Did some looters clean-out the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after Order 66 and sell their garments to Outer Rim shop-keepers?
It was originally just how people on Tatooine dressed, until Lucas decided to make it the official Jedi uniform.
Obi-Wan's outift isn't exactly the same as Owen's though. Owen is basically just wearing a shirt, but Obi-Wan is wearing a full-blown tunic. Obi-Wan's cloak also seems to be more billowy and to have wider sleeves. And all his clothing material looks thicker and of a higher quality than Owen's. Even if it wasn't originally intended to be the "official Jedi uniform," Obi-Wan's outfit is distinctly more wizard-like, as befits his role in the movie. And it's not as if the explanation for their more superficial similarities doesn't make sense, so I don't get what the issue is.
Owen dresses like a bum in ANH; that being said, Luke's outfit is just a variation on Owen's. I'm guessing the cloaks have something to do with protection against sandstorms. Plus, though I've never lived in the desert (or spent much time there), I've heard it can get quite cold at night. I don't think it has anything to do with the Jedi oufits in the PT - both Owen's & the Jedi's outfits are intentionally functional & simplistic...
Owen could be a Jedi, but he is a DARK Jedi (working for the Sith): - His costumes are a decoy, so we all believe he is a Jedi - He is the chosen one's brother (forget about DNA: the Force works in strange ways) - Those burning corpses Luke had found could be jawas Owen had slaughtered (because they are animals!!) - He had Darth Maul's picture painted on his kitchen roof - He wanted a RED astrodroid (red.... Sith....) - He didn't want Luke to join the academy to fight against the Empire - He helped the tusken to take Shmi... - He helped the tusken to cut Cliegg's legs the same way Obi-Wan did to his Sith friend - He said Obi-Wan was dead (Cody must have told him) - He didn't know Ben was Obi-Wan (which explains why Obi-Wan was never found on Tatooine) - The Emperor knew about Luke.... HOW?? Because Darth Lars was his informant - He kept using the Force mind control on Luke and Beru about those "just another year" bs.... The Force has awaken, and Lars is coming back.... He WILL try to make Luke go BACK to the farm....
I think that's just the way people dressed on Tatooine, which is similar to what people might wear in the desert on Earth. GL likely wanted the Jedi in the PT to resemble what Obi-Wan wore in ANH so he gave most of them similar outfits. Robes are commonly seen in religious practices, too. They're meant to appear traditional and humble, as the Jedi may want to portray themselves. Wioslea (the alien who bought Luke's landspeeder) wore an outfit almost identical to Obi-Wan's.
Well the first version of what was an "official Jedi uniform" was hardly unrelated to what Obi-Wan was wearing in the first place:
I actually like the irony in the fact that, to blend in on Tatooine, all Obi-Wan had to do was to keep on wearing what he'd always been wearing.
I actually always got so confused when I was a kid and saw Sebastian Shaw at the end of ROTJ, I always thought it was uncle Ben cause of how he dresses. The clothes seem alittle heavy for a moisture farmer on a desert planet...
Why do you think the stormtroopers incinerated Uncle Owen? They knew that he was so powerful that they had to resort to using their prototype flamethrower ordinance. Before the fire fully claimed Owen's life, he used the force to shatter all remnants of the flamethrower prototypes; that is why they are never seen in the OT
I would have loved for the Jedi to wear something inspired by the Knights Templar (Especially during the Clone Wars):
It seems to me that traditional Jedi garb is meant to look like a samurai outfit. In the PT, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Mace all have outfits that are pretty similar. A brown hooded robe, multiple-layers of fabric forming a "V" below the neck, and a sash around the waist: Old Obi-Wan's outfit is basically a slightly less fancy version of these traditional Jedi outfits. However, unlike the other Jedi but like samurai, his robes are floor length. (His shirt seems to have fewer layers, but hey, it's hot on Tatooine.) Anakin and Luke both deviate from traditional Jedi garb. I assume Anakin dresses differently because he's arrogant so he does his own thing and also because GL wanted his outfit to be reminiscent of Luke's ROTJ outfit. GL wanted Luke in this all black outfit to imply that he might be susceptible to turning to the dark side. Owen's outfit is different from those worn by the Jedi and samurai. He doesn't wear a brown hooded robe. His robe is a different type of fabric with no hood, and really, his robe looks more like a ratty bathrobe. Instead of a sash, he wears something more like a cowboy's belt. Also, unlike Ben's robes, his robes aren't floor length. What actually is the most similar is his shirt, which forms the same V-shaped pattern.
It's not a mistake. Jedi wore simple clothes, which in SW is what Owen wears. I've always taken it as a sign of humility and solidarity with common folk. Those they are sworn to protect and serve. Consider, Benedictines and Franciscans look odd out and about in their habits, but it wasn't much different than peasant garb of the first century. Fashion just changed around them, as fashions do.
