Why didn't Obi-Wan & Yoda train Luke & Leia from childhood?

Why didn't they? My guess is because they thought Palpatine & Vader would track the four of them [Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke, Leia] down if they sensed a force-trained Luke & Leia. In ESB, isn't it right after Luke goes to Dagobah that the Emperor senses a disturbance in the force? Training Luke &/or Leia from childhood would have given Palpatine & Vader about twenty years to hunt them down, instead of the relatively short amount of time Luke spends on Dagobah.

That's my [present] take on it. What do you guys think?

I think Obi-wan treid, but Owen wouldnt let him.

That why Owen dosent like Obi-wan and explaines why Obi says 'your uncle wouldnt allow it' when he talks about Anakin's saber.

Owen didnt want Luke turning out like Anakin did.

Why doesn't he just raise Luke himself? Owen and Beru probably didn't even know Padme was pregnant, or even that Anakin and she were married.

Also, why does Obi-Wan watch over Luke, but Yoda does no such thing for Leia? Don't two trained Jedi have a better chance to beat the Empire than one?

Because Obi-Wan had to learn a few new tricks himself. Yoda also has to do this. They can't teach two new Jedi the new ways of Qui-Gon without knowing them themselves first.

That's why Obi-Wan left Luke with the Larses(?) and Yoda stayed put on Dagobah. The long-term plan was probably to first train Luke when he reached the right age and then bring him to Yoda for final training under both Obi-Wan's and Yoda's watchful eyes and when he was trained, have him help them with Leia.

Did you guys not pay attention at the end of the film? Yoda decided to start a new method of training and started to show some faith in the living force. Let the children grow up with a loving family and when the time was right the Force would set the twins on their paths which lead to them on to more or less follow in their parents footsteps.

For a more detailed explaination on Yoda's methods, read the ROTS novel.

Vader suspects something is off when he is chasing Luke in ANH and he hasnt been trained long, he can also feel him in ROTJ so if L*L were trained from birth then Vader would have found them by the time they were 5 and then he'd raise them as sith, if Palps didnt demand one of them die. Obi and Yoda have to do this on the DL; I dont know why Yoda doesnt go to Alderran to watch over Leia. Some form of an explanation could be that Alderran is to involved with the empire and 2 strong force prescence(sp) could have been detected. Tattoine is so far from the war and the rest of the galaxy that Obi and Luke wont be detected.

Actually, I think Obi-Wan thought that if Vader did happen to find him, he wouldn't have found Luke with him.

First of all, Obi-Wan is single and I suppose since he never lived in a real family, he wouldn't be much of a good father-figure. Just check what became of Anakin.
2nd, he wouldn't dare touch and train another Skywalker, since he admitted to have failed with Anakin.

Are we sure that Obiwan and Yoda had a set timeframe of when to train the young Skywalker's.

It did seem like ObiWan had some plan when he handed him the saber, but when would he have, they don't like to train adults, it seems much more difficult. Also Yoda dies during Luke's training, or after completely training Luke. It seems like if Vader didn't capture his daughter (did He sense her, he certainly didn't mind tortuting her) then Leia send R2 to Luke and Obiwan at that precise time, then Yoda wouldn't have been alive to train Luke, unless training Luke was his last need and then he passed. Also to make Luke stronger through Death.

I believe they just let the cards play out, and they did favorably. Both Jedi Masters died during Luke's training.

He called before he showed up. It's seemed obvious to me that she was waiting for him to ride up and drop off young Luke.

Here is something else to remember: pressure. Look how Anakin buckled under the pressure of being the chosen. For the past 10 years he has had the cloud of being the 'chosen one' hanging over him. He was not able to handle this.

Now flash forward, how would Anakin's children be able to handle the pressure of saving the galaxy from the Evil Emperor? Redeeming their father? Instead Luke grew up as a modest farmer. He grew up in a loving family with images of his father. From these images he loved his father, a love that would save his father.

I like it, GhostHand. Especially the last two sentences.

And if Luke hadn't loved his father, he likely would have killed him in anger at the end of ROTJ and been that much closer to the dark side.

well the rots novel says yoda told obi-wan the force should guide them to them at the right time. this seems as good a reason as any.

I think you answered your own question. Luke's growing force-strength in ESB blew his cover. Couldn't risk that before the events of ANH, as too much was at stake. Yoda and Obi-Wan knew that only Vader's children would have hope in taking down or turing him.

Thats a little unfair to Obi-Wan I think. It is not Obi-Wans fault that Anakin turned to the Dark Side. Anakin was being manipulated by a Sith master for over a decade, its amazing he lasted as long as he did. If Anakin hadn't been subject to dark side manipulation, and had only Jedi influencing him, he would have turned out just fine. Maybe a little impatient at times, but, hardly a failure from a training standpoint. I think Obi-Wan blames himself too much for Anakin, most Jedi with padawans don't really have to deal with their padawan being secretly seduced by their single greatest enemy. Hell, Yoda trained Dooku, who turned to the dark side, and Yoda doesn't spend the rest of his life beating himself up for it. Obi-Wan just takes it too personally. Obi did the best any Jedi could do.

My guess is that there are a few factors as to why they waited.

1.If they started luke and leia as kids, Vader or the Emperor would have noticed and killed them or turned them.

2.Ben and Yoda were always going to try in my mind, one last time to take out vader and the Emperor. They wouldn't just die without trying and couldnt do it without new blood because they had both failed already.

3.Ben Probably spent his time alone watching luke to protect him from a far. He had to focus to learn how to talk through the force after he died. That was almost as important as giving luke the lightsaber and starting his training. If Ben couldn't talk through the force after he died, lukes training would have been tougher for luke and yoda, if ben couldnt be there for his input.

    4. Luke was probably always their main target to take Vader out. Leia was in a high profile spot (daughter of a senator) and might have been noticed if she was missing for awhile with out much of a fuss. A farmboy from tatooine wouldnt have been missed much.

this along with the pressure of knowing you have to save the world from your evil father at a young age would really weigh on somebody throughout their childhood and keep luke from turning vader back. I think ben and yoda learned a lesson from the sith here about waiting and how it can be a good tool to have surprise on your side.

rumsmuggler is right. Remember the jedi of the PT had become arrogant because of their powers (see Anakin) and no longer had the respect of the force that they once did. They used the force as more of a tool. And a Jedi who did have this respect (Qui-Gon) was labeled a maverick. By ROTS, Yoda and Obi-Wan learned this, and decided that they needed to trust the force. In addition, Luke and Leia wouldn't see the force as just a tool, and would also have a greater respect for it.

As others have mentioned above, it's explained in the RotS novel. Yoda realizes that part of the reason why the jedi have been defeated by the Sith is because while the Sith have changed and adapted, the jedi have been rigid and unchanging for at least 1000 years. So he decided that rather than training Luke and Leia from early childhood, they should wait until "the Force brought the twins to them for training", or something like that. And as we saw, events did eventually transpire to bring Luke under Obi-wan's tuteledge.
