After the failed assassination attempt, Palpatine offers that a Jedi, specifically OB1, protect Padme. Why? If he wants her dead, why have a Jedi (known to be powerful who has killed a Sith) protect her? Does he want to get close to Ob1 (not Anakin)? Will this be answered in III, when Sidious is revealed?

Theory #1: He wanted her death blamed on the failed protection of the Jedi.

Theory #2: He was overconfidant enough to think he could still get away with an assasination attempt.

Theory #3: He wanted to seem like he actually cared for her well-being.

Theory#4: He wanted to spook her off the planet so he could push the Military Creation Act through.

I'm leaning towards #4 now, but mix and match as you like.

My opinion is that Palp wanted to keep a close eye on Anakin. Protection of Padme was a good excuse because Palp knew that Anakin was still Kenobi's Padawan: wherever Obi-Wan went Anakin would probably be near. This way, it would be easier for him to manipulate Anakin's future.

Exactly Ranic. Palps picked Obi-Wan to get Anakin in contact w/ Padme again. As we see in Aotc, Palps was a confidant of Anakin. Anakin probably shared his feelings for Padme w/ him. Palps used the situation to manipulate Anakin's emotions to drive him to the dark side.

I don't thnk palpy really wanted to kill padme, after all they are like family. The only reason there was assasination attempt was to scare her. Lets face it, if anyone knows about her double other then her staff it would be palpatine. And he also knew the jedi would sense the danger of the kouhuns before they killed her. And the whole obiwan thing (what this topic is about) I completly agree with the last two people.

Maybe Palpatine is not Sidious after all ;)

I always thought that he chose Kenobi because there was a chance that with a successful assasination Obi-Wan would be in trouble with the Council for failing in his duty. This could be some revenge for having killed Darth Maul.

I think it was to get Anakin near Padme so he could turn him to the Dark Side.

Palpatine, I think, sees two advantages to having Padme as a friend:

    1. Her death can be used to manipulate the Senate.
    2. If she survived an attempt on her life, she will probably side with him.

In Episode II, whether she lives or dies is irrelevant: the attack will be blamed on the separatists, thus convincing the Senate that the military creation act is needed. And if the resistance to said act is out of the picture, one way or another, so much the better. And as for Obi-Wan, it probably did have to do with Anakin.

    That's a good theory, Jedi David. :D

But I'm leaning more towards the getting close to Anakin theory. But it could be both! ;)

because somehow he knows that anakin is in love with pademe' and wants to help them along.....that's like asking who anakin's father is....no one knows

You forget just how crafty and perceptive Palpy is (he'd have to be to pull off all the little manipulations he does)...he could have picked up that there is some kind of emotional attachment Anakin has for Padme.

I think that he asked for Master Kenobi to protect her:
    1. So Obi-wan would eventually find out about the clones now that his war is ready he'd need the Jedi/Republic to find out about his wittle present without having the tag say to the Jedi from Darth Sidious/Palpatine.
    2. Seperate Anakin from Obi-wan
    3. But primarily to get Anakin close to Padme again.

If Palpatine really wanted Padme dead at the opening of the film, Zam Wesell would have been informed that the Senator uses decoys.

Also when he assigns Jedi to protect her, it's a sure thing he doesn't want her dead.

So it comes down to why he wants her around. As some of you have said, it's about Anakin.

One of Palpatines games in AOTC was to expose Anakin to outside elements. Separating Obi-Wan from Anakin is another subplot. Exposing Anakin to so many outside emotions will make him unstable. Just what Palpatine wants. Plus it looks good in Anakins eyes that it was Palpatine who suggested that Obi and Ani be Padmes guards. Thus receiving the compliment "Your guidance more than my patience."

Palpatine has plans within plans within plans.

But remember, Sidious' plans changed with TPM.

I guess in pushing the two of them together, then his plans can come along more rapidly. Anakin and pademe' did end up together....it would be cool to find out who anakin's pa really is....if palpy ended up being the dad.....
