Why do the Chipmunks wear muumuus?

I don't see why they can't just wear pants or something.

 

You try getting a chipmunk into a pair of pants and tell me how easy it is.

I have never understood the clothing habits of cartoon characters. Some wear pants, others do not, even when they are of the same species. And what's with Mickey Mouse wearing gloves?

What I don't understand is how animal cartoon characters can own a pet that is the same species as one of their friends. For instance, does Goofy see Mickey as a slave owner of some sort?

 

Why chipmunks wear muumuus?? Where else would they hide their nuts?
