Post World War II, it is well-known common knowledge of who the greatest Generals of the War were, from the Allied perspective: Eisenhower, Marshall, McArthur, Montgomery, etc...

Now that we know about the Clone Wars in detail, who do you think the greatest Generals were.

I think that Obi-Wan Kenobi was fanwanked into becoming a mythical General on par with Alexander the Great. Seriously folks, in ANH, all it was mentioned that Obi-Wan fought in the Clone Wars. Leia's plea doesn't mention anything about greatness.

So now that we know Obi-Wan's feats in the Clone Wars, how does his reputation stack up militarily? Is he an average General, or does his deeds warrant greatness, ie: Eisenhower?

Even more interesting, who where the greatest NON-JEDI Generals? Was Tarkin a General equivalent in the Clone Wars?

Overall, I think that heer Kenobi was most likely an above-average general, if only because of his main-character status. I haven't read enough Clone Wars books with him in it to make an actual guess, but I've always seem to think that he's more comfortable in the role of a diplomat and a warrior on the battlefield, rathern than actual leading this troops. Not that he couldn't do the latter, mind you, as the Clone Wars cartoon and Battle of Jabiiim arc have shown.

As for one of the greatest Jedi Generals out there, I'll nominate Echuu Shen-Jon. I think it's a great pity for the Republic that he abandoned his posting so bloody early in the war, as he showed that could take a great role in leading armies. When the seperatists had managed to steal important technology from the battlefield, his furious counterattack managed to completely route their advance, crippled their ability to use the Decimator, and managed to kill one of Dooku's generals. Unfortunately, his Jedi skills do come into question here, as he did fall to the Dark Side, and had to go into self-imposed exile.

Still, his leaderships would come in handy when Leia came across him on Krant, and he basically led a small rag-tag group of Rebels and Wookiees into a heavily Imperial-protected base to destroy the Vor'Na'Tu artifact, sacrificing himself afterwards, so that Leia could live.

I still say that he and Kenobi are comparing notes in the Jedi Afterlife.

Obi Wan was a good general for the following reasons:

He got the job DONE when it counted and when others couldn't.
He was able to adapt to rapid changing circumstances in a fight (like Durge).
    He led from the front.

Reasons why he wasn't the BEST.

He was TOO emotionally involved in the war sometimes. How would have Jabiim turned out, if Obi Wan and Alpha had stayed at their posts instead of personally risking their lives in a very stupid RESCUE attempt.

I'd say Grievous was the best general because he understood the power of terrifying one's enemy, which is especially important if one is the underdog as the Seppies were.

It's really a shame that the only flag-officers we really see in this period are Jedi or Greivous. I want to see the exploits of a Republic sector army fighting on the front lines, commanded by a normal, non-Force sensitive guy.

Obi Wan wasn't fanwanked. It's flat out shown that the key posts were taken by Obi Wan Kenobi and that many of the greatest victories of the war were achieved by Obi Wan. He and Anakin are THE heroes.

    ROTS Novelization says as much.

He's also one of the few Jedi with military experience prior.

Obi-Wan seemed to be a great general from all of his appearances as did Grievous. However, we really didn't see anyone else.

Kit Fisto proved his worth on a number of missions (Mon Calamari, Ord Cestus, et al). And his lightwhip was pure ginch, which is of course the reason he's listed first.

Likewise, I'm very interested in seeing how Etain Tur-Mukan develops as a true Jedi general in Karen's future novels. Much potential for greatness there, assuming she deals with a few things from the first book -- she's got more issues than a magazine stand. (That's a good thing, though.)

Roan Shryne was a reasonably competent field commander, although loath to listen to the (oftentimes correct) contrary advice of the clone troopers under his leadership. T'ra S'aa's been around the block a few times, and undoubtedly had the chops to excel on the battlefield, considering her age.

Concurred. Even during the Clone Wars alone, by the end, the guy had more than earned his stripes in terms of his battle-record, and going by the JA books, had far more "real world" exposure under his belt than about any ten other given Padawans in the temple.

