(I do not know if this is the right forum for this thread, but, anyway, you mods may fix it).

I was watching A New Hope, and than Tuskan Riders apperead. So, I have this lil question: why dont they show their faces? The sand people only use a creepy mask, and google things in their eyes [face_hypnotized] . Are they robots or what?

Can you guys explain me that? Thanks

Probably to protect them from Tatooine's harsh environment. And no, they are obviously not robots.

According to my lexicons it is for religious reason. You might want to read this.

It's part of their culture. To show bare skin is taboo in Sandpeople culture, and so they cover themselves head to toe in order to avoid this.

Although, I don't believe this is canon anymore, so who knows now. [face_dunno]

Luke was not a nomad who went to (or traveled through) the harshest regions of the planet.

And it's doubtful that anybody is going to be hospitable enough to bring a group of people known for their savagery against settlers into their hovel.

Exactly. And I always assumed (or concluded based on evidence) that Jawas wore those hooded cloaks for the same reason.

Well, Jawas are little thieves, so its pretty obvious why you wouldn't want one in your home. :p

Heh. I meant because of the sandstorms, but yeah, also the Jawas were probably pretty ugly. :D

Or big rats, as the case may be. (Have you ever seen a 4' tall rat?) [face_hypnotized]

the canon parts of sw don't ever show many of these races without their masks so it's left up to the imagination. the old legends e.u. liked to show everything so that's what you can check but according to canon we don't know what they really look like.

I always thought they were a different species than human.

They could be a tribal warring culture, with the masks serving a similar purpose as to what actual tribal warriors wear.

EDIT: If you search "tribal warrior mask" on google you will find quite a few examples of tribal masks that don't look all that dissimilar from the Tusken Raider mask.

As many have said, it's religious/cultural reasons, as well as practical in which being people of the sand, the environment could really take a toll on them.

I also remember reading that they weren't exactly great looking, but I doubt that had anything to do with their headwear choices.

Protects from skin damage caused by twin suns. Probably why the humans seem to age faster. If Obi Wan was exiled on another planet for same period of time between the trilogies I doubt he would looked as aged as he did.

The novel Star Wars: Kenobi explains why pretty well and goes into a lot of depth of the whole tusken culture. Its not cannon but its all still pretty interesting. But ya basically its what others have said that its mostly a ritual and taboo to show skin.

I'd highly recommend that novel btw. Beyond the sand people insight its simply a great story. Not cannon but oh well. Its a great "legend" atleast...

Me too. I assumed that they was a grotesque alien race hiding under those masks. Maybe they are the indigenous people of Tatooine, present there long before human and alien settlers?

Its both part of their religion/culture and it is also to help protect them from the sandstorms and horrible arid conditions of tattoine. Think of them ad wearing star wars Burkas.
