Why did the Dia Noga let go of Luke?

is it on a whim or because it realized a mashing session was to begin?

How does the Dia Noga secape the mashing sessions?

I always thought it knew about the masher and escaped somehow. I think the better question was how it got in there anyway.

I would assume there is some sort of signal that alerts the Dianoga that the mashing cycle is about to begin. It is just an animal after all, training it to retreat to it's lair when a sound goes off probably wouldn't be that hard.

Maybe it knew a way out or a hiding place protected from being smashed. I'm sure it let go of Luke because it recognized some sign that the walls were about to close in. If it lived in this environment, it's probably been through the process B4. There might be a deep end in the compactor. Notice how shallow the water is around their legs. How else could it hold Luke's entire body underwater or was Han and the others standing on junk beneath the water?

The loud grinding "thunk" noise that sounds before the compactor starts is the warning the beast hears.

And there must be a vent of some kind since you can't compact water.

We see an eye pop up thru the water and a tentacle (?) swim by then it grabs Luke. But I've always wondered what that garbage monster looks like in its entirety. Are there any drawings of it anywhere? The trash compacter isn't all that big.
And where does it come from? I mean which planet is it indigenious to?

I think the original death star toy came with it, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: ah, yes, here's a link: Death Star Playset

I've always kind of wondered about what the trash compactor was like under the water (or is that urine?) and how the heroes could stand up but still have room for the Dia Noga to lurk below.

As for Dia Noga information, I've read they are spread throughout the galaxy and are frequently found in trash dumps and the like, and grow from microscopic organisms that get easily transferred from place to place, which is why they can be found all over the place. The turn the color of whatever they've been eating, and they can extend their eyestalk to look down tunnels and around corners.

Thanks Alomanuma_Topha for bringing back childhood memories of the Death Star playset. I lost count long ago of how many times I imagined torturing rebels on its grey levels of fun!

You can get a slightly more detailed look of the Dianoga's undercarriage ;) in the first Dark Forces game. Kyle Katarn has to navigate a sewer tunnel filled with dianogas and they emerge up to their mouth-level to attack him.

You know... come to think of it, I never had the Kenner Death Star playset. My cousins did. :( My sister had the Darth Vader bust (head and shoulders) that breathed and the eyes would glow. That was cool but she would never let anyone else touch it. It had a switch in the back and she was so picky about it she wouldn't even let us turn it on. She had to 'cause it was HERS. Oh well, that blast from the past is reminding me of other toys that was out at the time.

The N64 Shadows of the Empire game also had you fighting dianogas. They were in the sewer of Coruscant.

I honestly thought that I read somewhere that DiaNoga-type creatures are placed in garbage compactors to eat as much of the refuse as possible, until they outgrow their surroundings. Then the are disposed of and replaced.

    I could be wrong...

"Why does the Dia Noga let go?"

I read that animal don't like toeat human because we taste terrible. Maybe the dianoga didn't like the smell of Luke and let him go.

    Just my opinion of course!
