obi-wan defeated anakin and anakin defeated count dooku, so why couldnt obi-wan defeat dooku ? or maybe anakin was in the way and 1-on-1 it would be in favor of obi...? trying to find sense here... it felt too convenient.
Actually "Obi-Wan defeats Anakin, Anakin defeats Dooku, Dooku defeats Obi-Wan" is a lot more like rock-paper-scissors than "Obi-Wan always defeats both Anakin and Dooku" would be.
but i didnt paraphrased it as rock paper scissors. i paraphrased it as if one beats one, he should be able to beat the weaker. duelling skill usually is measured by winner of a duel, according to the dueling history of the characters, obi-wan should be higher on the pyramid.
No, because there are many factors at play: power, skill, self-control, etc. It's not strong vs weak.
Dooku was definitely more powerful than Anakin and Obi-Wan in the beginning of ROTS. But when Anakin used the Dark Side he powered up. By the end of ROTS, Obi-Wan powered up also on same level of Vader and Tyranus. Obi-Wan at that point could have beaten Tyranus if they would have fought at that moment. Or Dooku wouldn’t have been able to route him easily like he did in the beginning of ROTS. All 3 has a chance to beat each other.
In his fight against Dooku, I believe Anakin had used his anger to defeat the older man and his emotions were not completely out of control. In his fight against Obi-Wan, I believe Anakin's emotions were out of control.
Obi-Wan had the greatest fight of his life that day against Darth Vader (formerly Anakin). Obi-Wan was 100% on his A+ game. Anakin brought all his power and skill but Obi-Wan could block and counter all his moves. Part of that was how well he knew Anakin. Also the Force was with Obi-Wan. It was close fight the entire 22 minutes it was on screen. In the end it’s Darth Vader underestimating Obi-Wan and over estimating himself that caused his loss.
Styles makes fights as they say , Dooku was way more experienced in all styles of fighting as a former Jedi and being Qui-Gons master, he knew Obi-wan style and Kenobi couldnt do much against him.
I still believe Anakin's emotions were out of whack and Obi-Wan, quite rightly, took advantage of the situation. And yet, despite all of his advantages, Obi-Wan still had great difficulty in defeating an emotionally out of control Anakin. If he had faced a cooler Anakin . . . who knows what would have happened.
The transitive property (if A > B, and B > C, then A > C) does not apply to fighting. There have been many, many examples of the transitive property not working in real life fighting. As Dr Silva said, styles make fights. The differences between individuals make a difference in each fight. One may be a better match for one than others. A quick bit of analysis: Dooku's style seems to be finesse and precision, Obi-Wan's style is defense, and Anakin's is raw power. Dooku's precise and subtle fencing was able to penetrate Obi-Wan's defenses. Anakin's raw power was not able to penetrate Obi-Wan's defenses. Others have mentioned Anakin's lack of emotional control and his arrogance. There is Obi-Wan's high ground advantage (lol). Anakin probably would be a higher ranked fighter than Obi-Wan, but upsets happen. There's also the Force to consider; Obi-Wan may have been fated to defeat Anakin.
I'm not sure if it works the same with Force powered individuals, but in real life fights/duels/matches, it's mental game as well as a physical contest. It's psychology. Dooku has Obi-Wans' number in this regard.
