the obvious inspiration for this name is the spanish word "camino", which means "king".

why name an ocean planet with cloners on it "Kamino"?

I have always thought GEONOSIS would have been
a better name (GEONOSIS/GENESIS), but that would
be too easy. Didn't know KAMI meant God. Hmmmm.

Hey, I never noticed the similarity between Geonosis and Genesis. I always thought it was kind of a weird name for a Star Wars planet, though, so it had to mean something. Now I know what: Geonosis is the genesis of the Clone Wars.

Geonosis is the genesis of the Clone Wars

That's probably the correct analysis, yes.

I always thought Camino meant "half pickup truck-half station wagon from the 70's".

Camino is Spanish for road. It could also mean "I walk".

Lucas named the planet this because he is a racist! A no good racist! :)

Just kidding. Some people overanalyze things and are too sensitve these days.

Camino is a derivative of the verb "caminar."

When it functions as a verb, it is the "yo" (or "I") conjegation of the present tense. Thus, "I walk."

When it functions as a noun, it is "el camino" or "the path/the road."

Neither of these has anything to do with royalty. Those sort of titles might be:

    el caballero- knight
el noble- I shouldn't need to tell you this one. The pronunciation is just different.
    el rey- king
    la reina- queen
la monarquia (with accented i)- monarchy as a concept or system of government.

None of these have anything to do with the word camino. Therefore, this thread is kind of pointless. Unless there's some connection between cloning and either actual translation of the word that I'm missing.

i've buzzed it through a japanese dict and it confirms it

    kami is japanese for god

kamino is japanese for divine love or divine gift

so you could say the kaminoans are acting like god, creating human beings. to the republic the army is like a gift, a divine gift

also, Lama in japanese is Rama which is the Dalai Lama.

su means wind pasing, and kamino is a windy place

that's about all i could come up with, remember SW has a lot of japanese influences.

EDIT: Took out the japanese characters as they didn't come up :(

Kamikaze is "divine wind". The character for kami can also be pronounced "shin", as in Shinto, the way of the Gods. Kaze can also be pronounced as "fu", depending on the reading. Camino means "i walk" but if you accent the o then the meaning becomes "he walked/she walked".

It's the planet of the Gods. They can create life.
And they are rich like kings.

    Just guessing.

ElCamino is a street name. One of which Lucas obviously got the idea from driving home.

    why call it "kamino"?

Because "City on the Edge of Forever" was already taken.

Has anyone considered the possibility that the planet is called Kamino simply because it sounds cool?

Naw. Everything in Star Wars just has to have some double meaning. [face_plain]

does Camino mean Path in Spanish?

If it does it would be an akward coincidence in a book I read recently there was a planet called Path. The people who lived there beleived the Gods were speaking to wealthy and powerful people but it turns out to be only a disease left by scientists of long ago to keep these people from taking over the Earth colonies or something.

Yes, when used as a noun, that's an acceptable translation. "Path," "road," "walkway," what have you.

Camino simply means "walk", but if you use the article "el" before it, then it becomes "the path". I'm not sure if it means a long or short path. Here in Houston there is an "El Camino Real". If that is short for Realizado, then it means "the revealed/true road".

Actually, the verb realizar does not mean "revealed/true." It means "to realize/actualize."

As in, "Will the US ever realize Dr Martin Luther King's dream of race relations?" Or, "After many months of hard work, Ruben Studdard's dream of becoming a singer was finally realized on American Idol."

(Despues de muchos meses de trabajo duro, el sueno del Sr Studdard fue finalmente realizado por el Idol Americano.) Unfortunately, I can't put proper accent markings on that. But yeah. Although, I'm fairly confident that "real" is not related in any way to realizado, the present perfect tense of realizar.

Also, el camino is simply as was said, "the path." An adjective would be required to imply that it was long or short. I think what was happening is that they were discussing a specific street in California called "El Camino Real."

And btw, I looked it up in my dictionary, and real is not in fact related to realizar. It means "real" or "royal." Having figured out the biggest question of the thread, though, it's really irrelevant since the planet's called "Kamino" and not "Real."
