yea I know he opened the door with a force throw (which IMO was the most badazz thing I had seen in film). But you think he could have used the force more.

Darth Maul will go down as a very underappreciated villian.

He did have enough Force power to kill Qui-Gon. I think this duel was intended to show off swordplay as opposed to Force tricks.

If you think about it, he could have Force choked Qui-gon while he was meditating, since he lowered his defenses and averted his eyes from his opponent. Either that or he could have opened the laser gates with the Force as well.

Maul didn't want to be cheap; he wanted to prove himself in lightsaber combat with the Jedi.

Then why'd he Force push Obi-wan down a pit and toss away his lightsaber?

    He was baiting him.

With Obi-wan losing focus due to his anger over Qui-Gon's death, Maul took advantage of that thus using the Force push to knock Obi-wan into the pit.

cuz when you train all your life to battle two enemies at once with lightsabers, you use lightsabers.

Notice that nobody seems to use Force powers in duels much. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan certainly weren't. Dooku used them sparingly, Obi-Wan and Vader in ANH didn't, Vader & Luke used them sparingly in TESB, and Vader & Luke didn't use them much at all in ROTJ.

It's dangerous, I think. Tires you out faster, maybe.

In the novel, he actually uses the force more during the duel.

Too much Force use can lead to the Dark side...

    Dooku used them sparingly

He used lightning to incapacitate Anakin, tried it on Obi-wan AND Yoda, and then turned to dueling AFTER he saw he couldn't win with the Force. He relied on them extensively, even to the point of using the Force for a cheap escape; how is that "sparingly?"

He was using the Force constantly during the duel. He needs it to anticipate his oppenent's moves and to make his attacks at just the right time. He doesn't have time during the duel to stop and use random Force attacks, because its a very fast paced duel.

!) Jedi and Sith use the Force whilst fighting. It's part of their normal fighting tactic.

    2) You cannot use the Force endlessly. Eventually, you'll get completely tired out.

It would be wasteful and pointless for him to flaunt the Force during the duel. He was taking on two opponents, any more strain would have tired him out more quickly.

Dudes. Dudes. He's using the force all the time. To make judgements, control reactions etc etc. Using the force isnt just about amazing powers. Its about controlling that darn lightsabre. Anticipating things. Making judgements over your enemies. And i think trying to use choking force powers on some other force user would be meaningless. Its just telekinesis on the ol' wind pipe - something another force use would counter - therefore pointless. You'll notice the force pushes only happen when ones guard and attentions are awry...
hang on,.... too serious - i've got a life..... evil star wars -- evil.

Duh! It was not in the screenplay that way! But seriously folks: Though Darth Maul was Sith, and in tune with the force to an extent that none of us could understand, he was still human (or something like that). Therefore he had emotions, and they were his undoing. He became cockey and overconfident. As a previous poster noted, he used the force throughout his duel with Jin-san and Kenobi-san (whether with his light-saber or using his thoughts to control the force and move his opponents). He felt that Kenobi-san was too weak to defeat him (Maul) and therefore was strutting over him like a Miami University defensive back after a big hit. He never expected Kenobi-san to be able to defeat him, nor retrive Jin-san's light-saber. by the time he realized his mistake, the top half of his torso was already tumbling down the shaft.

    peace

Are you asking why Maul didn't try to Force choke a Jedi Master?
I'll let you guys figure out for yourselves why the Jedi/Sith don't use many Force tricks while duelling others with the same powers.

Right, they'd either kill each other at hte same time, or cancel out each other's attack and end up wasting energy.

First off, Force powers don't seem to be very effective against other seasoned Force-users (see also, AOTC duels).

Secondly, why would he just use the Force more? Whne he started fighting, his purpose was to win by killing the Jedi. Not to impress people in theaters by going through a bunch of unneccessary magic tricks. You may as well ask why any Jedi in the Saga doesn't use their Force powers more often. It's not necessary.

Plus it's kinda overkill. If you can defeat someone using a lightsaber, why go for the Force? Unless you're showing off, which is a different story altogether. Anyway, with two opponents, Maul wouldn't have time to concentrate on knocking them around with the power of his mind, not unless he wanted to drop his guard.

And when Qui-Gon was meditating, you'd think that he would be able to easily counter any Force attacks.
