EDIT: I sure hope that George Lucas intended this (because that's what makes things true).

it has a grander purpose in the saga. the fetts served the republic/empire as the whistle serves the samba-people, by calling attention to cracks in their intelligence.

i haven't thought this through very much, but maybe we can expand upon it together.

    thank you please.

Because the Fetts spend a lot of time on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro
    chasing Brazilian women wearing thongs.

    Samba-Samba!

There have been further developments: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/tgifs/Tapir_bw.GIF

Note the snout and origin of the tapir.

It has also come to my attention that another poster made a similar discovery last month: http://boards.theforce.net/prequel_trilogy/b10669/30342383/p1/?15

Everything is finally starting to make sense![face_dancing]

Time to rain on the kids' parade & stop all fun of any kind - Slave 1's design was inspired by a distinctive type of streetlight near ILM.

Some people mistakenly believe the Slave I's design was inspired by a lamp post outside the ILM building. But Nilo Rodis-Jamero, an art director on The Empire Strikes Back, said that his design for the Slave I was actually based on a radar dish. It was later on when the ship was being constructed at ILM that someone pointed out that it resembled a street lamp, and from then on people just assumed that that had been the original source of the design. Lorne Peterson was one of only two model makers to work on the Slave I.

Nilo Rodis-Jamero should say that to Jango and Obi's asteroid field dance choreographer, George Lucas. The seismic charges were obviously cues for Obi to take the lead.

Here's Rodis-Janero's own words on the subject:

"I remember seeing a radar dish and stopping to sketch it very quickly to see if I could get something out of it. When we were building the ships at ILM, somebody looked at street lamps and pointed out that they looked like Boba's ship. SO everyone began to think that was where I got the idea for the design."

That said, as an illustrator myself I must point out that commonly-viewed objects and shapes can influence one's artwork on a subconscious level. If these infamous streetlamps were near ILM where Rodis-Janero was working, it's likely that without his realizing it, they influenced his designs of the ship along with the radar dish.

Samba whistle? Not so much. ;)
