Why do jedi have such weird names when ordinary people don't?

Jedi names: Shaak Ti, Qui-gon-Jen, Obi-wan-Kenobi, Ki-a-mun-di, and a bunch of others whose names are to weird for me to remember.

Of coarse, an exception is Anakin.

Then you have non jedi names: Owen Lars, Shimi Skywalker, Palpatine, Cout Dooku. Padme, Naberrie, Leai Organa, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Tarkin.

And jedi are given their names before they become jedi of coarse.

I dunno about you, but almost all the names in the Star Wars universe are abstract. Nobody wants boring, typical names in such a universe now do they.

When I saw TPM for the first time and heard the name Qui-Gon Ginn, I thought all Jedi had similar hyphenated first names, except for Yoda. No other Jedi were mentioned by name in TPM, so it wasn't until I found my beloved DK companion books that I was able to learn names like Mace Windu, and Ki-Adi Mundi (another hyphenated name). We could go on forever about the names in SW. I've always wondered how much symbolism there was in characters' names. Han Solo seems to symbolize the character's "always looking out for #1" attitude; however, I cannot think of one single other symbolic name except maybe Finnius Valorum. We have no real reason to think he ever did anything valorous though. To answer the question though; the only thing I can think of is so we can immediately tell whether someone is a Jedi or not from their name.

Kyle Katarn... Quin Vos... Corran Horn... Kam Solusar... Kyp Durron... Bardan Jusik...

Or, if you want movie only: Mace Windu, Bultar Swan, Barriss Offee, Stass Allie, Adi Gallia...

The list goes on. The Jedi with 'weird' names are mostly alien, so of course they'd have unusual names.

Everyone has a weird name in Star Wars, with the possible exception of Luke Skywalker. To my ears at least.

The jedi have names with lots a hyphens and weird sounds. I don't know about you but Sis tin sounds wierder to me than jabba the hutt. But what I'm trying to say is that the type of weird names that jedi have are different from the type of weird names non-jedi have.

Being that most Jedi are taken as infants, it would seem that many are named by the Jedi. I recall that Mace Windu was named after the clan he came from (the Windu)on his home planet. Don't remember where Mace came from though. So there may be some unwritten system where thier names have some connection to thier original culture. Or just like earthly cultures many names came from the family's trade or your lineage, like Cooper or Samson.

I remember seeing the original series as a kid and being really negative towards the name Ben Kenobi. You take into account names like Obi-Wan, Mace, Qui-Gon, Yoda, and then you're left with Ben--an evidently uncreative worldly name. Then again, 'Luke' isn't exactly at the pinnacle of ingenuity either.

Yeah... I never understood how you get "Ben" from "Obi-Wan." Yes, I do see the B and the N sounds, but it still seems like a stretch.

"Jedi names: Shaak Ti, Qui-gon-Jen, Obi-wan-Kenobi, Ki-a-mun-di, and a bunch of others whose names are to weird for me to remember."

Do you mean, only the hyphenated names (-) are wierd?

    Note: It's Qui-gon Jinn, Obi-wan Kenobi, and Ki-Adi-Mundi.

I pretty much think everyone not just the Jedi have crazy and weird names...I mean come on Han Solo? You think thats a normal name? Anakin, Padme, Jar Jar Binks? Come on dude don't be like that.

And what would Star Wars be if Lukes name was John Swarts. Or if Obi-Wan was Bob Hugh. Does work quite right huh? They are all pretty crazy names, your assumptions are even crazier.

    Wedge isn't a weird name?

A guideline for inventing SW names: pick a word that can be both a noun and a verb.

Who is to say which names are weird and which ones aren't? Why do you get to force your beliefs on the rest of us?

How is "Anakin" not a wierd name? A guy who goes by "Ani", I think this is strange. What I find wierder is that some people in this universe have such normal names: Luke, Leia, Ben. I mean these names are just regular, might as well be Bill, John, Laura. So why do some people have normal names might be a more economical question.
