Nute Gunray is one of my favorites of the PT, but it seems like most of the people that post here hate his guts. Even though he's an tool for the most part, I thought he was one of the coolest characters of the PT and I hated seeing him meet his grissly end in Episode III. They said at one ofthe press screening, people actually cheered when Anakin struck him down.

I guess I must be one of the eleven people that like Gunray on here.

Mostly because his character was a real idiot. He trusted the Sith, got betrayed, and then trusted them again ... and he was set out to kill Padmé. I think that the concept of his character was great: a bumbling idiot who gets tricked by the Sith. The reason people don't like him is because of what he does.

Sort of like Darth Vader ;)

I think Nute was great; but as was pointed out in the RotS thread, i would've very much welcomed even more Nute. TPM could've shaved off minutes off the podrace or the underwater chase which could've been spent on either expanding on the Sith, Jedi or Nute Gunray. All fractions that i feel would've improved not only TPM but the prequels more.

George went for the simple "Nute's a dumb greedy SOB angle" and never explores on it (like he does with Anakin) when he could've easily done this in TPM, even garner a little understanding and perhaps sympathy for the fool. I'm not asking for a grand epic treatment like Anakin, but just a little suttin suttin on the side would've elevated him from great to brilliant to me.

I really would have liked to have a little more Nute in Episode I.

Definitely, either the Sith or the Neimodians should've had more attention imo. The Jedi also, but i'm able to look past that because Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan....well, they kick ass.

The hatred of Nute shows, to me, how good of a character he was. He's one of my top ten favorite characters from the GFFA. A good villian should be hated, no? He should do the kind of ugly, dirty things so that an audience wanting good to suceed should cheer (or want to) when he is struck dead.

Granted, Nute's character could have been more developed. I would have liked to have known how exactly Nute got caught up with the Sith, and what exactly Sidious told him (I mean, come on, he didn't even know there were gonna be two sith! Even Yoda knew that!).

Which still makes him slightly smarter than Padme. :p

While I wouldn't put him on my list of favorites, I think he succeeds in the role of bumbling fool much more effectively than a certain Gungan.

I just love Nute. He's the perfect bad guy for TPM, and it's fun watching him get increasingly marginalised in AOTC and ROTS.

If you like Nute, I recommend reading 'Cloak of Deception', the only good bit of EU I've ever stumbled upon.

Nute was my favourite PT character. Even though we dont find out much about why he served Darth Sidious in the first place, he was developed a lot better than some of the other characters in the saga. And I dont think the point about him being an idiot really stands, as he wasnt. He served Sidious in the first place(according to EU)because the deal was 'forced' upon him, and he served Sidious faithfully in the hopes of being rewarded, which any good business man would do. And he conducted the invasion of Naboo very quickly, within about two days securing the entire planet, and occupying a city is bloody difficult, so his organisational skills must have been excellent(unlike I might point out, Darth Vader, who never had ONE success in the OT). And its implied from the EU material in Labirynth of evil, that Nute only found out Sidious was behind the seperatists after the war had begun, therefore leaving him no options and forcing him to serve Sidious once more. Just look at hi when Sidious tells him the end of the war has come, he doesnt really say anything, not even a 'yes my lord' he just switches the hologram off, almost as if he doesnt care anymore what Sidious has to say.

He's no idiot, he was forced into working with the sith, just as Anakin was, he was decieved by Sidious just as Yoda and every single Jedi in the universe was.

I thought that he and his species had such a good design.

I don't love or hate him, he's just there, he just serves his prupose, which is what he was meant to do.

    Well done Nute

I like the Viceroy and the other Nemodians I think they are great, and think they are very well made. They are quite good "villians" and I have at laugh at them at same time
Fav Gunray line AOTC "She can't do that, shoot her or something!!"

I thought Nute was kinda funny in TPM and AOTC.

He's an idiot, and he's greedy and selfish, but I definatly felt sorry for him in ROTS - The way he was killed by Anakin after begging for his life was shocking and brutal. It was an execution, and for all the wrong Nute had done he didn't deserve to be killed like that.

Hatred because his name is a conflation of Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan, two people that Lucas didn't care for and his greed and selfishness is supposed to reflect theirs. He is the least subtle political snipe in Lucas's entire ouvre. So we are supposed to hate him and all he stands for. And this time, I agree with uncle George.

Political statements aside, I don't think he was really an idiot, but someone who got stuck in a situation he didn't like and couldn't really get out of. How do you go about getting out of a deal with a sith lord? I'm sure he knew that Sidious wouldn't just let him go and do nothing. So he had to go along with him and hope for the best. In addition, being head of the Trade Federation and therefore a businessman, he was sort of out of his element in having to deal with war and invasions and such. So Sidious brought in Dooku and Grevious to prop him up. But ultimately, I think that idiot is too harsh of a term. He was a great villian for the PT. I also liked how at the end of ROTS, he seems to have had it with Sidious and the entire Clone Wars.

I couldn't agree more. When I saw TPM for the first time, I didn't really care about him. He was a disposable villain... it was obvious he was gonna get the axe. It was in AOTC that I started to realize there was more to his character than it originally appeared, and I attempted to psych him out.

After reading Labyrinth of Evil his character fell completely into place; as Dooku so aptly put it, he was a victim, not a villain.

Sure as heck he was a greedy SOB, but he got to be that way somehow, and since the entire galaxy had soemthing against Neimoidians, there was really no way he could have become anything otherwise.

I felt sorry for Nute when he was pleading for his life in ROTS right before Anakin kills him. It really sounded like he just wanted to go home.

    I couldn't agree more.

If a dark figure came into the control room and began slaughtering everyone whom I worked with, I would want to go home too, and then I would probably rethink my life.

=D= I'm not saying he's the world's greatest character, but come on. He's just plain dumb, IMO. I thought he was pretty funny. Was he the one who said this? "I need her head on my desk..." Becase if he did than =D= =D=

Also, was he the one who was pleading with Anakin/Vader not to kill him?
