According to Wookiepedia, Panaka became a Moff under Palpatine. However, in TPM, he was nearly killed numerous times for Palpatine's charades. Why stay with a man that played with you so much? At least Vader had his reasons.

I love that Panaka became a Moff. Didn't know that.

I doubt he knew just how extensive Palp's involvement in the blockade at Naboo really was.

He's just another one of the masses, much like most of the Senate, that liked Palpatine's rule and probably welcomed the Empire at first.

It would be interesting to know, since the entry on wookiee just seems to stop with no true ending.

Why wouldn't he? It's not like Panaka had any reason to know anything about Palpatine's manipulations. Palpatine was a good man, a Naboo senator who helped clean up the corruption of the Senate and bring order, right? Who wouldn't back that? How would he know that a Sith Lord named Darth Sidious set up the invasion of Naboo and also happened to be Palpatine?

The fact the two looked alike, and one was wanted by the Jedi and the government for leading the CIS? The fact that one of them got Gunray off the hook. He even told Palpatine about Anakin's marriage to Padme, and the one novel seemed to suggest he knew more.

Since when does the average joe know what Darth Sidious looks like?

The only people who ever saw him were a bunch of CIS aliens, who probably couldn't tell most humans apart easily anyway, and Darth Vader.

Well, yeah, but it's still goes to my point.

Panaka: "Wait...Palpatine looks just like SOME GUY I'VE NEVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!"

That's because he has no true ending. Can't write about what doesn't exist.

Since the holochair Gunray used was captured and the Senate was informed. Palpatine made a mention in the ROTS novel about Sidious being mentioned in the Holonet. It's only logical, if they could bring up a picture of Sidious on the hologram, and then the same looking guy is standing before you with the same voice when the Empire is declared, and then the guy has a Sith working for him, it's easy to put two and two together.

Yeah, and when Clark Kent covered the story on the HoloNet, I was totally like, um, Hello? That's Superman under those glasses! but no one would believe me.

Seriously, why are we asking Panaka to have put something together that the CIS leadership never put together in fifteen years? Hell, Clark Kent had things harder than Palps. Almost no one knew that there were Sith involved, fewer people had heard the name Darth Sidious, even fewer knew what he looked like and those people were all killed shortly thereafter.

And the Senate itself was informed, but they didn't recognize the guy who they look at every day? If a Senate of literally THOUSANDS of people couldn't recognize their Chancellor under that hood, why would a security officer who has probably only seen Palpy a handful of times in his life recognize him?

And unlike Kent, whose "Superhypnotism" ([face_laugh]) was retconned away, Palps could conceivably still be doing that.

I mean, Kreia walked about without anyone realising "hey, it's you!" until she wanted them to. I'm pretty sure anything Traya can do, Sidious can do better.

Though I don't think he'd need to use any special abilities to conceal his identity overmuch, for the reasons already elaborated upon.

True...but that "cloud of the darkside" thing might play some role, even if only redundant, in masking Sidious.

Honestly...remember though we know quite easily...it wasn't so in universe.

Palps "did" mask his voice somewhat between identities...we can hear right through it...but there is a tonal change that could throw off anyone without prior knowledge.

and the hoody has been covered.

There is something too loyalty...and their is something to having a dude from your hometown(world) being the most powerful figure in the universe.

I mean Panaka was nothing but stupid grins when Palps was NOMINATED for Chancellor...imagine the declaration of the Empire!

I can see Panaka being swept up in it all.

Now the question becomes...does the office of Moff corrupt Panaka into a dislikeable character...or does he become an "Imperial with reservations" about what is going on?

At this stage, I don't suspect Panaka will fall into the "Moff=petty evil incarnate" cliche. But then...who knows if the character will ever get another mention.

I mean how bad can he be? He bought Palpatine something to decorate his office with.

I don't recall if he was Emperor or just Chancellor.

Do we know Panaka made his gift when Palps was Emperor?

I'm pretty sure we were, but now I'm doubting it. The book says he received it from Moff Panaka, not Captain Panaka, and it's sitting in the Emperor's private quarters on the Death Star II, so...I mean I guess it's ambiguous, but I'm leaning towards it being post New Order.

I don't know whether I prefer the idea of him serving the New Republic or running away with the Remnant better...

...and what did Typho think about all this?
