Does anyone think it is weird that Mace Windu has a purple lightsaber when all the other Jedi have blue and green? In an interview of George Lucas he said that Samuel Jackson had two requests. One was to have a heroic death and the other was to have a purple lightsaber. I think George should have said yes to the heroic death, but vetoed the purple lightsaber.

I've also heard multiple times that Windu uses some of the dark side when in combat. I'm guessing the purple lightsaber somehow has inspired this into the lore. As someone who is high ranking in the Jedi order you'd think the other Jedi would be disapproving of this. It is against the Jedi way to use the dark side so why is Mace getting a free pass?

In Legends, the crystal was a gift from a mission that he undertook. In current canon, some crystals will become purple and yellow. All crystals have no color initially and will react to the user once chosen and the saber is made.

One of many ludicrous EU concepts. Just ignore it.

As for Mace Windu having a purple lightsaber, I don't mind it as long as it's just a peculiarity of his character.

The canon answer is in Claudia Gray’s Master & Apprentice Book:

“The story sees Obi-Wan meet a royal character by the name of Princess Fanry who immediately takes an interest in the Jedi's saber. Obi-Wan happily shows Fanry the inner workings of his weapon and explains the power of the Kyber crystals in detail.
Obi-Wan states that during a lightsaber's construction, Kyber crystals bond with the Jedi putting them to use and take on properties from their owner. The Jedi explains to the captivated princess that while most blades turn blue or green due to this phenomenon, "a few crystals even turn purple." Clearly, this is a reference to Mace Windu's purple lightsaber in the Star Wars prequels but the line heavily implies that Windu's weapon is not entirely unique and even though his is the only purple lightsaber to feature on the big screen, it seems that there areother ones out there in the Star Wars universe.” (https://screenrant.com/star-wars-mace-windu-purple-lightsaber-origin-canon/)

    OOC: Jackson requested it

IC: any of the above, pick your flavour

Personal head canon: green, blue and red are common coloured crystals. Purple is one of the more uncommon crystals, like Ahsoka's white, etc.

That’s what Claudia Gray wrote, that its just a rarer phenomenon. I personally like that.

'Cause Samuel L. Jackson is a sigma male, so Lucas couldn't deny him that.

Because Jackson threatened to quit Star Wars otherwise.

Were there ever any orange light sabers?
