bail Organa, but they screwed up.

Glad you liked the Web site.

It was definitely NOT intended to be Bail Organa. The shooting script of TPM included Bail Organa doing something entirely different.

There are many people wandering around the SW universe. I personally like to think that name-dropping an Antilles is Lucas' little inside joke about how
    - two actors played Wedge Antilles during ANH
    - there's a totally separate Captain Antilles wandering around ANH...
    - ... who some sources refer to as Captain Colton

It's just a fun name to say. Antilles. Antilles. Say it with me. Antilles.

You just had to bring up The Fake Wedge, didn't you? Yeah I suppose it was a joke. Captain Antilles (Colton?) was the guy who gets strangled at the beginning of ANH, if I remember correctly.

Hey, I'm not SAYING I think it was a joke... I just LIKE to think of it that way. :p I can't guess at Lucas' motivations.

As for Fake Wedge, I just prefer to pretend he's not Wedge. Screw what the EU says, and screw Lucas' scripts and documents and what-all. I won't believe he's Wedge unless the UE adds a "Hello, my name is Wedge" sticker onto his chest. Ha! Take that! :p Huzzah for continuity!

If you watch ANH, Luke is sitting next to Wedge Antilles while being briefed on the Death Star mission. The pilot is supposed to be Wedge, but another actor had to fill in for Denis Lawson, who plays all of Wedge's other parts. So this guy is refered to as "The Fake Wedge." The funny part is that the audience isn't supposed to notice the switch.

I'm sure one day the EU will come up with a 600 page book to explain the origins of this crucial character.

In ESB SE Vader says "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival". (I prefer "Bring my shuttle")

The joke is that Saurumon only goes out on his balcony.... It's funny, I laugh picturing Saurumon saying that.

But really, if you think about it, from the audience point of view the fake Wedge is infact the real Wedge, as it's the first time we see Wedge in the film! So Denis Lawson is infact the fake Wedge. I say we get him.

well Actually, the audience is never told that that guy is named wedge. i've seen star wars a million times and never got the impression that guy was supposed to be wedge. he's just some guy. the first time anyone is called Wedge is when refering to denis lawson.

As someone said earlier, I think it's the guy Vader's choking at the beginning of ANH.

Is that the only place in the film that that actor appears? What happened to the character? I bet he ran off to save his own life.

One things for sure he's an even bigger coward than Wedge. Maybe it's Wedge's brother, it stands to reason because they have the same yellow streak.

Ladies and gentlemen; Prince Bail Antilles of Alderaan!

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/episode1/newspics/cut_bail.jpg]

He had some scenes in the script but all were left out of the finished film.

And he's not the same person as Bail Organa or Captain Antilles and he's not related to Wedge Antilles in any way.

So, not only is Antilles a popular name in the galaxy, can we assume that Bail is a popular name on Alderaan (like John is here on Earth)?

I agree with DoctorZaius - if the other Rebel pilot is not referred to as Wedge, how are we supposed to know that's who it's supposed to be?

That photograph linked above is of the actor Adrian Dunbar, who was originally cast as Bail Organa in ep1. Those scenes were cut from the film.

Panaka in ep1 makes reference to Bail Antilles of Alderaan, a separate person. (Bail Antilles is also never seen on screen in ep1.) In some ep1-related merchandise and books, including the one which that photo is taken from, the photos of Adrian Dunbar in costume have been re-used to show him as Bail Antilles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Lucas dub in Denis Lawson's voice during Fake Wedge's lines to Luke? It sure sounds like Lawson, and it looks like at the very least there was a bad ADR job on Fake Wedge's voice, because the mouth doesn't quite match the voice, and as I recall there's a bit of a quality difference between Fake Wedge's dialogue and the rest of the scene. Whether it's Lawson's voice or the voice of the actual Fake Wedge actor, it sure seems like FW's dialogue was re-recorded and dropped into the scene.

Bail Antilles... y'know, it would have worked just as well to have had Panaka say "Bail Organa" there. Obviously, Organa ends up being a serious player in the senate anyway, and it would have made sense for him to be in all those private meetings with Palpatine in AOTC had he been one of those who ran against Palpatine for Chancellor in TPM. Palpatine does seem to be the type to subscribe to the old political adage "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer", doesn't he?

You are correct, Patrick Russell! Denis Lawson wasn't available that day for filming (that seems really weird, but true). So, whoever played Wedge that day got dubbed over and became known as Fake Wedge. There's some website that has quotes or whatever proof there is to support my claims, I don't know the name.Just look up "Fake Wedge." BTW, Denis Lawson is Ewan McGregor's uncle.

Better yet, just check the ANH script.

I've read in various places that the name "Bail Antilles" in the GFFA is not unlike "John Smith" here.

Two common names, which would explain why they both come up again with different people.
