if we set aside the whole fact that using dual blades for the very end of the movies made it much more intense, why didn't maul use both blades against quigon on tatooine? doesn't maul want the upper hand, and if he has it then why not do even more to garuntee his sucess in killing quigon?

also, why didnt obiwan go help quigon? he can't even use force speed to get past the theed generator energy walls.

At the end of the movie, Maul is fighting against 2 people, not 1 individual only. Maul only needed 1 blade when fighting QGJ on Tatooine. Besides if Maul had killed QGJ on Tatooine, OB1 probably would have sent Anakin back to his mother and that would have ended the story!

Because Maul was doing quite well with just one blade. Plus, it's a bit of a suprise for people who banished themselves from society and therefore didn't know about the twin-blade aspect of Maul's staff.

He could be only trying to prove a point there to that he can fight plus I think his real target is the queen.

"why didn't maul go full out on quigon?"

Because its a movie and that short fight scene is a teaser for the ending.

Aside from the post above me, I can think of two good reasons:

    (1) Maul was wearing a thick cloak, and it was windy, so him weilding a double-bladed lightsaber would have been more dangerous to himself at that particular time than his opponent.

    (2) It's clear that Maul likes to show off his skills; I think he wanted to take out Qui-Gon with a fair match to prove to himself and Sidious he was better if he had won.

Maul only uses both blades on Naboo because he's fighting two people. Even as much as he clearly likes to show off, I'm sure he is aware of the fact that a double bladed weapon, while impressive, is more dangerous to the user and not nearly as practical as a single blade. Especially not on sand dunes where you aren't assured of your footing. He's cocky, but he's not quite stupid.

also, why didnt obiwan go help quigon? he can't even use force speed to get past the theed generator energy walls.

Ouch. That's cold. I think if you'd been fighting with someone for that long, been kicked in the head twice already, and made two Force jumps (we see one, but if you watch the fight you'll notice that between cuts they've all moved up a level, so they would have had to Force jump), you might be a little too tired to use Force Speed as well. I'm pretty sure Obi-Wan regrets that and feels horrible about not being able to help Qui-Gon, though, wouldn't you think? But there's no use beating yourself up over something you couldn't help.

It's just like in AotC when Dooku takes Obi-Wan down. Everyone complains that Obi-Wan was just being weak, but Dooku hadn't been fighting various creatures and droids in an arena for who knows how long before this.

I always thought it was a mistake that they showed the double bladed saber in the trailers. If they wanted to show parts of the duel they should have just shown closeups and the latter parts of the Obi-Wan/Maul showdown.

The answer to the question lies in the lightsaber itself. Look at the other end in the close-up shot.

Oh, and let's watch the language. Thanks.

Well, besides the fact that Obi-Wan had just been dueling, had fallen from a great height, been kicked in the head, and was probably exhausted, there is the fact that he doesn't know when the energy shields are going to close, and therefore would have to approach them with caution. I mean, running full out through there would not be good if the shields suddenly turned on.

Darth Maul didn't go right to Qui-Gon because he wanted to get the strongest of the 2 Jedi out, which was Obi-Wan.

It makes the Duel Of The Fates more special this way. Simple as that, I guess.
