Why didn't the Battle droids drive the tanks through the shields?

In the grass battle at the end of TPM, the battle droids simply march through the shields that the Gungans are using.

Why didn't they simply drive the tanks through, also?

 

They had enough droids, why risk the tanks?

The knew the gungans had energy balls and losing a battle droid was a little better then losing a tank, and because they had superior numbers they knew they were gunna win without tanks.

They only used them at the end because there was no risk of Gungans attacking, they were retreating, except Jar Jar

 

Classic commentary on the nature of warfare: The troops are more expendable than the hardware.

 

But the troops are also hardware.

 

the Tanks are probably meant to
deliver long-range fire. i would think its
pretty difficult to shoot a Gungan or group of Gungans who stand pretty close to the ground, when the Tank's cannons are pretty high off the ground.

its also possible they were sent there just
to scare the Gungans, maybe to get them to back-down.

 

Yes, the troops are also hardware in the strictest sense. But in terms of how much each individual 'soldier' is 'worth' they are considered more expendable than the transport that brought them to the battlefield. Just as it is in war as WE know it.

 

It's actually because the shields were only meant to let in small objects, like other gungans, battle droids are similar in size, but the tanks are way bigger.

In a real war, the tank goes in first and all the soldiers follow.

that doesnt make any sense.

theres no reason why an object's size has anything to do with whether or not it can pass through that shield.

a better question is:
why didnt the gungans launch boombas out at the droid transports? if they would have attacked those, they would have taken out entire battalions of droids at a time. Can boombas not pass through the shields??

DexVader_22 perhaps the Gungans big luminous balls didn't have the range to reach the tanks. Or the shield would have some kind of affect on their balls.

i saw catapults that could launch
those "glowing balls" pretty far...

Well its the explanation given in the TPM novel IIRC.

Very stupid isn't it...?

 

The shields were designed to block small, very hot objects (like laser blasts) and very large objects, such as tanks. The shields were created long before they were going to have to be used against the Trade Federation, and therefore the droids going through was not thought of...also remember how Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Jar Jar got through the Bubble in Otoh Gunga.

The shields were not made to fit to form large objects, and I'm guessing could only break open a small distance to allow people through. They may not have been able to expand enough to allow something the size of a tank through.

 

Then they were pretty useless afterall.

 

Well, the Gungans didn't know what to expect from the Trade Federation. And its not like they built the shields for that reason, they were shields for other purposes that had to be used for war.

 

if it werent for those shields the gunagans would have been routed in 5 minutes...to say the shields were useless is just an incorrect statement
