After the first Death Star was destroyed, why did the Rebels stay for such a long time? I seem to remember that they stayed for six months.

At first glance, it seems like they should have fled within a week. What am I missing? What kept them on Yavin-4?

I can't figure taht one out either, my only guess is that the Empire wanted to make a big show of killing off the Rebellion with the Executer and had, for the most part blockaded Yavin.(I vagually remember two lines about a blockad in the old comic strips.

I don't think they stayed that long. If they did, it was probably because the Imperials didn't have anything near Yavin to take control of it. Or they could have just blockaded it...

From what I remember they were there pretty much just as long as it took the Executer to be designed, and made.

The Executor was nearing completition when the Battle of Yavin took place, IIRC.

Well, according to the Essential Chronology, the Executor was indeed nearing completition.

    (Rebel Trap)
The Rebel started evacuating the day after the victory, and they successfully removed all the heavy equipment. However, the Empire arrived before the key personal could evacuate, creating a blockade of the system.

    (Imperial Counterstrike)
Six months after the Battle, the Executor was finished and attacked Yavin.

For more details, check the EC if you have it, or browse TimeTales (link at the top of the page).

The way I see it, it took at least a month before the Empire even knew of the Death Star's destruction/the location of Yavin IV...figure a week or two for Vader to crawl back to occupied space, a week or so for Vader's Quest and the events surrunding it to take place, then a couple more weeks until Vader gives word to the Emperor and the fleet can fly out to Yavin to begin the blockade.

So that leaves five months to wonder. By then they probably had the idea of using Executor to finish the rebels off, so as to make the loss of the Death Star seem insignificant. I'm guessing the arrival of Mon Cal forces at some point might account for at least some of the rebel stay.

It took Vader more than a month to get back to the Imperials (see Scoundrel's Luck). After that, he spent weeks attempting to discover the identity of the one who destroyed the Death Star, and or find the identity of Obi-Wan's disciple (turns out they were one and the same: Luke Skywalker).

Several reasons why the Rebels stuck around on Yavin IV for so long:

    a) Governor Vellam, an Imperial in control of the Bright Jewel cluster (where Yavin is) had his command revoked by Palpatine, following the Battle of Yavin. Someone had to take the blame for the disaster of the death star. The Governor did not return to Coruscant though, and he fortified his position. The Rebels were both trapped by Vellam, and protected from the Imperials by him. He effectively kept the Rebels in, and the Imperials out.

    B) Imperial blockades kept the Rebels in the system as well, keeping them from releasing an all out evacuation, and forcing them to only evacuate a few ships at a time (High Command escaped first). This blockade got tighter and tighter, until the Imperials took Blitzkrieg tactics and started bombarding the Massassi temples on Yavin.

Boy, that's really interesting, Mavrick. It would be really cool if someone posted a sort of *Yavin to Endor* Timeline covering all this stuff. ;) :p

Gosh, though, that kinda sucks that we both have one, and both research a lot for it, but we're both bound to be wrong on various things when we compare them. :_|

Remember, the Imps also allowed the Tagge family to harass the Rebels as well. There was that Tagge facility buried in gas giant Yavin, which based Imperial TIE patrols which would routinely antagonize the Rebels/Rebel base.
