It is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. If you call it Tuna Fish, then why don't you also say Salmon Fish, Trout Fish, Shark Fish, etc...

I can't imagine someone asking for a Salmon Fish sandwhich.

    Stooopid! :)

Why do the British call a truck a lorry, an elevator a lift, and an apartment a flat? Why do the Canadians call a couch a chesterfield? It's just regional differences. I'm sure if I knew anything about the Australian dialect, I'd have a hard time understanding why you call certain things what you do.

My 'Huh' was in reference to the Ahi comment.

I understand what you are saying, however, it still doesn't make sense. Why put Fish at the end of Tuna, and not at the end of all the other types of Fish. That is what makes it weird.

This one time a guy ordered a Tuna sandwich in Hartford, CT. The guy at the deli, being a couple short of a picnic put a piano tuner (a small screwdriver like tool) in amongst the lettuce and tomato. When the customer bit into the roll, he broke his teeth and the deli was sued.

The guy with the broken teeth always made sure to ensure that his intentions and wishes were clearly given so as not to go through that sort of thing again, and proceeded to call Tuna "Tuna Fish" so as not to be confused with a piano tuner in future. The habit stuck, spread, and has since become part of the american vernacular.

    Or not.

    [face_laugh] I like, jp-30's response!

But really, sometimes I just call it tuna. We'd still know what you were saying if you just said tuna. I never really thought about it before. What I'd like to know is what the heck a treacle tart is. I've never seen treacle before.

You'd still know? I doubt that.

I ordered a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich (SAMMICH!) from place in Seattle once when I was there and they had no idea what a tomato was when I pronounced it tom-ah-toe.

    Dumb.

It's the same reason that some people call a pen an "ink pen" or they want to "aks" you "sumptin" or that they call those big rockets in Kansas "NEWC-YA-LER Weapons" (Sound familiar "W"?). It's a lack of education.

A lot of people call them "noocyuhler" weapons. More than just W.

Oh, so they teach you how to say "tuna" in US schools? That's great. Now if they can move onto the fact that Hitler was not Japanese I think we'll all be able to rest a little easier at night.

But "DUH-BB-YAH" is the most famous (right now) one people publically ossociate with bad education.

Seattle is the home of Starbucks and shall be WORSHIPED! Course, that is kinda bad. Where did you go?

Anyways, it's just the way we call it. I eat a tuna fish sandwich. But if it's just the fish, it's tuna.

It has nothing to do with education. It's more of a regional thing, like someone said before.

Why does it matter anyways? Hmmm....

If Tuna is chicken of the sea...I think that makes shrimp the roach of the sea.

I'm more concerned about the superfluous "u" than referring to tuna as tuna fish. What's that about?

    Amazing.

No. no, that honour goes to the Minke Whale.

Japanese fisheries official Masayuki Komatsu caused controversy last week by describing the minke as the "cockroach of the sea", claiming the species had such large populations hunting restrictions should be lifted.
