Why do parents still name their kids "BJ"?

Might as well stamp "MAKE FUN OF ME IN JUNIOR HIGH" on the kid's forehead.

Or, at least, I would have made fun of a kid who called himself that. Does this occur to no one else?!

Isn't B.J. more of a nickname which the person usually takes on themselves, though?

I had a girl named Anita Dick, and a guy named Justin Glasscock in jr, high.

    Now those are traumatic names.

I imagine the nickname is often coined by the parents. Then again, I haven't known many people who go by the initials of (what is usually) their first two names.

Well, BJ and The Bear was pretty awesome, so that's probably the reason.

Knew someone with the latter last name once. You could always see him coming.

I have a cousin who we all used to call B.J. since his name is Bill Jr., but nowadays he goes by Bill.

To be fair, I think a lot of parents still have absolutely no idea what it stands for. In some cases I think even if you told them what it stood for they would still say "So what's that then?"

Chances are a lot of popular names nowadays will eventually turn into slang obscenities. Not much you can do to predict it.

There's little hope when people would choose to call their company a2m.

I have a friend of over 25 years who goes by the name BJ as those are the initials of his first and last name. He didn't get much flack about it in junior high and high school, maybe one or two kids said something about it to him, but he just shrugged it off with a "Yeah, so?" and left it at that. Even now as an adult, most everyone calls him BJ and nobody snickers about it at all. About the only place he goes by his first name is his driver's license and other official docs, the other 99% of stuff has the name BJ on it.

Oddly enough, I knew him for so long that I didn't think twice of the connotation of the name until I was at college (he and I went to different schools) and someone used it in a different context than someone's name. They got a laugh about his name until I mentioned who he was and who his family was (owners of a prominent jewelry store in Des Moines) and then they quieted down.

If a kid's named or nicknamed "BJ", they can always get their name changed so it becomes "TJ" or something else.

Who wouldn't want to be named BJ? You could star in your own tv show with a monkey!