Tyneir Renz would be another of Kenobi's ilk, despite technically not holding a proper generalship; very likely this was corrected by the High Council's edict a few weeks post-Geonosis.

Greatest Jedi General of all, though?

    Shon Kon Ray.

Anakin Skywalker of course because the whole Gaxley told storys about him and some said that he was just a bed time story to fight off your fears of the War. He had also faught more battles then any other Jedi and he was on mission for the jedi only, sometimes just for the Chanceller, and at times both.

He is one of a kind Legendary Jedi.

Edit: Obi-wan would come in second thou.

From what we saw he's too impulsive to be a good general.

    Disagreed.

Anakin's impulsiveness is actually just when his buttons are pushed. Sandpeople, People who look like his mom, Padme, and Obi Wan are those buttons. When those are left out of the equation (like with his mother) Anakin's gut instincts are correct.

He was RIGHT to go after and eliminate Ventress in the Clone Wars and his going off alone found the secret tunnel that took out the shields for the city in season 2. He also commanded the air victory at Muulinst

The Battles of Aargonar, Balamak, Rendili, Praesitlyn, and Virujansi were won almost entirely thanks to Anakin's strategy and tactics. He also led successful attacks on the Neimoidian purseworlds, the CIS navy above Muunilinst, and the CWCIII rainworld.

Jan Dodonna actually had a cameo in LoE.
And given his reputation during the GCW, I'd say he probably was good at his job.
And MGK, Thrawn wasn't in the Clone Wars.

Mara's toupee collection that cyborg clown was a renoun general! How can you coordinate your strike forces whilst killing feeble wizards on the ground, thousands of klicks away? Soneone is up in orbit doing that for you, and you know it.

    Rancisis is another matter.

I 'unno. Maybe he had radio transmitters that allowed him to continually communicate with his droid captains?
With Coruscant specifically, the massive assault was more of a "Lookit us! Grr! We're mean!"
While Grievous the Warrior/General went in with his posse and took Palpatine. Not much to lead beyond "cause a lot of hell down there"
But hell, I've never commanded an army beyond Axis and Allies so I don't know a damn thing about this! :p

My vote goes with Shon Kon Ray, even though he did die and we haven't seen him for more than a couple pages. [face_mischief]

Anyone want to take bets whether he's Corellia Antilles' father? ;)

I agree, I would have liked to have seen some non-Force sensitive Republic human Generals / Admirals / Commanders. I feel that this is a HUGELY missed opportunity, because these human military leaders would have gone on to have been the military leaders of the New Order.

I consider this to be part of the Clone Wars era, just because it was a battle against the army the clones were in a war with. Now don't laugh here.....

    Boss Nass

His primitve army did not stand a chance. However, he led his troops heroically (knowing that many would die) and played a very crucial role in the liberation of Naboo. He lured them in, faught their type of battle, held out as long as he needed to, and issued a well timed retreat, which would serve only to draw the droid army's farther from the capital. If "Weesa not ready to do Arsa part", Amidala's little insurgence would have went poorly.

Actually, the general for the Gungans in TPM was Jar-Jar Binks. Remember Boss Nass' comment about "We make you bombad general" or something along those lines?

Edit: And, although I can't tell you the fate of Boss Nass, we all know what many people wish would be the final fate of Jar-Jar (myself not included).

    1. Obi-Wan Kenobi (ROTS novelization - people expect him and Anakin to save the day, whole Coruscant is expecting their arrival at the battle scene; and he is send to take down the Jedi Killer number 1 General Grievous! )

    2. Mace Windu (just watch Clone Wars Volume 1 :D )

    3. Aayla Secura (BF 2 - the narrator comments on Aayla beeing a very skillfull general in the war, having a good comeradeship with her subordinates)

Concerning the CIS, there are not many to choose from, but Grievous will surely be remembered as the most cruel war-master in this war, devastating dozents of worlds.
