My vote is for Stackpole, he not only created the series, but I think he portrayed war in a more realistic manner than Allston. Also, I think his Antilles characerization was a bit off, in the RS series Wedge is more uptight, and then in the WS series he is more loose and relaxed. Of course he was commanding different pilots with more carefree pilots which explains part of the difference, in my opinion.

I liked Stackpole better because his battle sequences were alot more exciting than Allison's.

Technically, I think Stackpole's probably a better writer, but I just find the Wraith trilogy a lot more readable than the Rogue tetralogy.

I want an author that writes a Squadron book about the whole squadron, not a character or two.

I want pilots who have a sense of humour, as that day could well be your last.

    I want inventive plans.

    I want a writer who didn't write Isard's Revenge.

I want developed characters to die, to further develop others.

If there is romance, I want to see more than two characters that are focussed on having it (And I do NOT count Nawaras as a relationship, we barely even saw it).

I want a consistently great line.

    I want Allston.

    :D

I went with Allston. Stackpole's books were excellent, but like Reaper said, Allston's secondary characters were more developed.

    And then there's Kettch. :p

Stackpole. They even used his ideas from X-Wing to do the Nintendo 64 game ROGUE SQUADRON off it.

From what i Heard, it was the direct effect of reading the X-Wing series, or at least the first game or two, that inspired someone at LucasArts to pitch ROGUE SQUADRON as a video game. Probably one of my favorite for the old Nintendo 64.

Allston. Stackpole's great, but I can read and re-read the Wraith books and find myself amused and entertained far beyond the Rogue books.

Allston, because his books were more fun, and funnier than Stackpole's. I liked Stackpole's books, but I find I enjoyed Allston's more.

I have to go with Allston. While I enjoyed Stackpole's Rogue Squadron, Allston's Wraith Squadron is what made the X-Wing series so good a read for me.

Same here. While I think they're both equally good writers, the humour gives Allston the bonus. Sometimes he goes over the boundaries a bit, and I'm not saying every SW book should be as humourous as his ones, but when I compare the two X-wing trilogies, I find that Allston's is more fun to read.

Allston is just more fun. I like Stackpole's books, but I love Allston's. They're the ones I keep coming back to when I need to calm down and escape.

    Stackpole

It's close but I believe he was better at character development and was not as over the top with his humor as Allston was.

Better (and more even) character development...

Actually, in Stackpole's defense, Syntax, I don't believe that he was worser at character development that Allston. Allston just handled more characters' developments, but that doens't mean he wrote them better. I think Stackpole did at great job a developing Corran Horn's character.

I have to say Allston. His characters irritated me less. But hey, it is just personal preference

Allston. As much as I love the 1st 7 books, I am more eager to reread the second half than the first (of those seven. I didn't really care for 8 and 9 is pretty stand-alone.) Its not the humor, its more the characters. Ellasar, Face, Ton, Donos, Piggy, Runt, Lara, Tyria, Kell, Falynn..... I love those guys!

IMO, Allston barely edges out against Stackpole.

I almost enjoy them equally, but Stackpole has little writing idiosynchrocies that get to me more and more over the years.

Allston, Stackpole's charcters were a little on the boring side for me...but then I skip the space fights and just read the interesting parts anyways.
